I'm in the middle of moving (my house, not my website) so I haven't done a lot with MiC since the last newsletter. This month I have some cool SF news and some excellent award news . The featured websites are the Con*Cept Boreal Convention website , and the Ad-Astra convention Website . The media review is the very impressive Rue Morgue Magazine . You won't find any new entries this month (due to the aforementioned move) but I did make a few updates . Look for a bunch of new entries next month. Leo Nolan's father has just passed away. It triggers the wanderlust that took him to Ashland where he met Jeanne, his second wife, whom he is crazy about. She has a son, Adam, a University of Toronto English major, by Bobby who now lives in Dayton, Ohio but never seemed interested in being a father. While Adam wonders what his bio-father is like, Leo is haunted by dreams about his paternal relationship and the mysterious nightly movement of his father's personal effects. Leo decides a road trip with the ghost of his father is needed to find out what Bobby Swiss is like and maybe, at the same time, work out why he and his father grew into the men they became. Is he destined to be his father's son or is he the fellow he thinks he can be?

Terence M. Green, a former high-school English teacher, is the author of six books. Green's tales blur the lines between science fiction and magic realism. At the time of this interview, he was working on his next novel and preparing to have a baby. Green's web site is www.tmgreen.com . The interview was conducted by email in June 2000. TDR: Who is Terence M. Green? That is, summarize your history and interests, particularly your non-writing background. GREEN: I'm a 53-year-old retired high school English teacher who is now writing full-time. I live in downtown Toronto. I was born here. My parents were born here. It's home. I'm married, with 2 sons aged 22 and 19. In an interesting new wrinkle, as I write this (June, 2000), my wife is in her 4th month of pregnancy, so we're going to get a late dividend in our lives, and all will be changed utterly, again. The term might be geriatric parenthood. Having been a father twice, I can say that nothing compares to it. Nothing. We're thrilled. Everyone is excited. I was on staff there from 1976 to 1999, when I finally packed it in. I sort of settled down, but during those years I found other ways of going in and out of the job. From 1983-85, I taught half-time. I took unpaid leave 1986-87, was awarded a paid sabbatical 1991-92 (got down to Harvard for a bit), and took another unpaid leave in 1996-97. From 1997-99, the Harris government in Ontario made teaching an incredibly tough job. I'm out now, but all my sympathies are for those I left behind students and teachers. I began writing in the mid-70s. Over the last 25 years, I've managed to hold down a regular job, raise a family, and publish 5 novels and a collection of short stories. I've just completed a 6th novel ("St. Patrick's Bed"), which will be out mid-2001.

A Witness to Life
by Terence M. Green
Forge Books, 2000 Reviewed by Harold Hoefle The title of Terence M. Green’s third novel, A Witness to Life , worried me – a bit too portentous – as did the straight-up avowals of sentiment in the opening lines: "It breaks my heart to see her lying there, worn out, dying. But she is so happy to see me…It has been so long, so very long. And I have searched so far." I soon realized, however, that my own ironic sensibility had to readjust itself to Green’s project here, to the carefully modulated emotion in this portrait of a man, his city, and his times. On page one we learn that Martin John Radey, the man visiting his daughter and telling us his tale, is dead, and has been dead for thirty-four years. No longer the Irish Catholic worker living in Protestant Toronto from 1887 to 1950, Martin has become a revenant, a starling "in a flock of dead souls." Now possessed of "piercing avian eyes," his incurious human heart replaced "by one beating wildly with wonder," Martin’s thoughts turn increasingly poetic and metaphysical.

Terence M. Green: Children of The Rainbow
On the back, this was touted as one of the Great Time Travel Novels. So, with this expectation in mind, I was somewhat disappointed... In the late 21st Century, an New Inca priest has discovered a means to send people backward in time by 100 years exactly, and retrieve them(as long as they're on or near either the Tropic of Cancer or of Capricorn). Fletcher Christian IV, direct descendant of the Bounty mutineer and internationally- known scientist, decides to go back to Pitcairn Island, former home of his illustrious forebear. However, a French nuclear test in the Pacific throws Christian's jaunt awry, and instead he ends up in chains on the Norfolk Island prison colony in 1835, while Bran Michael Dalton, the prisoner he replaced, ended up on Norfolk in 1972. Christian eventually manages to convince Major Anderson, the commander of the colony, that he is from the future, and Bran adjusts easily to life in the 20th Century. The former plotline is the most interesting one in the book; the Christian/Anderson conversations are intriguing. The rest of the bookup to the oddly unsatisfying ending, in which all is not put back as it wasis lightweight, but not precisely humourous . Just...lacking in conflict, or complication.

    Interview: Terence M. Green
Over a short period at the end of June '01, Canadian author Terence M. Green ( TMG ) answered our questions via email.
YABR : Your writing style is character driven...exploring personalities, family dynamics and relationships. Does this necessitate writing from strict outlines? Or do you "free-flow" your story, letting it unfold as you go? TMG : I have no strict outlines. I do, though, have broad outlines. I know what will happen in the beginning, middle and especially, the end. Everything leads toward the end. I don't think free-flow is the term I'd use. Incidents and scenes are used as deemed appropriate throughoutsome of which you know far in advance, some of which you dream up or discover as the scene itself takes shape. (Sometimes you even put them in afterward... after a first or second draft.) YABR: Have any of the unfolding scenes surprised you as you've written them? I look at Martin Radey in, A Witness To Life, and I see a man so blown about by life's ups and downs, that I marvel at how you could have plotted and tightly steered such a character without him developing a life of his own...so to speak. TMG : Small details of scenes can surprise. I find that things that happen in my everyday life often end up in my fiction at the end of a writing day. People like the refrain: "Where do you get your ideas?" The answer seems to be From Everyday Living and Observing and Reading. What goes on daily, what I'm exposed to, are my "influences," and they become the items and details and scenes that can "surprise" because they were not part of the overall general outline of Beginning, Middle and End that I spoke of earlier. This is the fun of writing. Simply: writing is self-discovery.

Rogue cop Mitch Helwig continues his crusade against crime started in Barking Dogs , here coming to grips with the retribution attacks of his adversaries, aimed at both himself and his sympathetic boss. As I stated in the review for Barking Dogs , vigilante cop stories are nothing new and certainly Blue Limbo, though set in a modestly futuristic Toronto with some neat corresponding weapons/gadgets, doesn't offer much new to the well known formula: cop gets pushed to edge, embarks on justified if highly illegal plan of retribution, must deal with the bad guys threatening his family, ultimately prevails...though we are left aware that the battle for good is a never ending one. BUT, as is his trademark, author Green succeeds in raising his story from the realm of pedestrian by infusing the characters with such vibrant, real personalities that we the reader end up empathizing with their plight(s) and looking beyond the (in this case) common plot elements. A good read, though not as original as his series starting with
