Alex Haley
Journalist, writer; born in Ithaca, N.Y. He grew up in Henning, Tenn., studied at Elizabeth City (N.C.) Teachers' College (1937-39), and became a journalist while serving in the U.S. Coast Guard (1939-59). Retiring from the service, he established himself in Los Angeles as a free-lance writer, distinguished by his Playboy interviews. He first gained some national attention as the collaborator-editor of The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965). His highly acclaimed work, Roots: The Saga of an American Family (1976, Pulitzer Prize) turned out to be a mixture of fact and fiction but was definitely based on his African-American roots; he had spent 12 years researching his ancestry and claimed to trace it to a Kunte Kinte, brought as a slave to America from Gambia in 1767. The book was the basis of a phenomenally successful television miniseries (1977), for which he received a special Pulitzer Prize and the Spingarn Medal. A sequel, Queen (1993), also appeared as a book and television miniseries.

In it Haley traced his ancestry back to Africa and covered seven American generations, starting from his ancestor, Kunta Kinte. The book was adapted to television series, and woke up an interest in genealogy, particularly among African-Americans. Haley himself commented that the book was not so much history as a study of mythmaking: "What Roots gets at in whatever form, is that it touches the pulse of how alike we human beings are when you get down to the bottom, beneath these man-imposed differences." He said that three groups of people lived in every village. First were those you could see - walking around, eating, sleeping, and working. Second were the ancestors, whom Grandma Yaisa had now joined.
"And the third people - who are they?" asked Kunta.
"The third people," said Omoro, "are those waiting to be born."

    Alex Haley
Journalist, Novelist The author of the widely acclaimed novel Roots was born in Ithaca, New York on August 11, 1921, and reared in Henning, Tennessee. The oldest of three sons of a college professor father and a mother who taught grade school, Haley graduated from high school at fifteen and attended college for two years before enlisting in the United States Coast Guard as a messboy in 1939. A voracious reader, Haley began writing short stories while working at sea, but it took eight years before small magazines began accepting some of his stories. By 1952, the Coast Guard had created a new rating for Haley, chief journalist, and he began handling United States Coast Guard public relations. In 1959, after 20 years of military service, he retired from the Coast Guard and launched a new career as a freelance writer. He eventually became an assignment writer for Reader's Digest and moved on to Playboy where he initiated the "Playboy Interviews" feature.

Haley The Master Storyteller Whose `Roots' Ran Very Deep
    By Jacqueline Trescott
The Washington Post Washington One morning last week Alex Haley stood at a government-issue lectern in an ordinary hearing room in downtown Washington and once again made you feel like you were right on the front porch in Henning, Tenn. In a deep, velvety voice Haley told the story of Queen Haley, his paternal grandmother, and described her in such lush physical and emotional detail that, once again, a Haley became part of your family. It was your grandmother dipping snuff, swatting and spitting at the lightning bugs, rocking in the pine chair and talking about old times. And, as Haley listed his various projects a miniseries on Queen, a series of interviews with black filmmakers, the long-awaited story of Henning once again you knew something of magnitude was brewing. "Queen was born near Florence, Alabama, on a plantation called the Forks of Cypress," he said. "Her father was the master and her mother a mulatto weaver. She was raised as the servant of her half-sisters. She was what they called `a child of the plantation.' " After the Civil War, Queen was freed and was chased into a forest. "There she joined three couples, and this was the first time she had ever confronted what being black was. I just can't wait to write that scene." Haley, who died early Monday in Seattle, where he had been scheduled to speak, pulled us into the drawing rooms of living history and created characters that became part of the American lexicon.

Managing Editor The Coast Guard has fulfilled a promise made two years ago to name a cutter after its first chief journalist, the late Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alex Haley. The former Navy salvage and rescue ship Edenton (ATS 1) has been converted into a 282-foot medium-endurance cutter and commissioned in the Coast Guard as the USCGC Alex Haley (WMEC 39). The new cutter is believed to be the first U.S. military ship named for a journalist. Haley, famed for his best-selling book Roots , served in the Coast Guard for 20 years, beginning in 1939 as a steward and retiring in 1959 as a chief journalist. Haley, who started writing as a hobby, was valued by his shipmates for his talent in "ghostwriting" love letters for them. His writing talent was recognized with an assignment to the Coast Guard's public affairs office in New York. After retiring from the Coast Guard, Haley continued his writing career and also worked to promote literacy and education. He died in 1992. Secretary of Transportation Rodney E. Slater was the keynote speaker at the 10 July commissioning ceremonies at the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, Md. Also in attendance were Sen. Paul Sarbanes (D-Md.), Coast Guard Commandant Adm. James M. Loy, Haley's first wife Nannie Haley, his oldest son William Haley, his daughter Lydia Haley, his sister Lois Butts Haley, his brother Julius Haley, and his daughter-in-law Doris Haley (whose husband, U.S. Ambassador to Gambia George Haley, was unable to attend).
