On the eve of her twenty-fifth birthday, Catherine, a troubled young woman, has spent years caring for her brilliant but unstable father, a famous mathematician. She must deal with her own volatile emotions, the arrival of her estranged sister Claire, and the attentions of Hal, a former student of her father's who hopes to find valuable work in the 103 notebooks of her father's ramblings. Over the long weekend that follows, a burgeoning romance and the discovery of a mysterious notebook draw Catherine into the most difficult problem of all: How much of her father's madness - or genius - will she inherit? Hope on Ice: the Felicitous Fiction of Jon Hassler CHARLOTTE HAYS Whenever I read the novels of Jon Hassler, whose funny and beautifully crafted stories, mostly about Catholics in the upper Midwest, call to mind his fellow Minnesotan and Catholic writer, the late J.F. Powers, I wonder what it's like to be one of the best American novelists alive, yet largely unknown beyond a coterie of fanatical admirers such as myself. John Hassler
Though immensely entertaining, novelist Jon Hassler is largely unknown, chiefly because of his choice of subject matter. Hassler writes about Catholic priests and the very human situations in which they find themselves.
Whenever I read the novels of Jon Hassler, whose funny and beautifully crafted stories, mostly about Catholics in the upper Midwest, call to mind his fellow Minnesotan and Catholic writer, the late J.F. Powers, I wonder what it's like to be one of the best American novelists alive, yet largely unknown beyond a coterie of fanatical admirers such as myself. Anthony Trollope, Barbara Pym, and Powers also wrote droll stories about men of the cloth. That was to be expected in Trollope's time, when the clerical life with its attendant benefices was a respectable career track for young Victorians and thus a ready topic for satire. But the motif was already quaint by the 1950s, when Pym was writing her delicious tales of dotty High Anglican vicars and the spinsters smitten by them. And Powers's darkly humorous fiction, whose subjects are almost always Catholic priests, is respected but generally misunderstood by the literary establishment. So it is not surprising that Hassler, writing about a generation after Powers, has simply been ignored by most of the critics.

Childhood Memories
Memorable Catholic Characters ... Knowing How to Tell a Story ON A COLD MAINE NIGHT, a 35-year-old news producer sits alone in his quiet apartment reading a book his sister has recommended. Suddenly, stunned by the book's unanticipated climax, he shouts, "No! No!" Moments later he returns to the story, overwhelmed by a sense of loss. A civilian writer for the Department of Defense scours bookstore shelves, searching out the perfect gift for a friend's upcoming birthday. The title she seeks is set firmly in her mind. Unable to find it, she exits the Maryland store in frustration. No other book will do! A parish priest assigned to a lonely South Dakota outpost eagerly anticipates an upcoming day off. It finally arrives. He drives 85 miles one way to the closest public library and picks up another novel by his new favorite author. In the anonymity of the small city, he kicks up his heels and spends the afternoon in a coffee shop reading.

Finding balance between the ridiculous and sublime: A talk with Jon Hassler
Interview by Alden Mudge How is it that the author of the very funny new novel, "The Dean's List," is not yet a famous American writer? True, Jon Hassler enjoys a devoted word-of-mouth following. The soulful "Staggerford" (published, at last, in 1977, when he was 42 years old) is, Hassler admits, "a cult book among English teachers, at least around Minnesota." His seven subsequent novels are recommended by knowledgeable librarians and thoughtful booksellers all over the country. His most recent book, "Rookery Blues" received high praise. And Hassler counts First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton as one of his more famous fans. But Hassler's name sparks no flicker of recognition in the eyes of most of my well-read friends, and I wonder how that can be.

    Hassler, Jon The Love Hunter
Genre Novel (311 pp.) Keywords Caregivers Death and Dying Depression Disability ... Suffering Summary Larry is dying of multiple sclerosis. He walks only with assistance, suffers severe depression, is beginning to be incontinent, and has attempted suicide. His best friend, Chris, decides to take him duck hunting, a sport that has been central to their close relationship. This, however, will be their last trip: Chris has decided to drown Larry in the marsh, as a last act of his love. As this novel retraces the growth of their friendship, it also traces the growth of Chris's love for Larry's wife, Rachel. Rachel has been an almost saintly caregiver for her husband, weathering his increasing disability and despair, while struggling to maintain her own identity and peace of mind. Commentary I won't tell you how the story ends. Hassler is a Minnesota writer whose novels have achieved a good amount of acclaim. What could easily become a melodramatic, over-wrought love story becomes, in his hands, a rich study of friendship, mourning, and the impotence that frustrates so many people who must watch loved ones lose their vitality and companionableness. The portrait of Rachel, in all her perfection and good sense, seems almost too good to be true, but also offers a glimpse at the kinds of decisions faced by many young wives of charismatic husbands.

    J. F. Powers, R.I.P.
    by Jon Hassler
Many of us, entering the St. John's Abbey church for the funeral Mass of J. F. Powers, who died on June 12, were surprised to find him absent. He had been buried earlier at a graveside service in the St. John's cemetery. By why were we surprised? Jim Powers, whose peerless first novel, Morte d'Urban , won the National Book Award in 1963, was the most elusive man we knew. Since the death eleven years ago of his wife, Betty, he seemed like a man adrift, a solitary soul who cared nothing for convention and seemed to care even less for public opinion.
Had he cared for public opinion, would he have dawdled over his writing as he did? Would he have let 25 years go by between novels? And wouldn't he have put on a friendlier face? Striding across campus to the post office each day, he was a tall, imperious figure, with his eyes invariably on the ground, an expression of defiance drawn tightly on his face. Once you broke through the stern facade, however, you found behind it a warm and spirited conversationalist. Some said the facade was there to protect his privacy, for he was composing fiction in his head. I think it was simpler than that. I think he was shy.
    J. F. Powers was perhaps the best know "Catholic" writer at midcentury, having made his reputation with two story collections
