THE SHADOW OF ARARAT
by Thomas Harlan
Tor
510pp/$26.95/July 1999 Cover by Stephen Hickman Reviewed by Steven H Silver Thomas Harlan's first novel, The Shadow of Ararat serves as the introduction to a four volume series he calls "The Oath of Empire." The Empire, in this case, is a Roman Empire which has managed to endure, in both east and west, until the seventh century. There are other differences between our world and the world which Harlan has managed to colorfully populate. Christianity has never arisen in his world and any sort of technological advance stagnated around the time the Roman Republic gave way to the Empire. Instead, magic has become a real presence in this world (much like J. Gregory Keyes's recent "Age of Unreason" series or Randall Garrett's "Lord Darcy" stories). Harlan follows several characters through their adventures as a war begins between the Roman Empire and the Persian Empire. The Emperors of the East and West, Heraclius and Galen, have elected to join forces and annex Persia once and for all. These events are seen through the eyes and actions of Dwyrin, an apprentice sorcerer plucked from training in Egypt before he was ready, Thyatis, a female spy who has been set in charge of warrior, and Maxian, the youngest brother of the western emperor and a sorcerer in his own right. Harlan manages to weave their highly different stories together, occasionally introducing his characters to each other and just as quickly pulling them apart, as he weaves the rich tapestry of a civilization throughout the novel. Even when he only follows a character for a couple of pages, he manages to bring the character to life and make them memorable, which allows him to get away with rapid transitions from character to character.

The Shadow of Ararat
by Thomas Harlan
A book review by Mark L. Olson
Tor Fantasy, 1999, 510 pp, $26.95
If this book had been 10% shorter it would be one of the best fantasies I've read. As it is, it's one of the best SF books I've read this year and will probably be on my Hugo list. The Shadow of Ararat takes place around 600 AD in an alternate world where a thousand years earlier magic was harnessed. So the world is different: There is no Christianity, and while there is a Judaism with a Torah, it's a dualistic religion. (Though the world is not different enough. Recognizable historical figures exist up until around 400 AD. It's as if Harlan had magic kick in at 400 BC, but history really didn't change much until 800 years later. Ridiculous, of course, but it does make for a much better story!) Besides the intrusion of magic into the world, the second great change was that in this world around 400 AD, the Western Roman Empire beat back the barbarians and the Western and Eastern Empires are both alive and thriving. In fact, at the time of the story, the Western empire is a lot healthier than the Eastern. There are five threads to the story which interweave throughout and will doubtless be followed on into the sequel(s).

Thomas Harlan Ellett (1880-1951)
Beaux-Arts Drawing, 1908. Graduating first in his class in architecture in 1906 from the University of Pennyslvania, Ellett won the Gold Brooke Medal, and continued his studies as a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. His impeccably conceived residences, married to handsomely designed gardens, put him in the forefront of a large and talented group of architects, whose creations epitomized the confident pre-depression society of the years immediately before and after World War I. It was, however, for his Cosmopolitan Club in New York City that he received his highest award, the Gold Medal of the Architectural League of New York, in 1933. In the later depression years of the 1930's, he built a series of post offices; the most distinguished as well as the largest was for the Bronx, New York.
About the Collection
The collection of sixty-eight projects designed between 1915 and 1948 includes eighteen hundred and thirty-four personal sketches and presentation renderings, three hundred seventy-four working drawings and one hundred and seventy-nine photographs as well his travel records, office ledger and certificates. Gift of Mr.and Mrs. W.H. Benjamin, 1985.

Many horrible things happened in Poland during the war. The author of this magnificent, harrowing novel was a teenage leader in a Hitler youth corps, but once he grew up the scales fell from his eyes and from 1964 onwards he devoted himself to research into these happenings. Rosa is built on his findings over the best part of four decades. The link is a film-maker, Richard, who is researching an atrocity which has poisoned the ground in a remote woodland area in Poland. In the course of his enquiries he discovers the whereabouts of a number of people who had supposedly died or disappeared. Their testimony, given in various forms and styles, provides the narrative framework of the book. Some of these witnesses are almost illiterate. They are so distressed by remembering what happened that the jerky style in which their interviews are transcribed makes it clear that they could hardly get their words out. Other evidence comes from documents and files (all fictional, one supposes) in Poland and in France. Richard's narrative is often poetic, evocative of the classical German authors and composers to whom he frequently refers. We discover that he spent his last years in Africa with the White Fathers and that his film was never made. But his narrative zigzags backwards and forwards to build up a cinematic picture of what happened and to whom. Many local villagers were aware of what was going on but not themselves much involved. Others were. Rosa, the central figure, had a large bucketful of gold wedding rings, presumably booty from the camp. Franz Manderholz, a Nazi with whom she had had an affair, was sent by the Germans to fight in Italy, had his jaw shot away by Slovenian partisans, but survived to give evidence.

Thomas Harlan was born in 1929. As a child he met both Hitler and Goebbels, and during World War Two served as a leader in the Hitler Marine youth corps. After completing his schooling in Germany, he moved to Paris in 1948, where he studied philosophy. He has written poetry and drama in both French and German, and written and directed many successful films, in particular Torre Bela , premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1976, and Wundkanal, at the Berlin Film Festival in 1985. He first visited the site of the little-known Polish concentration camp in Kulmhof in 1959. It is on this, and his subsequent research in Poland, Germany, France and Italy, that this novel is based. Rosa is his first prose work in German. Translation rights available from

    Wasteland of Flint Thomas Harlan
Even when I try to ignore the psychological and social oddities of space opera aristocracies, I get hung up on the historical ones. I don't have to accept the entire, what?, Weberian thesis that Northern European Protestantism was the necessary and sufficient matrix for technological takeoff to be puzzled by ancient cultures surviving massive technological change. It should be more destabilizing. The States has scarcely kept its plutocracy through three hundred years on one planet; it doesn't seem very likely that Iron Age social structures would last through half a millennium of interstellar colonization. Samurai William suggests. For all I know Harlan altered large chunks of it as though they had experienced something as complicated as Protestantism, universal suffrage, and the rise of the technocratic middle class. Doesn't sound like it, much. Nor was there room, I admit; it's a thick brisk book. In small details, it's straightforward and suspends disbelief nicely. The archaeologists sent to the wrecked planet of the elder races are perpetually concerned with boots, publication, warm hats, censorship, fuel-line repairs, military intervention, the social problems of crushes in camp, and nanotech chilblains. (Suspension of disbelief w.r.t. the main outlines is a matter of taste.) I think the social interactions are well-done, especially when Harlan just describes them without giving us explanatory flashbacks and social commentary.
