Eric David Harris b. 4-9-1981 18 year old son of Wayne Nelson Harris (Air Force Pilot who more recently works in the flight safety business) and Katherine (Kathy) Ann [Pool] Harris (part-time caterer), younger brother to Kevin Harris (21). Born in Wichita, Kansas. While in the Air Force, Wayne Harris held 11 different positions at six different bases from Oklahoma to New York. Harris, M.D., Ph.D Assistant Professor Department of Cell Biology and Physiology Neurosciences Program Molecular Cell Biology Program Prion diseases, including Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, kuru, and Gerstmann-Sträussler syndrome, are fatal neurodegenerative disorders that are characterized by dementia, motor dysfunction, and a sponge-like deterioration of the brain tissue. These disorders, which are closely related to Alzheimer's disease, account for some of the most serious and puzzling cases of subacute dementia in adults, and they are at the center of the current debate over "mad cow disease" in Britain. The diseases are also of enormous scientific interest because infectious, inherited, and sporadic cases are all thought to result from changes in the conformation of a single, highly unusual membrane glycoprotein called PrP (prion protein). A second major interest of the laboratory is Alzheimer's disease, in particular the cell biology of the presenilin and amyloid precursor proteins, mutations in which are linked to familial forms of Alzheimer's disease. These studies are a natural extension of our work on prion diseases, and we expect that they will reveal common molecular principles that underlie both kinds of neurodegenerative disorder. He joined the faculty at UC Santa Barbara in the same year. Current Research My research interests center on the study of transient molecules using various spectroscopic techniques. Transient molecules include those that are chemically unstable, free radicals, high temperature species and molecules in excited electronic states. These molecules are produced by a variety of techniques and are studied using high resolution tunable laser excitation, laser induced photoluminescence, chemiluminescence, laser-laser double reso nance and microwave laser double resonance spectroscopies. Much of our current work is on small metal containing molecules and radicals (e.g. MgOH, CaOH, NiO). Of interest are structures, electrical properties (e.g. dipole moments), vibrational frequencies, dissociation energies, potential curves and location of excited states.
