RESEARCH INTERESTS
Professor Harris' research is in the area of theoretical electronic methods to applications involving specific systems. Current work includes the development of rigorous methods for studying surface and interfacial systems, the use of coupled-cluster techniques for describing electron correlation both in molecules and extended systems, and the implementation of improved approximate methods for studies of large molecules. Other recent work includes theoretical studies of electron-atom scattering and of reactive pathways for transitions useful in laser physics. Frank Harris
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Frank Harris February 14 August 27 ). Author and editor. Frank Harris was born James Thomas Harris in Galway Ireland February 14 . He first came to general notice as the editor of a series of London papers including the Evening News , the Fortnightly Review and the Saturday Review , the latter being the highpoint of his journalistic career, with H. G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw as regular contributors. His later career as a journalist included a spell editing the New York Pearson's Magazine He also wrote short stories and novels, two books on Shakespeare , a series of biographical sketches in five volumes under the title 'Contemporary Portraits' and biographies of his friends Oscar Wilde and George Bernard Shaw . His attempts at playwriting were less successful, with only one, 'Mrs. Daventry' (1900) which was based on an idea by Oscar Wilde , ever being produced on the stage. His best-known work is his autobiography, 'My Life and Loves' (1922-27), which was published in four volumes while he was alive. A dubious fifth volume supposedly taken from his notes was published in 1954, long after his death. 'My Life and Loves' is notorious for its graphic descriptions of Harris's purported sexual encounters and for its exaggeration of the scope of his adventures, his prowess and his role in history.

Frank Harris is known today almost exclusively for his eroticor pornographic My Life and Loves, but aside from that he played a central role in letters around the turn of the century, and was a fine writer whose many other works deserve renewed attention in this new millennium. There are many accounts of his life, and nobody is sure when he was born1854, 1855, or 1856. A very anti-Harris introduction by John Dos Passos gives some details. Also, we are not sure in which category to place Harris: Irish, English, or American literaturehe claimed citizenship in each. http://www.oddbooks.co.uk/harris/

editor and short story writer "Had Shakespeare asked me . . "
by Sir Max Beerbohm (1872-1956) To the late-Victorian literary world, still dominated by ideals of conduct forged at Oxbridge, Frank Harris was a fascinating curiosityan American ball-of-fire who might be ridiculed as an ungentlemanly blowhard, but who nevertheless could not be ignored or dismissed. The self-promoting energy that he embodied was, as many of his English contemporaries recognized with a shudder, the wave of the future and, especially, the spirit of the "New Journalism" that was revolutionizing London's publishing industry. In 1892, George and Weedon Grossmith had devoted a chapter to lampooning him as "Mr. Hardfur Huttle, a very clever writer for the American papers," in their delightful comic novel, The Diary of a Nobody

    Brick's son wrote:
I held a mystery in my hand: two sheets of aged paper, browned by the passage of some seventy years, bits and pieces flaking off in my fingers, scattering on the carpet. As I contemplated these brittle pages, I came to realize that I had to find the answers, to find the man behind the words: This man whom I had known for so many years, but had scarcely known at all. This comforter of small children. This wearer of hats and smoker of pipes. This reader and writer of books. This twentieth century man, this flawed man; my father, Charles Harris Garrigues. And so I went looking for him.

    Introduction
Harris and Bennett moved in similar literary circles but did not actually meet until the relatively late date of 1908, after Harris had written a letter to 'Jacob Tonson' - Bennett's pseudonym for his literary criticism in the New Age . Their friendship would not last long, but for a time they had a deep mutual admiration. Sources for this page are, predominantly, Frank Harris to Arnold Bennett (1936), a privately-printed pamphlet, which reproduces 58 letters from Harris to Bennett, and Letters of Arnold Bennett, Vol II (1968), which includes 6 letters from Bennett to Harris, as well as several letters to others in which Harris is mentioned.
    The Beginning
Arnold Bennett, under his pseudonym of 'Jacob Tonson' had been writing glowing reviews of Harris' work [ ] in the New Age . (The original Tonson was an eighteenth century publisher of - amongst others - Dryden's poetry and the first edition of Paradise Lost ). Harris wrote to 'Tonson' about The Bomb and was pleasantly surprised to receive a reply from Bennett which included the statement that "there is no author in England whom I should more like to meet than the author of Montes " (referring to Harris' great short story
