To smuggle some few years and strive to mend
A broken character and constitution.
Earl Godwin trembled for his neighbouring sand,
Here Seagulls scream and cormorants rejoice,
Here reign the blustring north and blighting east,
No tree is heard to whisper, bird to sing,
Yet nature cannot furnish out the feast,
Art he invokes new horrors still to bring.

Arches and turrets nodding to their fall, Unpeopled palaces delude his eyes, And mimick desolation covers all. Place Extract Kingsgate Margate Database Credits PHP/Perl:James Wilson, Christian Jacobsen; Webdesign:Antony Barron; Graphics: Paul Haine

Elegy Written In a Country Churchyard The curfew tolls the knell of parting day, The lowing herd wind slowly o'er the lea, The plowman homeward plods his weary way, And leaves the world to darkness and to me. Now fades the glimm'ring landscape on the sight, And all the air a solemn stillness holds, Save where the beetle wheels his droning flight, And drowsy tinklings lull the distant folds; Save that from yonder ivy-mantled tow'r The moping owl does to the moon complain Of such, as wand'ring near her secret bow'r, Molest her ancient solitary reign. Beneath those rugged elms, that yew-tree's shade, Where heaves the turf in many a mould'ring heap, Each in his narrow cell for ever laid

A Life
Robert L. Mack
736 pp. 50 illus., 6 1/8 x 9 1/4
Cloth ISBN 0-300-08499-4
This major biography of Thomas Gray (1716-1771), the first in nearly half a century, expands our knowledge of the life of the English poet and our understanding of his personality and influential body of works. Robert L. Mack incorporates recentand often radically revisionaryscholarship on Gray, drawing on developments in eighteenth-century studies and gender studies, as well as on extensive original archival research into the life of the poet and his family. The result is an eloquent and enlightening book, sure to be the definitive biography of this great poet, a forefather of the Romantic Movement. The book provides important new information on Gray’s family and background and closely examines the domestic environment of his formative years. By investigating how his father’s abuse affected the poet, Mack casts new light on Gray’s personalityand on the way that personality consistently and invariably informed his writing. The author applies a revised understanding of the psychological and sexual tensions in Gray’s life to a close reading of his poetry and correspondence and finds a homoerotic desire lying just beneath the surface of almost all of Gray’s important writings, including his “Sonnet” on the death of Richard West, the “Eton Ode,” and his masterpiece, “Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard.” Robert L. Mack is lecturer in English at the University of Exeter.
