GUNN, Thom. Fighting Terms. Oxford: Fantasy Press, 1954. Octavo, pp. [2], 44, [2]. Original yellow cloth, upper board lettered and tooled in red. Author's signature, dated 1954, in black ink to front free endpaper. Cloth extremities rubbed, light soiling, internally clean, without dust-jacket as issued. A very good plus copy. First edition, signed copy of the author's first substantial collection. One of an unspecified number from the first issue with uncorrected error on page 38 line 1, from a total edition of 305 copies only. Gunn wrote many of these poems during his second and third year at Trinity College, Cambridge. His rational tone and accomplished use of conventional forms have linked him with the Movement, a group of poets, including Kinglsey Amis, John Wain and Philip Larkin, reacting against the tangled neo-Romanticism of the New Apocalypse. Gunn's first poem was published in a 1951 issue of Cambridge Today. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Simon Finch Rare Books ; click here for further details.

Poet. Teacher. Mentor. My Sad Captains
by Thom Gunn One by one they appear in
the darkness: a few friends, and
a few with historical
names. How late they start to shine!
but before they fade they stand
perfectly embodied, all the past lapping them like a
cloak of chaos. They were men
who, I thought, lived only to
renew the wasteful force they
spent with each hot convulsion. They remind me, distant now. True, they are not at rest yet, but now they are indeed apart, winnowed from failures, they withdraw to an orbit and turn with disinterested hard energy, like the stars. Thom (Thomson) William Gunn, poet, born August 29 1929; died April 25 2004.... No. Wait. Do not go. A bracket of dates and life moves forward. If we were like the beasts that we keep that would be the whole of it. But we move forward carrying the past with us. It is true that age and the ever spiraling cascade of experience forces us to discard large files of memory along the way, but if we are wise we keep those memories that sustain us and let the rest pass. It is 1967 and I’m living with six other crazed young artists and hipsters in The Green House off Telegraph south of UC Berkeley. The Green House was not a special place for the time. It was, in that time and in that place, ordinary. The most ordinary place in the world. If it was neither real nor natural, it was fraught with a strange excitement, fecund with endless possibility. It was built of a metaphysic so loose that the most absurd accident could happen and it would only be a part of the Grand Design. It was a place where revelation and prophecy were daily events, the Second Coming scheduled for tomorrow after lunch, magic considered merely another, older branch of science, poetry an acceptable mode of speech, and caricature a widely appreciated attitude. As far as we know Rasputin, William Blake, St. Teresa, and Walt Whitman had never lived in The Green House, but they would have been welcome if they had wandered in.

Thom Gunn's contradictions
by Peter Campion
BOSS CUPID by Thom Gunn. Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 111 pages, $22. Thom Gunn is a poet known for his daring subject matter. In the mid '50s, after leaving his native England for the American West Coast, he composed strictly rhymed lyrics about Elvis Presley and biker gangs. In his 1972 book Moly , he wrote explicitly of experiences with LSD. In a volume 10 years later, Passages of Joy , he described the "sexual Jerusalem" of the gay scene in New York and San Francisco. But Gunn's poems have never fallen to mere sensationalism. Instead, by using unpredictable subjects that challenge his reader's assumptions and his own, he's raised the stakes of his artwork. How exciting it is, then, to see the poet push his reach and grasp even farther in Boss Cupid . Just as rhyme and meter alternate with free verse here, so gay porn stars share space with English aunts. If Gunn includes a long poem on King David, he places one on serial-killer Jeffrey Dahmer in the same section. And isn't this shiftiness just what the title of the book implies? When we admit that Mother Venus's sneaky son is in fact our boss, we begin to understand what Cambridge poet Tom Sleigh has admired in Gunn: "the ability to give up the self to change in others, to change in oneself and in the world." This process is Gunn's true subject matter, whatever person, incident, or time period his individual poems portray.

Magma
Thom Gunn
Cat island
Cats met us at the landing-place reclining in the sun to check us in with a momentary glance, concierges of a grassy island. (Attila's Throne, the Devil's Bridge, and "the best Byzantine church in the world", long saints admonitory on kiln-like inner walls.) And lunch in a shady court where cats now systematically worked the restaurant, table by table, gazing into eyes pleading "I'm hungry and I'm cute", reaching front paws up to knees and always getting before zeroing in on the next table, same routine, same result. Sensible bourgeois wild-cats working with the furred impudence of those who don't pretend to be other than whores, they give you not the semblance of love but simply a look at their beauty in return for food. Models, not escorts. They lack, too, the prostitute's self-pity, being beyond shame. And we lack what they have.

Thom Gunn
(Filed: 29/04/2004)
Thom Gunn, who died on Sunday aged 74, wrote some of the best and most elegant poetry of his times; his early work shows the influence of Donne and Herbert, and he never lost their tightness of thought and structure, although from the 1960s he also came under the influence of mescaline, lysergic acid and Allen Ginsberg. He found balanced metres and delicate rhyme schemes to produce poems about motorcyclists, truckers, a "cottaging" incident in a branch of McDonald's, drug-taking and Elvis Presley. A description of a heaving, orgiastic San Francisco "bathhouse" recalls Dante's Inferno not only in its content but also its terza rima. The poem appeared in Boss Cupid (2000), a volume that caused less controversy for this than for Troubadour, a sequence of madrigal-like songs written from the perspective of Jeffrey Dahmer, the serial murderer, cannibal and necrophile.
