THE FEAST
The lovers loitered on the deck talking, the men who were with men and the men who were with new women, a little shrill and electric, and the wifely women who had repose and beautifully lined faces and coppery skin. She had taken the turkey from the oven and her friends were talking on the deck in the steady sunshine. She imagined them drifting toward the food, in small groups, finishing sentences, lifting a pickle of a sliver of turkey, nibbling a little with unconscious pleasure. And she imagined setting it out artfully, the white meat, the breads, antipasto, the mushrooms and salad arranged down the oak counter cleanly, and how they all came as in a dance when she called them. She carved meat and then she was crying. Then she was in darkness crying. She didn't know what she wanted. Praise , Ecco Press, 1979

MILLENNIUM EVENING GUEST LECTURER
ROBERT HASS
ROBERT HASS is a professor of English at the University of California, Berkeley and served as Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry at the Library of Congress from 1995 to 1997. During his tenure as Poet Laureate, Professor Hass battled illiteracy by putting into action his belief that, " Imagination makes communities." Of his passion for promoting iteracy, he explains that, "when I got the (Laureate) job I did a lot of reading about literacy...One of the things that struck me was just how powerful a presence poetry has been in our culture when we were, as a people, teaching ourselves to read. At the beginning of the 19th century, less than 60% of American males could write their name, and that was far higher than in most of Europe. If you were black, you could get killed for reading. But we made literacy a civic religion from the idea that you couldn’t have a democracy without it, and we taught a whole people to read. It’s one of the great achievements of the American democratic experiment and one of the indicators of the hunger for literacy, was a taste for poetry." As Poet Laureate, he also sponsored a weeklong celebration of American nature writing called "Watershed." His commitment to environmental issues led him to found the River of Words poetry contest which is run through the International Rivers Network.

Poet's Choice
By Robert Hass Washington Post
Sunday, January 4, 1998; Page X02 MODERN KOREAN poetry, like the poetry of Eastern Europe, is inextricably entangled with the country's history in the 20th century: Japanese military occupation from 1905 to 1945, during which time efforts were made to eradicate the Korean language; a devastating civil war; the division of the country; a series of military dictatorships in the South, the Republic of Korea, accompanied by continued Cold War tensions with the North, a U.S. military presence, a remarkable economic recovery, and an intense grassroots democracy movement that often fought the government in the streets. The conflict between the protesters and the government culminated in a massacre in the southern city of Kwangju in 1980 in which more than 200 people, mostly students, were killed. It was the Tiananmen Square of that decade. After Kwangju, the memory of that event became the focus of the pro-democracy movement, which finally bore fruit in 1992 when the Republic elected a president, Kim Young-Sam, who exposed financial scandals and prosecuted the perpetrators of the massacre. Last week the leader of the movement for decades, Kim Dae Jung, was elected to the presidency. It's a remarkable story, and it's not over. And Americans, who bear some responsibility for the violent turns in modern Korean history, know very little about it. One of the prominent literary figures in the movement to resist government suppression of the Kwangju incident and to bring about democratic reforms was a poet named Ko Un. In the 1970s and '80s he was arrested four times, imprisoned, tortured as a result of which he lost his hearing and ultimately pardoned. He had been a student in the years of Japanese occupation, a Buddhist monk when he began to write and, after his return to secular life, another of the 20th century's alienated urban poets, until he joined the democracy movement and became an active dissident.

I n accepting the post of poet laureate of the United States two years ago, Robert Hass postponed his writing life for what he has called an "act of citizenship." Since his appointment, he has written a weekly column on poetry syndicated by the Washington Post and has traveled around the country to urge more funding for literacy and education, and to suggest the need for deeper awareness of environmental relationships. Hass' tenure as poet laureate has been a more public expression of the lifelong concerns that inform his poetry: a close attention to the natural world, a sense of self developed in relation to the landscape, an acute awareness of both the pleasures and pains of being human. His books of poetry include

Robert Hass has changed what it means to be Poet Laureate of the United States (95/97). He made the Office of Poetry and Literature a position from which to launch action. Armed with the mantra, " Imagination makes communities," Hass spent two years battling American illiteracy. He crisscrossed the country speaking at Rotary Club meetings, raising money to hold conferences. In April, 1996, Hass teamed up with The Orion Society to organize the historic Watershed Conference at the Library of Congress.
For Hass, everything is connected. When he works to heighten literacy, he's also working to promote awareness about the environment. Hass believes that natural beauty must be tended to and that caring for a place means knowing it intimately. Poets, especially, need to pay constant attention to the interaction of mind and environment. And when he's talking about poetry itself, whether Matsuo Basho's or Elizabeth Bishop's, Hass is both spontaneous and original, offering poetic insights that can't be found in any textbook.
Awarded the MacArthur "genius" Fellowship, twice the National Book Critics Circle Award (in 1984 and 1997), and the Yale Series of Younger Poets in 1973, Robert Hass is a professor of English at UC Berkeley. He's published several books of poetry including
