Dashiell Hammett E scritor de relatos policiacos. Nació en el condado de St Marys (Maryland). Dejó la escuela a los 13 años para trabajar en diversos oficios y en diferentes lugares del país. Después de la I Guerra Mundial fue detective privado, experiencia que le proporcionaría material para sus novelas. Las dos primeras, Cosecha roja (1929) y La maldición de los Dain (1929), le llevaron de inmediato a la fama. El halcón maltés (1930), en la que Hammett da vida a su personaje más conocido, Sam Spade, fue la pionera del estilo de novela negra policiaca. Hammett destaca sobre todo por su realismo, por la franqueza con que dibuja a sus personajes y escribe su diálogo, así como por el impacto con que se desarrolla el argumento, que supone la descripción gráfica de actos brutales, y por las actitudes sociales hipócritas y cínicas. Está considerado como el autor que ennobleció la novela policiaca y que demostró que también en este género se pueden denunciar las corrupciones políticas y económicas, aunque nada de todo esto está reñido con el humor, y su novela El hombre delgado (1932) es un ejemplo de ello. En el escritor español Manuel Vázquez Montalbán pueden seguirse sus huellas. Varias de sus novelas fueron más tarde adaptadas a programas populares de radio y al cine, y también escribió guiones en Hollywood. Durante la era McCarthy, a finales de los años cuarenta y principios de los cincuenta, fue acusado de comunista, y en 1951 estuvo encarcelado un tiempo por "actividades antiamericanas". Fue durante muchos años compañero de la dramaturga y novelista Lillian Hellman. ©

Hammett was much more than a successful writer. In his lifetime he worked as a strikebreaker for the Pinkertons Detective Agency, whilst incapacitated with TB he wrote advertising copy, he had a spell as a Hollywood writer, he had an intimate friendship with the playwright Lillian Hellman and was persecuted and imprisoned by Joseph McCarthy. Oh and he blew all of his substantial earnings on women and alcohol! We hope to bring something of all of these aspects of Hammett's career to life in the pages of these files as well as discuss his works and his legacy as writer. D ashiell Hammett was born on the eastern shore of Maryland in 1894. The second of three children, he dropped out of school at the age of thirteen. He worked a succession of low-paying jobs including freight clerk, railroad laborer, messenger boy, and stevedore. In 1915 he began working on and off as a detective for the Pinkerton Agency. In less than ten years he would be turning these experiences into some of the most popular detective stories of his time. Unlike the intellectualized mysteries of earlier detective novels, Hammett's less-than-glamorous realism transformed the genre into a serious response to the urban culture of the times. Hammett spent his early twenties working as a detective in San Francisco before enlisting in the army during World War I. He became a sergeant in the Motor Ambulance Corp, where he contracted tuberculosis. Upon returning from the service, he realized that his ailing health made it impossible to continue as a detective. Quitting the agency, he tried his hand at writing. His first story was published in 1922 by the upscale society magazine THE SMART SET. His new gritty style of detective story, however, was better suited to the pulp crime magazines of the time. In 1923, one of the most popular, BLACK MASK, published his story "Arson Plus." Spade's parable of Flitcraft.
