Your browser does not support script advertise. EUROPE'S MOST VISITED SF/F WEB SITE Hart to Hart Publishing guru David Hartwell, currently filling the hotseat as a senior editor at Tor, chats with Stephen Hunt about why only one per cent of the SFF slush pile is of publishable quality, the joys of running The New York Review of Science Fiction, and the contribution made by the Philip K. Dick Awards to the field. As we mentioned above, David owns and publishes the rather good New York Review of Science Fiction, bringing a rare touch of class and respectability to a genre crowded with magazines like, well ... us here at the 'Nest, I suppose. In your opinion, what talents contribute to successful SFF authoring these days? B asic writing skills, wide reading in the genre, a strong desire to write in the genre and not bend its rules, the intent to entertain readers. What type of science fiction and fantasy is selling well at the moment for Tor?

Those Now Gone: NYRSF Editorial 175
I write in early February 2003, and already the sf year is full of event, gossip, anxiety, and bereavement. The most public bereavement is for the astronauts lost in the Columbia space shuttle disaster. As with other events terrible or wonderful in the still-young exploration of space, it yielded images of a new type and scale: in this case the grisly and horrifying depictions on the weather radar maps of the United States, showing a swath of debris (which we all know included human remains) scattered in a band like the path of a storm across four or more southern states. Such events inspire grief on a new scale. . . . I write in early February 2003, and already the sf year is full of event, gossip, anxiety, and bereavement. Do you know what the term "fannish" means? How about "filk" or "fen"? Or "Twonk's Disease"? If not, there's a good chance you're a mundane, which is to say you're not a hardcore SF fan. For you, David G. Hartwellone of the field's finest editors and most stalwart championshas written Age of Wonders , a book about the inner workings of the SF cognoscenti. It is an intriguing look into the rabid subculture spawned by science fiction that also offers insights into why some people give up reading SF in their teens, while for others it becomes a lifelong passion.

David G. Hartwell
Hard Science Fiction
When we read a work of fiction, we test its details against our experience of the nuances and gestures of everyday life. Appearances are at issue when we consider the value of a literary text. We consider the text authentic if it matches what we observe or in fictional circumstances could observe when we look at the world around us. But in the case of science fiction this test does not entirely apply. We must take the seemingly unreal setting and the element of science in the fiction into account.
When we read a work of sf, we also test it against our scientific and technical knowledge. Scientific principles operating behind imaginary rather than everyday experience are at issue. The attitude that underpins science fiction is that there is a reality beyond appearances which is knowable through science.
There is a particular variety of science fiction, commonly called "hard' sf, that emphasizes the rigorous nature of our relation to this reality behind experience. Other sf (even such classics as Walter M. Miller's
A Canticle for Liebowitz ) while it usually takes this into account, emphasizes our experience of the nature of human behavior and is more nearly, but not entirely, testable in the ordinary way we read.

Age of Wonders
by David G. Hartwell
Published in hardcover and trade paperback, October 1996, by Tor Books
Chapter One: The Golden Age of Science Fiction is Twelve
Immersed in science fiction. Bathing in it, drowning in it; for the adolescent who leans this way it can be better than sex. More accessible, more compelling. And the outsider can only wonder, What's the matter with him? What is he into, what's the attraction, why is it so intense? Grown men and women, sixty years old, twenty-five years old, sit around and talk about "the golden age of science fiction," remembering when every story in every magazine was a masterwork of daring, original thought. Some say the golden age was circa 1928; some say 1939; some favor 1953, or 1970 or 1984. The arguments rage till the small of the morning, and nothing is ever resolved. Because the real golden age of science fiction is twelve. This is a book about the science fiction field and that body of contemporary writing known as science fiction, or SF. Over the years there have been a number of books on the writing the field has produced, its artwork and illustration, histories, memoirs, even a book devoted to the amateur publications of the fans. But no general attempt to describe both the literature and the specific subculture out of which the literature flows has ever been presented to the world at large. Donald A. Wollheim, in The Universe Makers
