THE COUNTRY OF WESSEX which includes Dorset is familiar to all Hardy fans. Far From the Madding Crowd, now has a sequel called Weatherbury Farm . Written as homage to Hardy, by a devoted fan, Patricia Dolling-Mann , the book is published by Xlibris. The country of the novel is Puddletown and its environs as in FFMC. In Far From the Madding Crowd, which is perhaps Thomas Hardy’s most popular novel, we leave Gabriel Oak and Bathsheba Everdene newly-married. Now, many years on, Bathsheba’s husband and three almost grown-up children have superseded the three diverse suitors of her youth. Bathsheba’s caprice and wilfulness has been replaced with the trials and tribulations of family life. All three children reject the careers chosen for them by their parents to become evermore cosmopolitan in their lives and outlook. As the children mature and need her less, Bathsheba becomes involved with Gabriel’s mission to improve the working and living conditions of agricultural labourers. She strives against prejudice to form a women’s movement to uphold and promote the rights of Union members’ wives. But as Industrialisation filters slowly into Hardy’s Victorian rural scenes, the Oak family find Wessex life is changing forever. Is this change for the better?

    Thomas Hardy
Thomas hardy was born in Upper Brockhampton, near Dorchester, England. He was educated locally and at 16 was articled to an architect. At 22 he went to London to train as an architect, and returned home in 1867 to persue his chosen profession. But he had already begon his first novel The Poor Man and the Lady , which was never published. There is speculation that around this time he met and fell in love with Tryphena Sparks, to whom he was related. The nature of their relationship is unclear but 1868 he was sent to St. Juliot, Cornwell, where he met Emma Gifford, whom he married in 1874. This marriage was far from idyllic, but ,ironically, when Emma died in 1912 Hardy was moved to write some of the most moving love poems in the English language. Among his best novels are The return of the Native The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886) and Tess of the D’Urbervilles (1891). After the critical reception of Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure (1895), which were publicly attacked for their subject matter and portrayal of sexual relationships, Hardy turned his attention to poetry, which he had always regarded as superior to fiction. Autumn in King's Hintock Park
Here by the baring bough Raking up leaves, Often I ponder how Springtime deceives,- I, an old woman now, Raking up leaves. Here in the avenue Raking up leaves Lords' ladies pass in view, Until one heaves Sighs at life's russet hue, Raking up leaves! Just as my shape you see Raking up leaves, I saw, when fresh and free, Those memory weaves Into grey ghosts by me, Raking up leaves. Yet, Dear, though one may sigh, Raking up leaves, New leaves will dance on high- Earth never grieves!- Will not, when missed am I Raking up leaves.
