Hass has published several books of poetry, including Field Guide, Praise, Human Wishes and Sun Under Wood, as well as a book of essays on poetry, Twentieth Century Pleasures, and he was guest editor of the 2001 edition of Best American Poetry. Librarian of Congress Appoints Robert Hass Poet Laureate
Librarian of Congress James H. Billington has announced the appointment of Robert Hass to be the Library's eighth Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry. He will take up his duties in the fall, opening the Library's annual literary series on Thursday, October 12, with a reading of his work. Mr. Hass succeeds Robert Penn Warren, Richard Wilbur, Howard Nemerov, Mark Strand, Joseph Brodsky, Mona Van Duyn, and Rita Dove (whose term ends this month). Of his appointment, Dr. Billington said, "I am pleased to announce the selection of a first-rate poet from the American West, and a gifted poetic translator, as poet laureate for 1995-96. His poetry explores our connectedness with the natural world and its reverberations in the emotions of our usual lives. Using both art and nature as starting points, he leads us into the depths of everyday existence. He looks to Central Europe in his close collaboration with Czeslaw Milosz and to Japan in his translations of classical haiku. He is a worthy successor to Rita Dove as poet laureate. He will design some programs with the poets and poetry of the West, adding a further dimension to our national outreach. We look forward to welcoming him to the Library in October."

Librarian of Congress Appoints Poet Laureate Robert Hass To Second Term as Poet Laureate
Librarian of Congress James H. Billington has announced the reappointment of Robert Hass to be the Library's Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry. His second term will begin in October, when he will open the Library's annual literary series with a reading from his work. In his first term at the Library, Mr. Hass brought to Washington audiences many poets from Western states to read in the literary series, including Ishmael Reed, David Mura, and Carl Rakosi. He also brought together, in a weeklong series of events titled "Watershed: Writers, Nature, and Community," a large group of notable nature writers, among them Gary Snyder, Terry Tempest Williams, Wendell Berry, and William Kittredge, to participate in dialogues and panel discussions, and to give readings in the week leading up to Earth Day. Mr. Hass also initiated a regular column in The Washington Post Book World, "Poet's Choice," in which he introduces and discusses a poem a week. Among the poets represented in his column so far are voices as diverse as William Carlos Williams, Linda Pastan, Robert Frost, Seamus Heaney, Constantin Cavafy, Ellen Bryant Voigt, and Pablo Neruda. "Poet's Choice" will continue through Mr. Hass's second term.

Intimate Art Robert Hass celebrates the quiet joys of poetry By David Templeton POETRY . . . is . . . an . . . intimate art." Robert Hass speaks softly and slowly this afternoon, choosing each word as carefully as if he were selecting an expensive bottle of wine. Or a diamond. Or a new puppy. He's answering a question about the intense passion poetry fans often reveal when talking about the art form. "Poetry's basic material," Hass says, "is the voice in which we talk to ourselves in our heads. Against all the noise and fury and pressures and deadening routines of external reality, poetry functions as that still, small voice of what it would feel like, were it not buried under the circumstances of our lives, to be our true and authentic selves." Stop. Read that quote again. If you can do so without being thrown out of the coffee-house, try reading it out loud. There now. You have to agree that poetseven when engaged in routine conversation, even when giving yet another interviewdo have a way of making their words sing. Hass especially.
