Writer and broadcaster Peter Gzowski, with his daily broadcast of personal essays, interviews, debate, music and drama, is the contemporary embodiment of what Canada's pioneer radio-makers dreamed of when they launched national broadcasting. First with the 1970s' free-wheeling This Country in the Morning , and today with CBC Radio's Morningside , he attracts over a million listeners to his three-hour programme. He is their linchpin and connection to all aspects of Canadian life. His deft and incisive interviewing, masked by an intimate and relaxed style, "shows Canadians to themselves," revealing not only the great issues of the day but the small pockets and corners of Canadiana which make up the fabric of the country. His assumption of the intelligence of his listeners is echoed in the hundreds of individual responses he receives. His talent can't be bottled and sold, but his example has been the inspiration for a whole generation of broadcasters. He also works tirelessly for literacy in Canada, and has raised millions of dollars for the cause through his ongoing series of golf tournaments. News Varsity mourns the death of Peter Gzowski Published: Thursday, January 31, 2002 Broadcasting legend and past Varsity editor-in-chief Peter Gzowski died last week. You won't see Peter Gzowski's face on one of those U of T banners. That's because although he attended the school in the early '50s, he never graduated. Back then, he might have been too busy writing and editing for the Varsity to attend lectures. In 1956, Gzowski was editor-in-chief of the Varsity. Of course, later he was too busy defining Canadian culture at the CBC and elsewhere to bother returning. Gzowski passed away January 24 in Toronto. The ways in which he distinguished himself as a journalist—as author, reporter and broadcaster—are truly gargantuan in proportion. He is and has been a role model for Varsity staff members past and present. We are proud to count him among our numbers and we mourn his passing. Gzowski died at the same time as the 64th annual Canadian University Press national journalism conference, a gathering of 60 student newspapers. In his honour, we renamed our decision-making body the Peter Gzowski Memorial Plenary. The Varsity will publish a feature on Peter Gzowski in the February 4 edition. In memory of Peter Gzowski, we are also reprinting his first editorial as editor-in-chief in 1956.

It’s called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and the incurable combination of emphysema and bronchitis is the fifth leading killer of Canadians. “C.O.P.D. can be a stealth disease, as I happen to know,” testified Peter Gzowksi in a recording he made before his death. “Before I got my diagnosis, we didn’t know a heck of a lot about it.” But one thing they know for sure is that 90% of all cases are caused by tobacco use. “Most people will survive 10 or 15 years,” said Dr. Roger Goldstein, a respirologist at the West Park Healthcare Centre. But their quality of life is pretty poor, he said. “They are breathless.” The best thing people can do is quit smoking. “(Diagnosis) is a great motivator. I stopped immediately,” said Anne McKeown, who, as statistics predict, is harder hit by the health effects of smoking because of her gender.
