KNUT HAMSUN (1859 - 1952)
Knut Hamsun was born on 4 August 1859 in Garmo Grimstad , during the night of 19 February 1952. A life of 92 years and 6 months, stretching from the age of horse-drawn carriages to that of the atom bomb. A life full of restlessness and complications, yet at the same time a life rich in experiences. And, most important of all, a life in the service of words.
One is tempted to ask whether it is at all possible to find a leitmotiv through this life, something which can bind all the individual events into a meaningful whole. Some commentators have tried to reduce the marathon of Hamsun´s life to a mere 100-metre Nazi sprint, thinking that in this way they would be able to forge a key which could be used to unlock the "enigma" Knut Hamsun. It is a rather worthless key: it fits the lock too poorly. The only tool of any real potential use to someone wishing to fathom Hamsun and his work is an understanding of his relationship with words.
His creative talent, his very ability to write was, then, of crucial significance to Hamsun; it was his alpha and his omega. Oscar Wilde wrote in a letter that "to the artist, expression is the only mode under which he can conceive life at all". As for Wilde so for Hamsun; writing became a sort of affirmation that he was still alive.
From his early youth, Hamsun was absorbed by the opportunities of expression afforded by words and language, and by their secret lives. In 1888, two years before his breakthrough came with "Hunger" (

He is one of the great writers of the twentieth century
, though his best works were written before 1900. He is one of the most influential European novelists of the last hundred years, yet he is not well known in the United States. Winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, the most important Norwegian author since Ibsen, he is often ignored in his own country. He is Knut Hamsun novelist of genius, radical individualist, supporter of Hitler, Quisling, and the Nazi occupation of Norway during World War II. Hamsun, in Mysteries, Pan, and Hunger, wrote three of the greatest novels of the late nineteenth century, novels which created a new literary style and which delineated a new literary hero: the alienated loner. In Growth of the Soil (1917), he produced an epic agrarian novel that describes, with Biblical power, the attraction and honesty of working with the land. His work was widely admired in the first half of the twentieth century, with writers as diverse as Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse, and Henry Miller citing Hamsun's work as being of special importance and influence. Isaac Bashevis Singer, in his essay "Knut Hamsun, Artist of Skepticism" goes so far as to claim that "the whole modern school of fiction in the twentieth century stems from Hamsun." Hamsun's reputation waned rapidly following World War II. Charged with treason for his support of the Norwegian Nazi Party (Nasjonal Samling), his works went out of favor in Norway and elsewhere. As with other writers who supported the Axis powers Ezra Pound, for example Hamsun's work has had a difficult time regaining the prominence it enjoyed before the war.

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Knut Hamsun (1859-1952) - pseudonym of Knut Pederson Norwegian novelist, dramatist, poet, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920. Among Hamsun's most famous novels is Hunger , an intense story of a starving writer, which has attracted readers since its publication in 1890. Before and during World War II the author supported the Nazis. This separated Hamsun from other intellectuals and writers who supported the Soviet Union and Stalin. After the war Hamsun was consequently ostracized as a traitor. "If one only had something to eat, just a little, on such a clear day! The mood of the gay morning overwhelmed me, I became unusually serene, and started to hum for pure joy and for no particular reason. In front of a butcher's shop there was a woman with a basket on her arm, debating about some sausage for dinner; as I went past, she looked up at me. She had only a single tooth in the lower jaw. In the nervous and excitable state I was on, her face made an instant and revolting impression on me - the long yellow tooth looked like a finger sticking out of her jaw, and as she turned toward me, her eyes wee full of sausage. I lost my appetite instantly, and felt nauseated." (from Hunger Knut Hamsun was born in Lom in the Gudbrandsdalen Valley in central Norway, as the fourth son of Peder Petersen, a skilled itinerant tailor, and Tora (Olsdatter Garmotraedet) Pedersen. When Hamsun was three the family moved to the town of Hamarøy, some 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle. There Peder Petersen took charge a farm, owned by his brother-in-law Hans Olsen, who ran the village library and post office. Olsen became a victim of paralytic illness and claimed that the Pedersens owed him money. Hamsun was not allowed to play with the other children but he started to work for Olsen, keep the post office accounts, and chop wood, to pay the debt to him,. Later Hamsun returned in his works to his ill treatment - Olsen he called "red-bearded messenger of death."

Hamsun, oil painting by an unknown artist, 1919 By courtesy of the Nobel Foundation, Stockholm pseudonym of KNUT PEDERSEN (b. Aug. 4, 1859, Lom, Nor.d. Feb. 19, 1952, near Grimstad), Norwegian novelist, dramatist, poet, and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920. A leader of the Neo-Romantic revolt at the turn of the century, he rescued the novel from a tendency toward excessive naturalism. 10 years, he worked as a casual labourer. Twice he visited the United States, where he worked as a streetcar conductor in Chicago and a farmhand in North Dakota. His first publication was the novel Sult Hunger 1899), the story of a starving young writer in Norway. Sult marked a clear departure from the social realism of the typical Norwegian novel of the period. Its refreshing viewpoint and impulsive, lyrical style had an electrifying effect on European writers. Hamsun followed his first success with a series of lectures attacking such idols as Ibsen and Tolstoy, and he produced a flow of works that continued until his death. Like the asocial heroes of his early works e.g.

Mer
Hun hadde selv mottatt prisen i 1909.

http://www.mnc.net/norway/hamsun.htm
There are those who would hold that the name of Knut Hamsun should appear prominently on any list of "great Norwegians" for he was a Norwegian, and his literary works reflected genius and artistry. It is true that he brought credit to his homeland in 1920 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature (for "The Growth of the Soil" penned in 1917). But it is also true that as years went on, he became devoted to the cause of the Nazis, and made a gift of his Nobel Prize Medal to Hitler lieutenant Joseph Goebbels. When the Nazis barged into Norway, establishing a puppet government, nearly every Norwegian reviled at the occupation and discerned clearly the evil in the cause of the occupiers. Hamsun welcomed the invading troops. At the war's end, Hamsun, once a hero to Norway, was convicted in connection with his pro-Nazi activities and heavily fined being spared imprisonment undoubtedly in deference to his literary contributions and age. While the works of Hamsun may be entitled to reverence for their greatness, can the

Knut Hamsun Fra det moderne Amerikas Aandsliv (1889) [The Intellectual Life of Modern America]. The novel Sult (1890) [Hunger] and even more so Pan (1894) established him as one of the foremost Norwegian writers.
Hamsun's work is determined by a deep aversion to civilization and the belief that man's only fulfilment lies with the soil. This primitivism (and its concomitant distrust of all things modern) found its fullest expression in Hamsun's masterpiece Growth of the Soil ]. His early works usually centre on an outcast, a vagabond figure, aggressively opposed to civilization. In his middle period, Hamsun's aggressiveness gives way to melancholy resignation about the loss of youth. The decay of age is the theme of such plays as Livets Spil (1896) [Game of Life] and (1898) [ Sunset], as well as of the novels Under the Autumn Star Benoni (1908), and En Vandrer Spiller med Sordin A Wanderer Plays on Muted Strings ]. In 1904 Hamsun also published a volume of poems, Det vilde Kor [The Wild Chorus].
