41. JESSICA HAGEDORN Interview For The NY Times By Don Shewey

JESSICA HAGEDORN
When the writer Jessica Hagedorn was first approached by director Michael Greif about adapting her novel Dogeaters for the stage, she was dubious. “I could see it as a film, but for the stage? It’s so big and busy and dense,” Hagedorn recalled recently.
Those are all accurate words to describe the novel, which was nominated for a National Book Award when it came out in 1990. A sprawling pastiche about contemporary life in the Philippines, Dogeaters bounces between two different narratives: the 1950s adolescence of Rio Gonzaga, a movie-obsessed girl from an extended upper-middle-class family, and the scrappy existence of Joey Sands, a poor young half-black male prostitute who witnesses in 1982 the assassination of a popular politician (a character not unlike Benigno Aquino). These stories are intertwined with snippets of recent Filipino history refracted through radio melodramas, news reports, and the Hollywood dreams that equally infect waiters, porn stars, generals, and beauty queens, including First Lady Imelda Marcos herself. The result is a portrait of Filipino life as a turbulent, exuberantly tacky post-colonial soap opera unraveling in the shadow of the superpowers.
The challenges of turning the book into a play did not deter Greif. “I thought the novel told a great story,” he said in a telephone interview, “and the effect of the world of entertainment on this culture was so fascinating and alive and inherently theatrical.” He not only commissioned Hagedorn to write the play but has shepherded it from its 1998 world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in California, where Greif was artistic director at the time, through a series of developmental workshops to a full production at the Joseph Papp Public Theater, where it opens tonight.

Born in the Santa Mesa section of Manila in 1949, Jessica Hagedorn traces her early inspiration to a mother devoted to painting and a maternal grandfather who was an accomplished writer and political cartoonist. Situated within a colonial heritage of Catholic schooling and U.S. cultural hegemony, Hagedorn found herself drawn to Hollywood movies and Western literary classics—but equally to melodramas and radio serials in Tagalog. This predilection for crossing boundaries defines Hagedorn’s cultural productions, which include poetry and fiction, theater pieces and performance art, and music and screenplays.
Moving to San Francisco at the age of fourteen proved pivotal in shaping Hagedorn’s consciousness. Although eventually attending the American Conservatory Theater, Hagedorn attributes a substantial part of her artistic development to her early exposure to San Francisco’s social and literary scene. The family’s frequent moves through diverse neighborhoods contributed, along with her unimpeded appetite for browsing bookstores, to her sense of multiculturalism. She cites Bienvenido Santos, Amiri Baraka, Ishmael Reed, Jayne Cortez, and Víctor Hernández Cruz, as well as Gabriel García Márquez, Manuel Puig, and Stéphane Mallarmé, as among her literary influences. No less vital was her participation in San Francisco’s Kearny Street Writers’ Workshop, which introduced her to Asian American history and literature and helped infuse her with the spirit, passion, and social commitment of the late 1960s.

Charlie Chan Is Dead: An Anthology of Contemporary Asian American Fiction

Lol, it's ridiculous, Moto and Charlie Chan are degrading depictions of Asians...pure and simple; it's racist. Anybody who says otherwise is trully ignorant on the subject (i.e. the previous reviewer..no wonder he/she kept him/herself anonymous). Anyway, I liked the book, but I wouldn't say it's the bible for Asian American literature. Why? Well, some of the authors featured here in are not representive of Asian American literature (i.e. Elaine Kim, Maxine Hong Kingston, and Amy Tan). There's...

This was one of the best collections of poetry I have ever read. Though my critique may be somewhat tainted by the fact that I had dinner with her when she came to SF, I feel that the person who wrote those tales in the book-was the same sensitive person and talented artist I met and enjoyed the company of. As a young aspiring writer myself, Jessica gave me a confidence that I too can pursue my dreams, even if I never become famous for it. I told her that there are a lot of things that make m...

Born:
Birthplace:
Manila, Philippines
A novelist, poet, and performance artist, Hagedorn emigrated from the Philippines when she was 14 years old. She was encouraged in her writing by poet and translator Kenneth Rexroth, who edited her first book of poems, Four Young Women (1973). Hagedorn came to national attention with the publication of her novel Dogeaters (1990), which was nominated for the National Book Award. Dogeaters is a phantasmagorical saga of the Philippines during the 1970s, at the height of the Marcos regime. Three years later, she edited an influential anthology of Asian American literature called Charlie Chan is Dead: An Anthology of Contemporary Asian American Fiction (1993). For 10 years she was the lead singer of the Gangster Choir band, which became the basis for her novel, The Gangster of Love (1996). Hagedorn added playwright to her accomplishments with the stage adaptation of her novel Dogeaters at the New York's Public Theater in 2001.
