THOMAS GRAY
GRAY, THOMAS A very complete bibliography of Gray will be found in Dr. Bradshaws edition of the poems in the Aldine series. Dodsley published ten of the poems, exclusive of the Long Story, in I 768. Masons Life of Gray (1778) included the poems and some hitherto unpublished fragments, with a selection from his letters, much garbled. Mathias in 1814 reprinted Masons edition and added much from Grays MS. commentaries together with some more of his translations. The most exhaustive edition of Grays writings was achieved by the Rev. John Mitford, who first did justice to the correspondence with Wharton and Norton Nicholls (5 vols., Pickering, 1836-1843 correspondence of Gray and Mason, Bentley, 1853); see also the edition of the works by Edmund Gosse (4 you. 1884); the Life by the same in Eng. Men of Letters (2nd ed., 1889); some further relics are given in Gre y,and His Friends by D. C. Tovey (Cambridge, 1890); and a new edition of the letters copiously annotated by D. C. Tovey is in the Standard Library (1900I9o7). Nicholls Illustrations, vol. vi. p. 805, quoted by Professor Kittredge in the Nation, Sept. 12th, 1900, gives the true story of Grays migration to Pembroke College. Matthew Arnolds essay on Gray in Wards English Poets is one of the minor classics of literary criticism. (D. C. To.)

Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard
T HE curfew tolls the knell of parting day,
The lowing herd wind slowly o'er the lea,
The plowman homeward plods his weary way,
And leaves the world to darkness and to me.
Now fades the glimm'ring landscape on the sight,
And all the air a solemn stillness holds,
Save where the beetle wheels his droning flight,
      And drowsy tinklings lull the distant folds;
Save that from yonder ivy-mantled tow'r
The moping owl does to the moon complain
Of such, as wand'ring near her secret bow'r,
      Molest her ancient solitary reign.
Beneath those rugged elms, that yew-tree's shade,
Where heaves the turf in many a mould'ring heap,
Each in his narrow cell for ever laid,
The rude forefathers of the hamlet sleep.
The breezy call of incense-breathing Morn,
The swallow twitt'ring from the straw-built shed,
The cock's shrill clarion, or the echoing horn,
No more shall rouse them from their lowly bed.
For them no more the blazing hearth shall burn,
Or busy housewife ply her evening care:
No children run to lisp their sire's return

Gray was a reclusive gentleman-poet and he did not write many poems, but this tribute to the humble life brought him immediate fame and the offer of the poet laureateship; it also became the most reprinted poem of the 18th century, one which Thomas Hardy would love and borrow from for his title, "Far From the Madding Crowd." top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR Blake's Water-Colours for the Poems of Thomas Gray by William Blake, Thomas Gray
