By that I mean, do you know what your grandparents and/or your aunts/uncles are/were like as people rather that just as big folk with big voices who told you to go out and play? Yeah? Well, consider yourself lucky. Some of us didn't and wish, at times, we did. But I've had a glimpse of what this must be like. For I've been fortunate enough to read Shadows of Ashland Some dozen years ago, I was on an airline shuttle bus riding from Providence to Logan Airport after attending a convention. That weekend, I had read a freebie SF digest magazine because it contained a story by one of my favourite authors. In the same issue was a story called

Green, Terence M(ichael) , born in Canada on 2 February 1947 Green, a high-school English teacher in his native Toronto, had his first SF story, "Japanese Tea," published in the Australian anthology Alien Worlds in 1978. His first sale to the U.S. was "Till Death Do Us Part" in the December 1981 ; he's had three other stories in that magazine since, plus three in Asimov's (including a collaboration with Andrew Weiner in the June 1988 issue). Green is a soft SF writer; his work is thoughtful, introspective, and character-driven, and most often explores family relationships. Green's first novel, Barking Dogs (1988), expanding his brilliant short story of the same name from the May 1984 Ark of Ice contains a sequel novelette entitled "Blue Limbo."

SOJALS rating Good (2/5) I first read this in May 1998. In the Toronto of the near future, the police, as always, are fighting a losing battle against crime. Organized crime has more money, more resources and better weaponry, it's tentacles reach into high levels of the administration and crime prevention. For the officers themselves, faced with knowledge that they can but rarely make a difference, it's soul destroying. Police officers have a divorce rate twice the national average and life expectancy forty-percent below. Mitch Helwig is such an officer. His wife has left him, he's losing his daughter. He's not been thinking clearly since he found his wife cheating on him. So he's probably still not at his best when he decides to take out a warehouse full of several billion dollars of illegal drugs and other criminal paraphanalia. Of course, the criminals are less than happy about this significant loss to their enterprise, and turn their sights on Helwig, his fellow officers and his family. And meantime, scientists at the Sunnybrook Medical Centre has discovered how to resurrect, for just a few weeks, the dead.

(Forge Books, NY, 240 pages) (Reviewed by Kevin Kennedy)
As Terence M. Green's fifth novel begins, the narrator informs us, "I was born in Elora,
a village some sixty miles northwest of Toronto, in 1880. I have been dead... for thirty-four years." In A Witness to Life , acclaimed Toronto fantasist Green draws us into Martin Radey's life
through a device shape-changing that owes much to Eastern and aboriginal spirituality:
Transformed into a starling, Radey joins a flock on a time-travelling exploration of his own life. "We rose up in a cloud of shimmering ink blots, without sound, the world, patchwork, spread out below us." And what an odd little life it is. Radey is an Irish Catholic, one of a family of 13 children, who spends his life bumbling around, getting up to nothing much. He's a disappointment to his first wife and children, an unambitious worker who retires as a receiver at Simpson's (if this name means more to you than just the cartoon family, you're definitely old enough to enjoy Green's portrait of Toronto in the first half of this century) after 30 solid, unspectacular years of employment.
