By Pete Hamill Travel books about Mexico are a rarity these days. That was not always the case; my own collection contains more than 100 books from the 1930s and 1940s alone, ranging from bilious accounts by Graham Greene and Aldous Huxley to a sketchy watercolor of a book by D.H. Lawrence. Most of the rest are truly awful in a charming, innocent way; there was a virtual sub-genre written by lonely women who fled the United States to rediscover humanity under the Mexican sun, usually in the company of a boy named Paco. To be sure, the bookstore shelves are thick with volumes about Mexico, particularly those guides for tourists that contain so many facts and so little truth. But the book by a traveler who digs more deeply into the spirit of a place, the character of its people, art, history and culture is written more often these days about Tuscany or Provence.

The legendary newsman, a veteran of all three of the city's tabloids, returned to the New York Daily News on January 1 for what he's calling the "third act" of his long and storied career. But this time , instead of being on the front line, walking the streets in search of tomorrow's headlines, Hamill, 61, is the editor , dispatching a new generation of Hamills, Breslins and Ephrons to the streets, subways and alleys of the Big Apple.

Porter, a CJR contributing editor, is director of journalism at Brooklyn College and an adjunct professor at Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism As usual the tie had disappeared, the feet were up on the desk, the glasses nestled on top of a head of fading red hair, and in between biting large chunks out of a mozzarella-and-tomato hero dripping with Tuscan olive oil, Pete Hamill was doing one of the things he enjoys most, which is spinning out a romance concerning the newspaper business. "At some point everybody sits around talking late at night and dreaming up the perfect paper," he was saying. "Usually, it's 'Goddammit, these idiots don't know how to run this thing. If we could get our hands on it we'd know what to do.' We all felt editors were trimming the best lines out of stories, or didn't recognize stories staring them in the face, or were filling the paper with stuff that was boring. There had to be a paper somewhere on which all the reporters were fabulous, all the writing was great, where the layout was slam-bang and elegant at the same time, and where people couldn't wait to get up in the morning and read it, and after you read it you felt you were not going to be the same again. We called it 'God's Paper.'"

For the centennial of James Farrell's birth the Library of America presents a collector's edition of his classic Studs Lonigan Trilogy. One of the masterpieces of American naturalism, the Studs Lonigan trilogy follows the hopes and dissipations of its remarkable main character-a would-be "tough guy" and archetypal adolescent, born to Irish-American parents on Chicago's South Side-through the turbulent years of the First World War, the roaring twenties, and the Great Depression. Its three novels - Young Lonigan, The Young Manhood of Studs Lonigan, and Judgment Day-offer an unparalleled sense of the textures of real life: of the institutions of Catholicism, the poolroom and the dance marathon, romance and marriage, gangsterism and ethnic rivalry, and the slang of the street corner. Pete Hamill, editor, is a celebrated novelist and columnist who currently writes for The New York Daily News. He is the author of eight novels and two collections of stories, including

Spring 2003 Forever Pete Hamill by S. Clayton Moore ete Hamill has reached a new zenith with his new novel, Forever. It is an epic chronicle not only of the life of a man but the birth of one of America's most vibrant and diverse citieswith all the blood, sacrifices, and human frailties that great cities require. At its heart is Cormac O'Connor, who chases a dastardly Earl from Ireland to the teeming shores of Manhattan seeking revenge for the death of his father, a blacksmith who literally forged swords from plowshares. The story is rich with the myths of the world's primal cultures from Ireland, Africa, and Mexico, and Hamill tries to find a common foundation among them. The central theme involves the Irish story of Tir Na Nog, the land of eternal youth, which in legend is always found to the west of the old country. In the course of his pursuit, he saves the life of an African shaman, who gives him a blessing and a curse; young Cormac is given life everlasting, but even eternity has rules. Cormac must live his long life on the island of Manhattan and glory in all that it has to offer: To find work that you love, and work harder than the other men. To learn the languages of the earth and love the sounds of the words and the things they describe. To love food and music and drink. Fully love them. To love weather, and storms, and the smell of rain. To love heat. To love cold. To love sleep and dreams. To love the newness of each day.
