And follow Cupid for his loaves and fishes? I, that did wear the ring her mother left,
I, with whose eyes her eyes committed theft, Must I lose ring, flowers, blush, theft, and go naked, Was it for this that I might Myra see Yet would she never write her love to me. 'Pleasing vices': Machiavelli and Greville on princely conduct
William R Drennan Notes and Queries . London: Dec 2000. Vol. 47, Iss. 4; pg. 468, 2 pgs
Abstract (Article Summary) While more contemporary scholars tend to qualify Fulke Greville's debt to Machiavelli, intriguing parallels between the two thinkers proliferate in Greville's writings. It is in his "Treatise of Monarchy" that Machiavelli's notion finds its most exact, if most world weary, Grevillean expression. Full Text (511 words)
CHARLES LAMB, as early as 1808, called the works of Fulke Greville `nine parts Machiavel . . for one part Sophocles and Seneca', asserting an intellectual connection between Greville and the Florentine Secretary which has proven durable in the critical canon. Greville's chief modern editor, for example, finds him `nearer than any other Elizabethan Englishman to Machiavelli'. And while it is true that more contemporary scholars tend to qualify Greville's debt to the Italian - Ronald A Rebholz, in his important biographical study, observes that `Greville's "Machiavellism" . . . was in fact [no more than] the pessimism of a [Christian] moral idealist'3 - it is none the less obvious that intriguing parallels between the two thinkers proliferate in Greville's writings. In chapter 15 of the Prince, for example, Machiavelli takes up his famous raison d'etat argument regarding the relative nature of political virtue. The prince, he maintains

Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville April 2 January 18 ) was an English diarist, a great-grandson by his father of the 5th earl of Warwick, and son of Lady Charlotte Bentinck, daughter of the duke of Portland, formerly a leader of the Whig party, and first minister of the crown. Much of his childhood was spent at his grandfather's house at Buistrode. He was one of the pages of George III , and was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford ; but he left the university early, having been appointed private secretary to Earl Bathurst before he was twenty. The interest of the duke of Portland had secured for him the secretaryship of the island of Jamaica , which was a sinecure office, the duties being performed by a deputy, and the reversion of the clerkship of the council. Greville entered upon the discharge of the duties of clerk of the council in ordinary in , and continued to perform them for nearly forty years. He therefore served under three successive sovereigns

Yet when each of us in his own heart looks
He finds the God there far unlike his books. (Mustapha)

    Charles Greville was born in 1794 and became one of the finest political diarists of his time. He was an aristocrat who belonged to a younger branch of the family of the Earls of Warwick. He was educated to Eton and Christ Church, Oxford and began his career as private secretary to Earl Bathurst. From 1821 to 1859 he was Clerk to the Privy Council where his work brought him into contact with all the leading political people of the time. He was a well-known racehorse owner and something of a literary figure. Greville died in 1865. His diaries are generally known as the Greville Papers but properly are called the Journals of the Reigns of George IV, William IV and Queen Victoria . They were published with some omissions between 1875 and 1887. In 1938 they were re-edited by L. Strachey and R. Fulford and comprise the best contemporary political commentary of the period. Dictionary of National Biography : from the earliest times to 1900 (London, Oxford University Press, 1949). Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville, the political diarist, was the eldest son of Charles Greville, grandson to the fifth Lord Warwick, by his wife, Lady Charlotte Cavendish Bentinck, eldest daughter of William Henry, third

    Away with these self-louing Lads,
    Whom Cupid's arrow never glads:
    Away poor souls, that sigh and weep,
    In loue of those that lie asleep:
    For Cupid is a meadow-God,
    And forceth none to kiss the rod. Sweet Cupid's shafts like Destiny
    Do causeless good or ill decree;
    Desert is born out of his bow,
    Reward upon his wing doth go;
    What fools are they that have not known,
    That Love likes no Laws but his own. My songs they be of Cynthia's praise, I wear her Rings on Holy days, In every Tree I write her name, And every Day I read the same. Where Honour Cupids rival is There miracles are seene of his. If Cynthia crave her Ring of me, I blot her name out of the Tree, If doubt do darken things held dear, Then well-fare Nothing once a year For many run, but one must win, Fools only hedge the Cuckoo in. The worth that worthiness should move, Is Love, that is the bow of love
