By 1917, though still an active serviceman, Graves had published three volumes. In 1918, he spent a year in the trenches, where he was again severely wounded. In January 1918, at the age of twenty-two, he married eighteen-year-old Nancy Nicholson, with whom he was to have four children. Traumatized by the war, he went to Oxford with his wife and took a position at St. John's College. Graves's early volumes of poetry, like those of his contemporaries, deal with natural beauty and bucolic pleasures, and with the consequences of the First World War. Over the Brazier and Fairies and Fusiliers earned for Graves the reputation as an accomplished war poet. After meeting the American poet and theorist Laura Riding in 1926, Graves's poetry underwent a significant transformation. Douglas Day has written that the "influence of Laura Riding is quite possibly the most important single element in [Graves's] poetic career: she persuaded him to curb his digressiveness and his rambling philosophizing and to concentrate instead on terse, ironic poems written on personal themes." In 1927, Graves and his first wife separated permanently, and in 1929 he published

Navigation Page Robert Graves Robert Graves Robert von Ranke Graves was born in Wimbledon on July 24, 1895, the middle child of his father's second family of five. Graves's father already had five children from his marriage to his first wife (who had died of consumption (TB) in 1886). Graves began to write poetry while still at Charterhouse School. He was encouraged in this by one of his master's at Charterhouse, the mountaineer, George Mallory, and also by Edward Marsh (who also encouraged Siegfried Sassoon ). When war broke out, Graves joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He got to know Siegfried Sassoon while serving out in France. The two became firm friends and spent hours discussing poetry and what they would do after the War. Graves had written some realistic poetry about the War, which he showed to Sassoon early in their friendship. At that point Sassoon was still writing chivalric war poetry and he disapproved of the realism of Graves's war poetry, rather ironically in light of the fact that Graves was later to bemoan the gloominess of Sassoon's and Owen's poetry. Whilst serving in France Graves was badly wounded and mistakenly reported dead. Sassoon was very upset and wrote a poem about the loss of his friend

The poetry of Robert Graves
by Robert Richman I stood beneath the wall/ And there defied them all.
A t the time of his death in December 1985, at the age of ninety, on the island of Majorca, Robert Graves had long been a legendary figure in the literary world. This was due in part to his immense production: nineteen novels and short-story collections, sixty-three books of nonfiction (including translations), and fifty-six volumes of poetry. Because of this extraordinary productivity, Graves is the only serious writer of our time whose career was on a scale we associate more with the previous century than with our own. Goodbye to All That , published to coincide with his departure from England in 1929. (He went to Majorca, where he remained until the Spanish Civil War caused him to leave in 1936; ten years later he returned to the island and lived out the rest of his life there.) No reader of Goodbye to All That Graves was part of the literary generation that was profoundly altered by the war. For some, the response took a political form. In the case of Graves, the war only confirmed what he had learned to despise at school. To him, the nastiness of the generals was a larger and more lethal version of the nastiness of his masters at Charterhouse. As he writes in Goodbye to All That Oxford Addresses on Poetry Goodbye to All That Another irony is that Graves in his own life craved guidance. This is nowhere better seen than in his thirteen-year association with the American poet Laura Riding. In the early Twenties, Riding was affiliated with John Crowe Ransom and Allen Tate, and with their Fugitive group, which espoused regionalism in literature. Ransom used the occasion of a review in

34. Home Page
Study of the White Goddess as described in the work of robert graves. Includes a variety of other areas of Goddess worship.
http://www.thewhitegoddess.com
Welcome to my web site which is dedicated to the study of the White Goddess as described in the seminal work of Robert Graves . The White Goddess is the Goddess of the Old Religion that was suppressed by the Christians. She is manifest in her natural epiphanies and in the turning of the Wheel of the Year. The White Goddess has many names in different lands and different cults associated with her worship. She is the Earth and we ignore her at our peril. She is the creator of the universe, She is transcendent and omnipotent but can be known through her creation. She represents perfect harmony, wisdom and peace. Praise be to the Goddess. IMBOLIC The Urban Goddess The Goddess manifests herself in her sacred plant epiphanies even in the midst of our modern cities. These epiphanies speak to us of ancient wisdom that we either never knew or have forgotten through the mists of time. Those who have persecuted pagans over the last two thousand years have deliberately suppressed the message of some epiphanies. As Christianity made itself the dominant religion in Britain it viciously suppressed the Old Religion and murdered its practitioners. The Old Religion did not die out but went underground, its adherents meeting furtively at night for fear of being tortured and killed. Because of the great secrecy and the atmosphere of fear it was difficult to educate initiates into the old ways. In time some of the ancient teachings and wisdom were lost but traces of their message can still be witnessed in surviving folklore. We must try to recapture the essentials of our pagan civilisation as the message of the plants is tied up with our rustic heritage and can only be fully understood through knowledge of the Old Religion.
