G retchen Anderssen is a xeno-archeologist, who makes a living unearthing ancient artefacts left by long gone races. The most prized of these artefacts come from the First Sun era. These races were so far ahead of ours they can be considered almost Gods and even their remnants can be very, very dangerous indeed. On her way to a routine dig, Gretchen finds herself suddenly diverted, placed in charge of a team sent to recover a survey team who've dropped out of contact in mysterious circumstances. Adding to her sense that this situation isn't quite right is the fact that an Imperial warship has been given over to the team for transportation. On board is an Imperial nauallis - an Aztec aristocrat and sort of judge/priest charged with protecting the human Imperial Mexica Empire against First Sun threats to its existence.

Book cover art by Stephen Hickman. AUTHOR'S SITE THOMAS HARLAN Even if it weren't a debut novel, the sheer prodigious immensity of The Shadow of Ararat By 622 C.E., the Roman Empire has been divided in half (as it was by the 4th century), with the traditional capital of the Western Empire still nestled in Roma Mater under the benevolent rule of the emperor Galen. The Eastern Empire's capital, naturally, is Constantinople, where the emperor Heraclius finds himself faced with not only the constant threat of invasion from the Persians, but the scheming of the eastern dukes under his rule. Though the Western Empire seems more secure politically, its populace has been ravaged in recent years by plague; Rome faces a shortage of noble sons to fill positions of rank and even suitable legionnaires for its armies. The Eastern Empire, by contrast, has managed to avoid the plague and its population is healthy and robust; but it faces some immediate and dire threats. The most pressing of these is Persia itself, which has harried the Eastern Empire for many years with the help of evil magicians who call forth dark reinforcements from the unseen world. Heraclius has decided upon a plan of invasion no less ambitious than something Alexander himself might have cooked up: nail the Persians before they nail Rome, regardless of the fact that no prior Roman attempt to take the Persian capital of Ctesiphon and unseat their King of Kings has ever met with anything remotely resembling success. This time, though, Heraclius has the full support of Galen. Though the Western Empire cannot muster much in the way of an army, Galen realizes that only a united Rome can presume to march upon Persia and have any hope of victory. So Galen journeys to Constantinople, leaving his younger brothers Aurelian and Maxian behind to mind Rome in his absense.

Review of THE DARK LORD by Thomas Harlan
BOOK FOUR OF THE OATH OF EMPIRE
TOR, July 2002 Constantanople has fallen and the armies of Persia stand ready to conquer the western Empire as well. In Rome, chaos has taken control. The Emperor Galen tries to rally his troops while his spies conspire among themselves, his wife gets petty and paranoid, his brother Maxim whines for new magical toys, and the ancient and now undead Julius Caesar tries to decide whether his master would be better served by allowing Galen to remain in control, or to toss him out. The Persian armies, together with Greek troops who rebelled against deceitful Constantinople, and Arabs who continue to fight for their lost Mohammed, are buttressed by magicand have their own undead forces to bear. When the Persians take a detour to Egypt (chasing the McGuffin of a magical viewer), Rome has time to preparebut fails to use it. Meanwhile, Mohammed lies near death and receives enlightenment. The past mistakes he has made become clear to him as he lies beneath a fig tree. Author Thomas Harlan ( see all BooksForABuck.com reviews of novels by this author

THE STORM OF HEAVEN by Thomas Harlan ( see his website
BOOK THREE OF THE OATH OF EMPIRE
TOR, June 2001 The victory of the united Eastern and Western Roman Empires against their ancient Persian enemy has been washed away by incompetence in the east and Prince Maxim's weakening of the Oath of Empire in the west (see our reviews of THE SHADOW OF ARARAT and THE GATE OF FIRE for a discussion of these earlier events). Now, the Eastern Emperor lies critically ill and his wife and brother battle for control while a revitalized Persia and the desert tribes led by Mohammed threaten to bring the attack all the way to Constantinople. The focus of this third novel in the series has shifted from Prince Maxim of the Western Empire to his revived helpers, Julius Caesar and Alexander the Great, as well as Zoe of Palmyra and her wizard friend/enemy, Dwyrin, as well as the memory-lost Diana/Thyatis. Caesar and Alexander continually plot and scheme to help Maxim, but without any particular concern for the ethical issues that wrack the prince. Maxim, his brother the Emperor Galen, the Eastern Emperor Theodore, and Galen's spy-mistress Anastasia all seem paralized over guilt, grief, or hopelessness as the forces of evil slowly grind away at the ancient Roman Empire. In this alternate history version of the Roman Empire, magic works, the Christian religion never flourished, and a powerful oath holds Rome together, but at terrible cost. The oath holds Rome in a strange form of stasis, brutally destroying anything that it sees as a threat to Rome. As Maxim had noted, any progress or technological advance can be seen as a threat to the oath. Yet Maxim has weakened the oath, only to see destruction rather than a gale of creativity. With both Rome and Persia his enemies, Maxim's friends have their jobs cut out for them.

Things I have been involved in: SF Awards 2000: Best New Writer Thomas Harlan Thomas Harlan's first book, Shadow of Ararat, was released in July of 1999. The first book in a four book series, Shadow of Ararat was received well by the science fiction community. He was nominated for the Campbell award last year and the first two books have been translated into French (which I think is cool). To see some of the reviews check out his website , since the reviewers can do the book more justice than I ever could. The second book in the series, Gate of Fire is out in hardback and soon to be released in paperback, and the third, Storm of Heaven will be released in June of 2001. Just recently the second book was listed on Barnes and Noble's Best of 2000 list in Science Fiction and Fantasy. Thomas also created a play-by-mail game The Lords of the Earth where the player is the ruler of a coutry which he or she tries to improve upon. The game has quite a few different campaigns running, with hundreds of players from around the world participating.
