B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Sir Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) Prolific English writer, who published colorful novels set in unknown regions and lost kingdoms of Africa, or some other corner of the world: Iceland, Constantinople, Mexico, Ancient Egypt. Haggard's best-known work is the romantic adventure tale KING SOLOMON'S MINES (1885), which was inspired by Robert Louis Stevenson 's famous Treasure Island . Haggard also was an agricultural reformer and a faithful servant of the British Empire. However, his depiction of other cultures has been considered more complex than was common in contemporary popular romances. "Welcome, white men from the stars," he said; "this is a different sight from what your eyes gazed on by the light of last night's moon, but it is not so good a sight. Girls are pleasant, and were it not for such as these" (and he pointed round him) "we should none of us be here to- day; but men are better. Kisses and the tender words of women are sweet, but the sound of the clashing of men's spears, and the smell of men's blood, are sweeter far! Would ye have wives from among our people, white men? If so, choose the fairest here, and ye shall have them, as many as ye will;" and he paused for an answer.' (from King Solomon's Mines Henry Rider Haggard was born in West Bradenham Hall, Norfolk, as the eight son of William Haggard, a barrister and a country squire, and Ella (Doventon) Haggard, an amateur writer. In his childhood, the young Henry Rider was seen as the family dunce by his father. Haggard was not sent to a good public school like his brothers, but he was educated at a London day-school, although privately, and Ipswich Grammar School. After failing the army entrance, Haggard went in 1875 to Natal as a secretary to Sir Henry Bulwer, Governor of Natal colony. In 1877 he joined the staff of the special commissioner. Next year he became Master and Registrar of the High Court in the Transvaal. For the rest of his life Haggard viewed with understanding the British colonial policy, sharing in this the attitudes of his friend

Review of haggard's first novel, Dawn.

Turning the Spotlight on
H. Rider Haggard
Dawn Appropriately titled Dawn , this almost forgotten novel marks Haggard's first and by no means timid venture into fiction. Published at the age of 27, it was followed by over fifty books of extravagant adventure set in almost every conceivable time and place, involving fabulous lost cities, princely Zulu warriors, reincarnated lovers, intrepid explorers, cruel savages, implacable fate, witchcraft, mysticism, intrigue, treachery, heroic battles and brave derring-do. In his day, before cinema and television inured the public to facile spectacular effects, Haggard's sensational tales were eagerly awaited by a host of delighted fans and many still possess potent powers of fascination for modern readers: King Solomon's Mines, She, Eric Brighteyes, Nada the Lily, The People of the Mist, The World's Desire , to mention just a few. Placed in this heady context, Dawn Dawn of enduring interest to Haggard scholars. But it is best to look at the novel itself without undue reference to the prolific output it heralded. Philip's strict father is anxious for a match with the Lee heiress, who is "pretty enough for a wife," and Philip has long been half-engaged to this old childhood friend of his, who is deeply in love with him. He listlessly carries on the courtship, binding Maria to a secret betrothal, but then convinces the haughty Hilda (who disdainfully refuses to become his mistress) to a clandestine marriage in London. But having his cake and eating it too proves far beyond Philip's cunning. The situation is brought to a headthanks to some anonymous letters from George when old Mr. Caresfoot publicly announces the Lee match and an indignant, very pregnant Hilda arrives from London to ascertain the truth about her husband's conduct. In the ensuing climax to this first section of

actual en masse to Israel) Lost World must linger. If the novels were read as escapist fantasies, there was nevertheless a tension of credibility for Victorians that in the 20th Century was whittled away by cartographers. Biblical Archeology Through the '60s/70s, an amazing fraud was perpetuated, convincing a gullible National Geographic Society that a Stone Age tribe flourished in a Philippine jungle, marriages arranged with similar, unmet primitive groups awaiting interviews deeper in the rain forest. To recall the television special on this tribe decades afterward, one can only wonder how so many were duped. The naked, cultureless "gentle Tassidy," just like Lost in Space National Geographic editors dropped the matter quietly, knowing the public desired Lost Horizon sequel entitled Return to Shangri-la. So the theme survives, though not as broadly explored as formerly. Yet with a handful of exceptions, most of those among my chums who are avidly pursuing lost race novels are Seniors who remember when they (or at least their parents who assisted in formulating life-long tastes) regarded these books as contemporary, lending an immediate nostalgic power not as easily felt by young collectors. Belated Reviews #26: H. Rider Haggard
Categories change. If Sir Henry Rider Haggard were writing today, some of his books would be marketed as fantasy, others as thrillers, or historical fiction. My own copies of his books are divided about evenly between those reprinted (and shelved) as mainstream novels and those reprinted as fantasy. Haggard wrote adventure fiction. At a time when the unexplored portions of the map were rapidly being filled in, he was populating the remaining mystery areas with the remnants of lost civilizations and lost continents, with ancient lovers chasing each other from incarnation to incarnation, ancient magics and ancient curses. And he was doing this in the 1880s (as well as for the four decades that followed), which is to say that he was *originating* many of these now-common devices. Haggard's books display the paradoxical attractions of the best genre classics: They retain much of their power, wonder, and freshness, but they also have to be appreciated as period pieces which could not have been published had they been written today. Too many conventions have changed. Fair enough: Those are the terms upon which we can appreciate Verne and Wells and Kipling, too. Like their books, those of Henry Rider Haggard can be enjoyed as long as the reader doesn't insist on thinking less of the author for not being born a century later. In Haggard's world, as in Kipling's, nobility, courage, and honor were not the property of any one race but God was definitely English.

Sir Henry Rider Haggard is best known for his African adventure novels, notably King Solomon's Mines and She. Born in England, his parents ended his education at age 17 (because he was a daydreamer) and placed him in the service of the Natal, South African lieutenant-governor. He returned to England in 1881 and became a barrister although writing was his main passion. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1919.
