Life in exile Like so many others, Celia Cruz dreamed she'd someday high-heel her way home The Queen of Salsa never made it home. In an odyssey that stretched across more than 40 years, Celia Cruz heard the roar of crowds from New York to Tokyo, from Mexico City to Paris. She came before them in celebration of those things that always go beyond the dictates of commissars of left or right: music, dance, the words of flirtation and the hope that someone across a room on a lonesome Saturday night might actually love you back. The audiences did not always understand the words, but they always understood what Celia Cruz was saying. And they roared: for her, and for what she was telling them. That is, they roared for life.

On Seduction:
It was possible for me as a kid to come from Brooklyn, go to Manhattan, and experience the theater, go to see the theater. I could afford it as a kid. After I got out of the Navy and I wanted to be a writer or a painter, I was able to go and get an apartment for $60 a month. You couldn't do that now; I couldn't rent a parking spot for $60 a month. So there was a message that the city whispered to its people and to people from all over the United States. "Come here everything is possible." Now that's a seductive sound. It's a seductive whisper.
On Growing Up:
One of the things that I miss the most was what it felt like in the subway between the hours of five and seven. Being on packed subway cars with working men on those cars. Guys stained with sweat, the smell of perspiration, the raw-knuckled hands, the toolboxes, heading home. Nobody would mess with guys like that. And they were very proud of the fact that they were working in the biggest city in the United States they were functioning people.
On What Binds New Yorkers:
People moved and the subway then became one of these great binding elements in the city that moved people around and put them up against each other. And sometimes they came up against each other in conflict, but the conflict didn't ever last very long. The Irish fought the Italians until they started marrying them. And then they both fought the Jews until they started marrying them. You know, people began to say, "Hey, there's something more here. If the subway doesn't work, it doesn't work for all of us. If there's a snowstorm, it affects all of us."

"Forever"
Brick and mortar booksellers are going to have a hard time categorizing the latest work by journalist Pete Hamill. Forever is the story of a young Irishman who immigrates to America in 1741, befriends an African shaman and is granted the gift of eternal life, as long as he stays on the island of Manhattan. The closest category I could devise would be "magically real historical fiction with a little bit of urban biography thrown in for good measure." Try finding that on the shelves of your local Barnes and Noble. Luckily, online, we have no such restrictions and may as just call it a pretty good read. Forever Hamill is a journalist of course, not a historian or a novelist, so we get quite a bit about the sanctity of journalism and its evolution in the streets of New York. He is aware of sensory details and we learn a great deal about the sights, sounds, and especially the smells of New York. Let's face it, for a long time the city stunk. The lack of water and the feral pigs didn't help matters much. In 2001, a slightly less malodorous time, Cormac meets a young Dominican woman, Delfina Citron. We find out about 200 pages from the end that she works in the World Trade Center, and he is careful to tell us her office is on the 84th floor. Hamill had originally finished this book on September 10, 2001 and had to rewrite the ending in order to accommodate the events of September 11. He deals with the tragedy head on, personalizing it for Cormac in a most profound way.

Interview with John Hechinger, Sr. and Pete Hamill
TOOLS AS ART: The Hechinger Collection (Abrams, $ 39.95) by John Hechinger, Sr. and Pete Hamill. TOOLS contains 240 color plates and the work of more than 150 artists. John Hechinger , of Hechinger's Hardware, began collecting the fabulous 300-piece art collection displayed in this book seventeen years ago.
Pete Hamill , popular writer and best-selling author of A Drinking Life , has written the text. Interview with John Hechinger, Sr. and Pete Hamill: BC: So, how did you two get hooked up?
JH: We were introduced by our publisher, Paul Gottlieb.
BC: Tell us something about the book. It really is beautiful.
JH: Well, I remember reading once in Smithsonian Magazine that sex is merely the sublimation of man's desire to browse in hardware stores.
BC: Ha Ha. But really, how did this collection get started?
We had a new corporate office building for Hechinger's Hardware. It was state of the art in every respect. There were miles of corridor, and forty to fifty windowless offices. It was boring! Some of my associates had admired a Jim Dine in our boardroom and the rest is history.
I thought that if we could put these artists on the walls, it would raise the consciousness of the people who were dealing everyday in tens and thousands of the same item. It would raise the level of respect for their own job. It would help them see that their job was one of dignity.

The Damon Runyon Award, 1997-98

Whether as editor, columnist, novelist or reporter, Hamill has always stamped his work with the same intensely personal style and sharp, vivid language.
While he is often lumped among the so-called "new journalists" who came to fame in the 1970s, Hamill really came from the old school of newspaper writing.
"Newspaper people were flamboyant, hard-drinking bohemian anarchists, with great gifts for obscenity and a cynicism based on experience. Or so I thought," Hamill wrote in Piecework , a 1996 collection of his non-fiction. "I loved being in their company, in city rooms, at murder scenes, or standing in the bar after work."
"For me, the work was everything," he wrote. "In my experience, nothing before (or since) could compare with walking into The New York Post at midnight, being sent into the dark scary city on assignment and coming back to write a story for the first edition."
"No day was like any other's, no story repeated any other in its details. Day after day, week after week, I loved being a newspaperman, living in the permanent present tense of the trade."

Snow in August
Author Info: Pete Hamill
It's 1947 in Brooklyn and altar boy Michael Devlin is 11 years old. He lives for the Brooklyn Dodgers, comic books, Saturday matinees and his Mother who was widowed during the War. But now his whole insular world is about to change. The Dodgers have a new player and he's black. Michael has a new friend and he's a Jewish rabbiJudah Hirsch, a refugee from the Holocaust. And Michael and the rabbi have offended the local gang of Irish toughs, The Falcons and their brutal leader, Frankie McCarthy. Just when it seemed that the War had vanquished evil, it turns out that the malevolent forces of racism and hatred have a foothold in Michael's own neighborhood. In order to survive, Michael, his mother and the rabbi have to call upon resources that they don't even realize that they possess, including even the dreadful Golem of Jewish mystic tradition. I'm not a huge Pete Hamill fan and the political agendas that are at work here are a little bit heavy handed (particularly in one fight scene at Ebbett's Field). But I'm as big a sucker as anybody for those magical fantasies of boyhood (see Boy's Life by Robert McCammon, Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury, etc.) and what really makes this book a terrific read is the relationship between Michael and Rabbi Hirsch. Michael's friends originally put him up to finding the secret buried treasure of the Jews that they think lies buried within the synagogue. But as Michael helps the rabbi with his English and teaches him about America and the rabbi in turn teaches him Yiddish and unfolds the beauties of preWar Europe, Michael discovers that the real secret treasure is love of learning.

60. Review | Forever By Pete Hamill

http://www.januarymagazine.com/fiction/foreverhamil.html
Forever by Pete Hamill 613 pages, 2003 The Never-ending Story Reviewed by David Abrams Pete Hamill knows New York. As editor of both the New York Post and the New York Daily News and frequent contributor to the New York Times and The New Yorker , there's little doubt his passion for and knowledge of the city and its people runs deep. Cut his veins, he probably bleeds apple juice. In his latest novel, Forever , Hamill takes that love and understanding and wraps NYC in a big, smothery embrace. Emphasis on the smothering part. Forever is ambitious and frequently unsuccessful as it tries to chart a huge chunk of Gotham history in 600 tedious pages. On the passage to America, Cormac befriended some of the African slaves; that friendship is later rewarded when a shaman gives Cormac the "gift" of eternal life so that he can wreak his revenge on future generations of Warrens. One stipulation: Cormac cannot set foot off Manhattan Island (or, I imagine, he'll turn into a pillar of salt). The book requires readers to check their disbelief at the front door. If you cannot accept the fact that a little voodoo can give a 20-something Irish lad unblemished eternal life sort of like a centuries-old Dick Clark then you won't be able to squeeze even the smallest pleasure from this novel.
