Obituary: Thom Gunn, 74, expatriate poet Wolfgang Saxon The New York Times
Thursday, April 29, 2004 Thom Gunn, a transplanted British poet identified with the San Francisco scene and the California liberated style, died on Sunday night at his home in San Francisco, his adopted hometown. He was 74.
His death was announced by his companion of 52 years, Mike Kitay.
Acclaimed as one of the most promising young poets of postwar Britain, Gunn found his own voice after he migrated to California in the 1950s and established himself in San Francisco.
There, he wedded traditional form to unorthodox themes like LSD, panhandling and homosexuality. He experimented with free verse and syllabic stanzas. In doing so he evolved from British tradition and European existentialism to embrace the relaxed ways of the California counterculture.
He was grouped as a young man at Cambridge in the 1950s with a generation of writers, notably Philip Larkin, known as the Movement. By the time his best-known early collection, "My Sad Captain," appeared in 1961, Gunn had settled in America.

Thom Gunn is dead
velvetvandal: mage about town According to today's Indie, Thom Gunn died on April 27th.
This really, really depresses me.
And to make it worse, Hubert Selby Jr copped it today too.
And yet Jeffrey fucking Archer still walks the earth. Fuckery.
As you can see, I'm quite down about this.
If none of y'all have read Gunn, furnish yourself with a copy of his selected poems and start being amazed. The man was a genius, and the world (for me at least) seems like a smaller place without him. Stoatie (Male Student No. 23)
(prev. Stoatie Is A Punk Rocker Ah shit. Ex Not good. I have memories of trying to read this poem aloud to a friend and not being able to finish as the final verse makes me tearful.
(Linked rather than pasted, in case you're not in the mood for emoting.)
Topper whatever It is, that poem has it. a sad day, now that he's gone. sine You know, I recently met Lord Archer, and he was a great guy. Very warm, funny, quite bright. And, I hate to admit this almost, but I've actually enjoyed some his short stories... Does apologetic praise for someone else constitute threadrot. Prolly, eh?

Thom Gunn 1929-2004
Poet. Teacher. Mentor. My Sad Captains
by Thom Gunn One by one they appear in
the darkness: a few friends, and
a few with historical
names. How late they start to shine!
but before they fade they stand perfectly embodied, all the past lapping them like a cloak of chaos. They were men who, I thought, lived only to renew the wasteful force they spent with each hot convulsion. They remind me, distant now. True, they are not at rest yet, but now they are indeed apart, winnowed from failures, they withdraw to an orbit and turn with disinterested hard energy, like the stars. Thom (Thomson) William Gunn, poet, born August 29 1929; died April 25 2004....

Thom Gunn; British poet wrote of real life in California
May 6, 2004 LOS ANGELES Thom Gunn, the expatriate British poet who embraced the counterculture life in the Bay Area and used his experiences there as the basis for some of his most memorable works, died April 25, apparently of a heart attack, at his home in San Francisco. He was 74. ADVERTISEMENT From the early 1950s, when he moved to California, Mr. Gunn wrote about gritty subjects LSD, gay sex and, later, the AIDS epidemic as well as more conventional topics. City life, nature, Greek mythology, and family and friends were also themes. As a young poet associated with a British group known as the Movement, whose most notable member was Philip Larkin, Mr. Gunn was dedicated to realism in his poetry and wary of high-flown language. The 19th-century English novelist Thomas Hardy was among his literary influences. Hardy's sense of irony, his resistance to idealized characters, and his bleak outlook appealed to Mr. Gunn, critics noted. The writer was born Thomas William Gunn in Kent to journalist parents, who divorced when he was 9.
