Reflections on Work/Life
I was fortunate this summer to spend some time reviewing old business (and personal) files from the past 20 years. What a trip down memory lane and what an opportunity to reflect on the path work/life has taken and where it is today! It was fascinating to see how far the field of work/life (formerly employer supported child care, then work and family, then variations on work/life) has come. Twenty, even 10 years ago if you said you were in work and family, people would look at you quizzically or even suspiciously. Today everyone seems to know what we do. We have been more than legitimized – we are mainstream! I remember when we didn’t know where we "fit" in the organizational structure. We now have a domain, and like the other branches of human resources, e.g., compensation, benefits, learning and development, work/life directly affects and is affected by every other. It occurred to me that what work/life has brought to corporate America is a new awareness, a unique orientation, even a new morality about the workplace. It is built on a belief that while work is important to each individual and to the society as a whole, family is the bedrock of our lives and should come first – not just in words but in the actions of organizations. As work/life professionals, we made these concepts real – actually bringing child care programs and elder care services to the workplace and developing unique work processes that take into account employees’ personal responsibilities. The movement of organizations toward "valuing people" may have originated with our efforts; at the very least our work has bolstered this principle.

"I try," she writes, "in my acts of composition, to experience subjectivity and objectivity at their most frayed and fruitful and morally freighted juncture . . . I believe accurate representation of this juncture is possible, and that character is involved in approaching that border". This is electrifying, uncomfortable, daily work, undertaken on behalf of the human species, in fear for the fate of the earth: I am a frequency, current flies through. One has

It was the first time I've ever stay in a hotel room with no window, clock and radio. The hotel was a bit run-down. It was quite annoying when the reception rang me every morning to ask if I was checking out on that day (shouldn't they check the booking before asking the guest?).
The swimming pool and gym were again a bit run-down but considering the price, it was quite acceptable. I was indeed impressed by the aerobic classes ran every morning.

"Chef" Fireman Michael Hoose
Mike Hoose has worked for the Santa Barbara Fire Department for the past nine years. Although he lives in Buellton with his wife, Lisa, and daughter Ella (he has another child on the way this month!), he works here in the Mission Canyon District as an Engineer (drives the Fire Engine). Growing up, he watched Graham Kerr, who is best remembered as the Galloping Gourmet, one of TV cookery's most colorful and entertaining personalities. His show featured antics, jokes and a little bit of high calorie cooking and was very popular in the late 1960's and early 1970's. "I liked the way he could make cooking seem easy and fun," Mike says. His dad was another inspiration. He loved to cook for his family and was really into food and wine, traits that have obviously been passed on to Mike. "I really enjoy the wine country, especially Andrew Murray Wines," he says.
