Any Way the Wind Blows
At the end of Not a Day Goes By the terminally bisexual John Basil Henderson declares: “I’m back, in full form. And I’m out there. Roamin’. And switching lanes.” Now, in Any Way the Wind Blows , Basil, good-looking gadabout and homme fatal, is back at the top of his game (razzle-dazzling both the women and the men). I f bridge builders connect people, then E. Lynn Harris most definitely is a bridge builder. When Keith Boykin interviewed E. Lynn Harris for Lambda Book Report What Becomes of the Brokenhearted , was released in the summer of 2003 those numbers had climbed to over three million copies sold.
In What Becomes... , Harris brought to his readers the story of the man behind the novels. Starting with Harris on the brink of suicide in 1990, the memoir recounts his youth in Arkansas, where outwardly he was a success, but inwardly he struggled with his sexuality. His breakthough came when he realized that he had choice not in his attraction to men but when it came to living a life in which he felt comfortable with himself. His first novel, Invisible Life, captured the pain and joy of being black and gay. Initially self-published, it eventually caught the attention of an editor at Anchor Books, and his career took off.
The Lambda Literary Bridge Builder Award will be presented June 3 at the 16th Annual Lambda Literary Awards gala banquet at the Chicago Mart Plaza hotel in Chicago, IL. Tickets are $125 for the dinner, $175 for the dinner and gala reception, with discounts for tickets purchased before March 31, 2004. To order online, click

GUMBO
A Celebration of African American Writing
Author: E. Lynn Harris The Knowing by Tananarive Due An original story from Gumbo Our teacher said one day that knowledge is power, and I had to raise my hand even though I don’t like to; I like to sit and be quiet and watch people and wait for lunchtime. But I had to ask him if he was sure about that, or if maybe knowledge isn’t just a curse. He asked me what I meant by that, and I said, Hey, that’s what my mama always says. Knowing is her curse, she whispers, touching my forehead at night softly with her long fingers, like spiders’ legs. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and she’s there whispering and rocking me. But I didn’t tell my teacher that part. I could tell from the way my teacher looked at me sideways and went on with his lesson that he thought I was trying to be a smart-ass. People always think you’re something you don’t want to be. Mama says that, too.

Zurich ended the day of his NFL debut alone and in the dark where he felt safe and protected. The only light in Zurich's apartment came from the other buildings and the thin illumination of the moon hovering over the city. He sat on the blond floorboards, which slanted in different directions. The apartment's high ceilings made the room feel airy, but intimate. The air in his living room was warm and still.
After the game and the countless interviews, he turned down invitations to go out and party with his teammates and a dinner invitation from Mia Miller. Instead he came home and called his father and MamaCee. His father had watched the game on television and was quite proud. He talked about their upcoming game with Atlanta and how he had already made hotel reservations and how he was going to bring Rhona and her son. MamaCee was overjoyed to hear from Zurich. It was Sunday and she had missed one of her three church services to watch him on television.

IN 1991, E. Lynn Harris quit a successful job as a computer sales executive to work on his first novel, Invisible Life. Nine years later, he has done the incredible and has become one of the nation's best-selling authors, with six novels that have sold more than 1 million copies. As of this writing, his latest release, Not a Day Goes By, is No. 1 on best-seller lists around the country, including Publisher's Weekly hardcover fiction roster and ranks No. 2 on the New York Times. With his tales of Black glamour, success and his open discussion of the lifestyles of gay and bisexual men, Harris has changed the way we look at relationships and desire. He has broken down taboos about discussing the intricacies of Black sexuality. Gay and bisexual men move from the periphery to the center in his stories. Their voices inform readers what it's like to struggle between the longings of their hearts and who society wants them to be. Parents have told the author they've gained a deeper understanding of their children's lifestyles. Brothers and Sisters have applauded Harris for his candid portrayals of the pain and passion of loving people who struggle to define their sexual identities.

Author E. Lynn Harris, whose steamy novels of black gay and bisexual life have become required reading in plenty of college courses, talks to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution about his latest book, What Becomes of the Brokenhearted: A Memoir. In it, he chronicles his troubled childhood and the many years he struggled to accept being gay. Women rave about his books at signings and "they want to feel my butt," he says. Gay men call his hotel at night. Do straight men like his books, too? "Yeah," he says. "The funny thing about straight men is that they always tell me they're straight. ... Dare to dream Since the publication of E. Lynn Harris's stunning debut novel, Invisible Life, millions of readers have laughed, cried, and anguished along with his unforgettable cast of characters. Now, his growing legions of fans will finally find out what happens in this delicious conclusion to the "Invisible Life" trilogy. In Abide with Me , Harris returns with the utmost finesse to his signature themes of love, friendship, and family, and craftily guides his irresistible characters through new challenges and heartbreaks, and ultimately to redemption through love. At the end of Just As I Am, Raymond Tyler, Jr., was beginning a relationship with Trent, a fraternity brother from his college days, while Nicole had found love with Jared, Raymond's buddy from Atlanta. As Abide with Me opens, Raymond and Trent are settled in Seattle, where Trent's career as an architect has blossomed and Raymond's law practice is booming. All seems well. Then, late one night, Raymond gets a call from a United States Senator that threatens everything he's built. Raymond, facing a crisis of faith, travels to New York hoping for the support of his best friend, Jared, who's moved North after five years in Atlanta. His wife, Nicole, is performing in a revival of Dreamgirls, her lifelong fantasy at last coming true. Nicole is thrilled to return to the stage, but when things start to go wrong, her young and beautiful understudy, Yancey Harrington Braxton, steps into the spotlight a little too smoothly. Writing Life
Harris, who for a young man is nonetheless an old pro at interviews and book launches, seemed perhaps unusually relaxed as he agreed to talk about a time when he first became aware of AIDS. Similarly, as one of them plots character assassination against another, it seems natural enough for them to erroneously imply that someone is HIV positive. By having characters wield such information against one another, Harris artfully points up the negative stigma still associated with HIV and AIDS. The disease also touches the lives of other characters in A Love of My Own, even if its only as they write a check to AIDS service organizations or admonish one another to "play safe." He brings realism to his depiction of HIV disease by showing it across all lines. By showing that it does not discriminate. The author has done his part in different ways, too. The very fact he writes about what he calls "the down low population within the African-American community," referring to bisexuality, was at first somewhat scandalous itself. But it also proved alluring for readers. Whatever drew them in, he is glad he could contribute to awareness and debate.
