Peter Gzowski: the man who made it happen
"In a country forever in search of its own voice,
Mr. Gzowski is a stand-in for Canada, as curious as he is courteous, interested in hockey heroes and indigenous customs and all the forgotten chapters of a national history and culture that he constantly challenges his listeners to cherish and defend." - The New York Times
When news came of Peter Gzowski's death in early 2002, the tributes poured in. For days, journalists, broadcasters, politicians and ordinary Canadians shared their memories of this exceptional man who had become, during his long career as a broadcaster, the best and truest voice of Canada. They remembered his wonderful interviews that made listeners feel as if they were eavesdropping on intimate conversations between two friends. They remembered Peter's passion for Canada's geographical and ethnic diversity and his charming personality. They remembered his hard work on behalf of literacy, and his strong advocacy for the disenfranchised. They remembered his gravelly voice and deep, warm chuckle.

Photo by: Russell Monk One of Canada's most respected public figures, Peter Gzowski has distinguished himself through personal intergrity and professional excellence during his celebrated career. He is perhaps best known for his 15 seasons of hosting CBC Radio's Morningside, during which he has become a household name in Canada with his insightful and sincere approach to broadcasting. More than an eminent broadcaster and author, Peter is a Canadian cultural icon who is admired and trusted by millions. Since 1986, he has raised over $5 million for community based literacy organizations through his Golf Tournaments for Literacy. They have been played in every province and territory, and feature poetry, readings, and live music. It is to his further credit that proceeds from the sale of High Flight will support Canada's Frontier College in its ongoing work for literacy. All Canadians, particularly those in the Air Force community, may rightly appreciate his warm recitation of Magee's precious verse. http://www.PipeBand.CFBTrenton.com

An Island Footnote
Much has been written and said about writer and broadcaster Peter Gzowski in the days following his death on the afternoon of Thursday, January 25. He was treasured by his family, friends and colleagues and loved by faithful listeners to his morning radio shows This Country in the Morning and Morningside Peter was at heart a writer. His editor, Douglas Gibson, recalls that often an attractive young woman would approach Peter, make admiring remarks to his delight then bring him abruptly to earth by saying that her mother was his biggest fan. There seem to have been thousands of these mothers and other biggest fans in every corner of Canada. On CBC radio Peter found his audience. His warm, witty and intelligent broadcasts had great ratings over a million listeners, numbers unique in CBC regular program history. There is an island footnote to Peter Gzowski's remarkable story: On an early spring day In 1964, he tagged along with his oldest son, Pete Jr. and Pete's pal, Dave Amer Jr. on a family trip to Ward's Island. The kids met and played together on Washington Avenue where the Gzowskis lived and where David Sr.and I rented an apartment that winter. It was May, time to say goodbye to our island tenant and reclaim our house at 36 Lakeshore. On that little outing, Pete Sr. got a crush on the island, so he and Jenny bought their own cottage, with a crooked floor, at 8 Second Street. (Peter's younger daughter Maria, her husband Scott Zufelt and their daughters Stephanie and Samantha continue to live in the now-renovated house.)

DIDN'T GET IT THE FIRST TIME AROUND? NOTE: The following copy isn't going to change ... Only the titles at the end of the copy will change from month to month. Gamblers Book Shop maintains a used and out-of-print library. It contains hundreds of titles on various subjects (gaming topics, of course), and because the list is ever-changing, it's tough keep a viable, timely record of what we have. (We're working on it, but not full time, so don't expect to see the list any time soon.) But, if you are looking for something that's no longer available, just let us know. If we don't have what you want, we'll put your name and address on a waiting list which we check against stock every couple of weeks and when your request arrives, we'll notify you. Some books are in great demand; others hang around the store until they begin to look as old as gaming itself. We try to get the best quality used books possible, but sometimes we have to take what we can get. In any case, we'll let you know the condition of the book when we notify you of its availability. Now for the interesting part: Here are some of the titles we have (in duplicate or triplicate) right now: If you see something you've been waiting for, use the normal channels (e-mail, fax, phone, or mail) to order. Or, if you want us to search our collection for a particular book, go to the end of the page and let us know the title and author via e-mail

Join Our Newsletter Following Peter Gzowski’s death last week, CBC radio and television seemed to go All Gzowski all the time. Many people who had either worked with him or been interviewed with him were asked to tell the rest of us what Peter had really been like. But, through it all, and I may have missed it, I didn’t hear anyone mention Gzowski’s competitive spirit. So, I was pleased to see a lengthy piece in The Globe and Mail by Harry Bruce who had been a colleague of Gzowski’s at Maclean’s, a neighbour and friend. The article focussed on Gzowski’s insatiable drive to be the best at whatever he was doing. “His competitiveness was so intense it verged on being offensive. Winning at soccer and tennis near our dusty and beloved homes on Ward’s Island, at shooting baskets for money, at liar’s poker, at handball, at golf, snooker, chess, Chinese checkers, Clue, Monopoly, poker, bridge and at games you’ve never heard of, Peter fought like fury to win. You could smell the ambition on him. It was part of him, like the way he’d walk off the makeshift volleyball court on the island after a pick-up game had been poor and boring with his head down and some kind of disapproval of the whole evening air trailing behind him,” Bruce wrote. I had actually witnessed that myself through the very slight connection I had with Gzowski, a person who had once been my baby sitter - David Amer. As a young man, I was a visitor at the Amer’s cottage and had seen Peter leaving the court dejectedly, exactly as Harry Bruce described it.

Then my co-worker who was riding with me to work informed me that Peter had died. It was nice to hear such a joyful wake on the public radio. This is how mourning should take place. We used to get fine reception of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Inuktitut service here on 9625 kHz I think, but it was discontinued as I think Canadian policy is to remove all good radio from the airwaves, especially if people listen to it. No doubt all Inuit homes now have cable and McDonalds hamburgers now, but many in Britain liked that overshooting shortwave station. Be that as it may I recall a name Peter Gzowski and the name Morningside also springs to mind. Are we talking CBC man who also is a songwriter for Bob Dylan or is the name Peter in Canada, there may be several different people under the same name rather like David Davies or John Jones in Wales? Peter Gzowski did not broadcast in Inuktitut as I recall, anything from him was in English. Don't think he wrote any Inuktitut songs either. Does this make any sense to anyone? Thought not, just a coincidence.
