Pete Hamill is Editor in Chief of the Daily News, a journalist, novelist, and author. He wrote the liner notes for Bob Dylan's album "Blood On The Tracks". Date: Wed, 11 Jun 1997 09:51:29 +0100 From: Alan Fraser To: karlerik@online.no Subject: Peter Hamill Hello Karl Erik, I respect your wish not to copy material from other sites. The URL of the page I copied to you is: http://www.bookwire.com/BookInfo.Author$46 The liner notes that Pete wrote for Blood On The Tracks, and for which he won a Grammy Award, are reprinted at: http://www.slopbucket.com/bob/tbob/bott.html (updated to new URL 30.03.2000 KEA) The ironic thing is of course that the notes were only on the first printing of the album sleeve, and had been removed by the time Pete won his award. They are still not printed on the CD insert, although I hope they'll reappear if Sony do a remastered or gold version of BOTT. Clinton Heylin believes the notes were removed because they refer to the original "New York" versions of the songs later re-recorded in Minnesota. Personally, I can't anything in them that is invalidated by the re-recording. Amusingly, the notes are reprinted unofficially on the CD insert for the new Blood On The Tapes bootleg. There is another (English) Peter Hamill who was the keyboard player with the Manchester prog-rock group Van Der Graaf Generator, and is now a record producer. Our Peter Hamill is not he. The first voice you hear is that of SAJAer Mukul Pandya , an editor at Wharton Business School, who introduced Hamill. More than 45 SAJA and AAJA-NY members attended the event. Hamill discussed the role of newspaperspast, present and future; the future of New York City; the importance of immigration in shaping society; journalists who write novels; and his love of writing and reading. One highlight: SAJAer Priya Malhotra asked him how it's possible to make time to read literature when you are always rushing to keep up with current events. His answer was simple: "Read like a predator." He meant read like your life depended on it. Make time to read, the way you make time to go to the gym, the way you make time to watch TV. It's Far From Land Of Milk and Honey
Afghanis face poverty, illness
by Pete Hamill
New York Daily News 9-18-2001

The immediate target of American wrath lies at 33 degrees north latitude, 65 degrees east, and its official name is the Islamic State of Afghanistan. It is, by virtually any standard, one of the most wretched countries on Earth. And it is a terrible place in which to fight a war. Ask the British. Ask the Russians.
All military leaders remember that peak American troop strength in Vietnam was roughly 500,000. To match that ratio of troops to land area, the Americans and their allies would need to send in a minimum of a million troops.
The country is landlocked, mountainous and arid, with brutal summers and fierce winters. The tallest peak is Nowshak, at 25,000 feet. The southwestern deserts get less than 9 inches of rain a year. Only 12% of the land is arable, and because of a prolonged drought, overgrazing, the cutting of trees for fuel and soil degradation, even that small percentage of land is turning to dust. Twenty-five percent of the population is on the edge of starvation. Farmers have been converted into nomads, searching for water and grass:
"The herds are often below a sustainable size," said a report from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. "There are few or no lactating animals, and there are evident signs of dehydration and malnutrition. These nomads are gathering near towns or canals or other potential water sources. The same water is used by animals and by humans for drinking, washing and sanitation."

How to live 'Forever' in New York
Writer Pete Hamill crafts a valentine to his city
Pete Hamill had to extensively rewrite his new book, "Forever," after the September 11 attacks. Story Tools RELATED Review: 'Forever' a cheery cornball epic NEW YORK (AP) A fortresslike metal door guards the entrance to writer Pete Hamill's Tribeca home. The door opens to a drab, industrial foyer where an equally unpromising elevator chugs up to the author's floor. There, everything brightens. Waiting in an open door is Hamill, 67, trim and relaxed. His silvering hair is cut short, his face a complex map of laugh lines. His voice is gravelly, the result of a recent brush with bronchitis. He leads a visitor into a warm and quiet apartment. The walls are cluttered with paintings, hefty art books and Mexican masks, each face carved into a colorful rictus. In a way, Hamill's apartment mirrors the homes he created for Cormac O'Connor, protagonist of Hamill's new novel about immortality, "Forever." O'Connor's first home, in mid 18th-century Ireland, is a "house built like a fortress," its walls 2 feet thick. His last, in the 21st century, is a duplex on Duane Street in downtown Manhattan. It is filled with books, paintings and African masks. But Cormac and Hamill have more in common than apartments. Both are newspapermen, both Irish, both paint and both have sworn off alcohol Hamill, after an addiction he searingly documented in his memoir, "A Drinking Life."

Fiction
ISBN: 0316341118 Read an Excerpt
Humans have dreamed of eternal life since the beginning of time. From Ponce de Leon's search for the Fountain of Youth to the latest breakthroughs of science and medicine, people have sought to extend life. Imagine if - instead of being haunted by the knowledge of your own death - you had the gift of forever? Would it be a blessing or a curse?
Cormac Samuel O'Connor, a poor, yet proud Irish immigrant, finds out in this glorious, ambitious, hugely entertaining novel by Pete Hamill, who for the past 40 years has been one of America's leading journalists.
Cormac grows up with his loving parents in Northern Ireland. When the British Earl of Warren, a slave trader, murders his father, Cormac must avenge his death. He follows the earl to colonial New York, arriving in 1740. On the voyage over, he befriends an African babalawo, or shaman, who is in bondage. Once in New York, Cormac finds that Africans are being sold into slavery at Wall Street. Also auctioned off as indentured servants are Irish immigrants, forced to work in slave-like conditions to pay off their passage to the New World.
What's forever in this book is the fight for justice. Cormac is soon not only on his personal quest, but involved in the New York slave uprising of 1741, a real event which resulted in the hanging of 18 Africans and four Irish. For this, he is rewarded with the gift of eternal life with one big provision - if he can leaves the island of Manhattan, he will die.

Two who fell
so we could see This one is for David Bloom and Michael Kelly, casualties of the war in Iraq. I didn't know either man, but each was part of the guild of which I'm a humble member. Each died while working for all of us. They were members of that brave band of reporters who go to bad places to send bulletins to the safe. Such men and women have one fundamental task: to tell us the difference between what is said by politicians and propagandists and what actually happens. They don't italicize the differences. They simply say: Here's what I saw. And so each day of the war we followed David Bloom, moving with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division as they dashed north together to Baghdad. When the soldiers slept, Bloom slept. What they ate, he ate. When there were incoming rounds, he was there, too. Any round of incoming ordnance could have killed him.

Little Brown, Back Bay. 613p. c2003. 0-316-73569-8. $14.95. SA Pete Hamill is well known for his ability to make New York history come alive and this work is no exception. Hamill pays particular attention to weaving into his narrative the prominent role African Americans have played in New York history. An interview with the author and a reading group guide can be found at the end of the book. Some sex and violence render this work more appropriate for senior high and public library collections. This is a wonderful addition to historical fiction or fantasy collections. Courtney Lewis, Libn., Wyoming Seminary Sch., Kingston, PA SRecommended for senior high school students.

why sinatra matters
29 September 2003 The title of Pete Hamill's Why Sinatra Matters promises something it doesn't really deliver. We hear that Frank Sinatra mattered immensely to himself, greatly to his mother, significantly to Italian-Americans, and transcendently to American music. The why of the first two matterings is trivial. The why of the third is obvious: like Fiorello LaGuardia or Joe DiMaggio, Sinatra showed that people from immigrant stock could be stars. The why of the fourth matter Sinatra's music is difficult to capture, and Hamill doesn't quite succeed here. There's no glamourous lifestyle here. Sinatra "abused his body in a way that was special to his generation of American men; that he had survived until eighty-two was itself a kind of triumph over the odds." Hamill presents Sinatra as "a good father and a poor husband," and minces no words over the abusiveness (on both sides) of his relationship with Ava Gardner. Nor does Hamill wax admiring over Sinatra's acting career. The filmography in the back of his book lists only those pictures "that remain worth seeing," and there are only a dozen of those. But that leaves the music, and Hamill knows that that matters: "his work will endure as long as men and women can hear, and ponder, and feel." That's a pretty safe description of the recordings that Sinatra made with Nelson Riddle at Capitol in the 1950s, where Hamill (and most critics) would locate the core of his achievement.
