    Wowee Gzowski!
    By Paul Galpern
What an insult that Canadian icon Peter Gzowski should choose Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to broadcast his last of over 2000 radio shows. A new biographical documentary to be aired this Sunday on CBC Television's Life and Times reveals Gzowski chose this small prairie town to broadcast the last Morning-side because it was where his career began, in earnest. There, he was editor of the Moose Jaw Times-Herald. But before that, he was the Varsity's editor. What about us, Mr. Gzowski? This is where you began. A devoted hack at our campus paper, a young Peter in the early 1950s "lived by the printed word." It is no wonder his face is absent among the banners now flying across campus-Gzowski never graduated from the university. There was no time for study, as he divided his time between the Varsity and covering the police beat for two Toronto dailies. Despite an all-too-brief glimpse at Gzowski's Varsity years, there is not much to celebrate in this one-dimensional documentary. We get the smiling happy childhood, small-town images, some suspense at his parents' divorce, an account of his schooldays, more small-town images and the ups-and-downs of his career in journalism. There are some embarrassing moments from his flop late-night TV show in the mid-1970s, and a suggestion that Canada's hero was a neglectful father. But in the balance, Gzowski gets a whitewash. While he may deserve all this, the documentary fails in one important aspect. It pays no homage to what was certainly Gzowski's most profound achievement. Gzowski helped craft and define a Canadian identity-not a patriotic flag-waving vision of Canada, but a subtle sense of community, and commonality of experience. In his 15 years on CBC Radio's Morningside, he interviewed Canadians of many faces, cultures and convictions, and by virtue of their appearance on his show, they became part of the common Canadian experience.

The Game of Our Lives by Peter Gzowski Over the course of the 1980-81 NHL hockey season, Canadian broadcaster and author Peter Gzowski traveled and lived with the Edmonton Oilers hockey club. The Game of Our Lives represents his "memoir" of the season, accompanied by his observations and reminiscences on hockey in general. Gzowski picked a good season, and a good team, for this type of work; the Oilers were the youngest team in the League, possessed a player (Wayne Gretzky) who was to become the greatest in the history of the game, and that season defeated the hallowed Montreal Canadiens in the playoffs. Gzowski does an effective job of tracing the course of the Oilers' season, from its inauspicious beginnings to the tremendous finale. He discusses the "off-ice" aspects of a hockey player's life on the road and at home, and on occasion devotes several pages to discussing some the game's great players. However, what really makes the book more than simply another exercise in sports writing (a field that is not Gzowski's primary one, by the way) is his analysis of hockey as a vital Canadian cultural phenomenon. On page 83, remembering his youth in Galt, Ontario, he writes "[Hockey stars] belonged to us, as no other kind of hero ever could, at once more celebrated and more approachable because of what we shared. They were

For 20 years, the morning voice of Canada was a gruff, smoke-tainted baritone. Peter Gzowski was the award-winning host of CBC Radio's MORNINGSIDE , a programme Maclean’s magazine dubbed “ the best and most Canadian thing in Canadian broadcasting, radio or television.” But Peter Gzowski has also been a reporter, a Peabody award winner, a magazine editor, a television host and is an author and the most famous fundraiser for literacy this country has ever produced. Born the great great grandson of a Polish noble, Sir Casimir Gzowski, Peter Gzowski grew up in Cambridge (formerly Galt), Ontario. Candid snapshots reveal a happy child despite his parents’ early divorce. He talks about his early life and the close relationship he had with his mother, who died when he was only 14 years old and attending Ridley College boarding school. His father was an alcoholic who weaved in and out of his life. Bitten by the journalism bug while still in his teens, Gzowski rose from the small-town sheets of

    Chapter Ten
By vocation, Dick Hatfield is a guidance cousellor in the high school at Laurel, Montana, some one hundred miles north of Livingston, but by avocation he is a man of what he calls "a hundred different things." He is a mountain man. He is interested in survival, and he gives courses that teach, among other things, how to start a fire with a piece of ice (you shape it with the warmth of your hands into a magnifying lens). He carves belt buckles out of elk horn, and sometimes when he runs out of antler material he consults his friend Clyde Praye. A distinguised-looking sixty-five year old, Praye, who looks a bit like Arthur Fiedler in small-town clothes, makes most of his lving by the practice of reflexology, the comforting and treatment of bodily disorders by manipulation of the feet. Clyde Praye is also a dowser. To most people outside the field, dowsers are people who use forked sticks to find water. To its practitioners and followers, dowsing is much more sophisticated and useful. It can be applied to everything from metallurgy to medicine.
Clyde is married to the widow of one of America's pre-eminent dowsers, and he himself, by allowing the forces of nature to move various instruments in his hands, has beena ble to perform a number of remarkable feats; he has diagnosed pregnancy, predictd birthdays and found missing objects by hanging his favorite device, a pendulum suspended from a string, over maps. That's how he could tell Dick Hatfield where to look for elk antlers.

"At the Galt Collegiate, there was a wonderful man named Frank Ferguson," says Peter Gzowski. "He had a huge impact on me and hundreds and hundreds, maybe thousands of other kids. "Mr. Ferguson, as I called him all his life, had a great gift of illumination. He so obviously loved the works he taught that you would put your own natural aversion to Shakespeare aside and say, ‘If he can get this enthusiastic it must be something.’" Gzowski calls Ferguson the Mister Chips of the GCI: "People liked him. He had a wonderful, joyful air." Ferguson did something unusual for a teacher – he was a CCF candidate. Gzowski remembers that this shocked a number of people, including his stepfather, who thought these "radical socialists" shouldn’t be allowed in the school. Ferguson’s political activism didn’t come up in the classroom. "He just talked about the writers we were studying," Gzowski reports.
