The Program in Film/Video Studies at the University of Michigan is fortunate to have its own departmental library, The Donald Hall Collection. Thanks to a generous gift by Robert Shaye , President and CEO of New Line Cinema and an alumnus of the University of Michigan (BBA ’60), the library’s primary mission is to support screenwriting. Upon presenting the gift, Mr. Shaye noted: "There is no school in the country really focusing on producing great screenwriting. I thought the program could distinguish itself by focusing on one aspect of the film industry and doing it well! Michigan has a tradition of honoring quality writing and his is just another part of it.” The DHC is named for the renowned poet and author, Donald Hall , who taught at Michigan from 1957 to 1975 and it honors the noted professor who greatly influenced Mr. Shaye during his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan. The library contains thousands of screenplays, dvds, videotapes and laserdiscs. In addition, viewing stations are available for patrons who wish to screen films for academic assignments or personal pleasure.

Chapter 2: Donald Knuth: Leonard Euler of Computer Science
version 0.60 beta
"Computer programming is an art form,
like the creation of poetry or music"
Donald E. Knuth[1974] Contents Let me make it clear from the beginning: I really admire this man. Donald E. Knuth is not only Professor Emeritus of The Art of Computer Programming at Stanford University, the author of the multi-volume work-in-progress The Art of Computer Programming , five volumes of , a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Engineering and so on and so forth. Unlike many other bearers of a similar number of prestigious titles and published books, he is a unique lonely star among computer science researchers. I would say he is man of a stature similar to the stature of Leonard Euler in mathematics. Such men are not born every century... Despite opinion of some overzealous free/open software evangelists, free software always existed and the current free.open software is largely based on what has come before it. Professor Donald Knuth is one of the largest contributors to this pool of knowledge. Moreover, free and open programs are only as good as algorithms they are using. And dismissing his contributions to free software movement as irrelevant like "professional software freedom fighter" Richard Stallman once did (see

I thought this book was the best when I was a kid, and I still love it! It is one of the cutest books I have ever read! I am now in the 8th grade, and I used this book for a speech competition with my friend. We got a superior (not to brag or anything). This book is probabally for kids from ages 5-8.

Above the River: The Complete Poems

I hate to give this work anything less than 5-stars, because at the moment (and probably most future moments) I revere James Wright's poetry. He makes blue collar blackened river Ohio come alive riven death with darkness and life. So this book is a must for poetry lovers.Where it distracts me is the attempts at completeness is a difficult editor's dilemma and one that doesn't serve the poet or the poet's reader well here. Philip Larkin 1922-1985
by Donald Hall U Times Literary Supplement almost a decade ago. It begins: I work all day, and get half drunk at night.
Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.
In time the curtain-edges will grow light.
Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,
Making all thought impossible but how
And where and when I shall myself die.
The Less Deceived announced Philip Larkin in 1955. As a young man he had published The North Ship , poems lyrical and Yeatsian and not yet Larkinesque. The early work resembled other young Englishmen: neo-Romantic, even a bit wet Lucky Jim The Less Deceived was a small-press book—published by George Hartley who ran the Marvell Press and edited Listen , the best literary magazine in its time—it was published with a list of subscribers which included almost all English poets under forty: Amis, Bergonzi, Boyars, Brownjohn, Conquest, Davie, Enright, Hamburger, Hill, Jennings, MacBeth, Murphy, Thwaite, Tomlinson, Wain. (Thom Gunn was in California; Ted Hughes was not yet Ted Hughes.) And there were dons: Bateson, Dobree, Dodsworth, Fraser, Kermode, Leishmann. It was not long before Larkin became a popular poet in England, second only to Betjeman in public affection. When a good poet becomes popular there is always some silly reason as well as recognition of excellence. Dylan Thomas became a bestseller in this country—surely the obscurest poet ever to sell ten thousand copies—because tales of drunkenness and irreverence sold copies. With Robert Frost, the carefully cultivated rural manner—gussied up by the Luce publications until he resembled Scattergood Baines—sold copies and had little to do with the real man.

October 3-6, 1988 Donald Hall Donald Hall is not only one of our most prolific writers (six new books in 1987 alone, two more so far in 1988), but is perhaps the leading American "person of letters." He is the author of ten books of poetry, beginning with Exiles and Marriages (winner of the Lamont Prize in 1955) and including Kicking the Leaves (1978) and most recently The Happy Man , which won the Lenore Marshall/The Nation Award as best book of poems for 1986; The Bone Ring , a play in verse (1987); and The One Day , a poem in three parts (1988). His sixteen books of prose cover a wide range of subjects: String Too Short To Be Saved is about growing up on—and saying what he thought then was a final farewell to—his grandparents' subsistence farm in New Hampshire (1961); Seasons at Eagle Pond is about living now on that same farm (1987); Remembering Poets contains his reminiscences about T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Dylan Thomas and Robert Frost (1978);

The Painted Bed by Donald Hall
by Tim Walker
I can tell you something about how long Donald Hall has been a player on the poetry scene by revealing that he was the inaugural poetry editor of The Paris Review , which turns 50 this year. Hall taught for many years at the University of Michigan before moving back to his grandparents' old farmstead in New Hampshire, where he's now lived for decades, cranking out poem after poem, essay after essay, and book after book. From my experience, Hall is uniformly solid as both a poet and prose writer. (Of all his writing, I probably like his memoirs such as Life Work best.) While I don't like every single line he's ever written, he is, as a writer, along the lines of Robert Duvall as an actor: clearly very good, and incapable of doing a piece badly. Michael Keaton once said that Robert Duvall is one of his most admired actors because (as I recall his words) "there's a level below which he does not go." Donald Hall may not be quite as good as Robert Duvall, but it's close. Hall's second wife was the (much younger) poet Jane Kenyon. In 1995, Kenyon died of cancer at age 47, and the travails of her illness and death form the subject of Hall's 1998 collection
