Robert von Ranke Graves, the son of Alfred Graves, an inspector of schools, and Amalie von Ranke, was born in Wimbledon in London on 24th July, 1895. His father was also the editor of an Irish literary magazine and a published poet. At thirteen Graves was sent to Charterhouse public school where he was bullied. Graves later wrote how "the legend was put about that I was not only German but a German-Jew."
On the outbreak of the First World War with Germany in 1914, Graves enlisted in the British army. Granted a commission in the Royal Welch Fusiliers, Captain Graves served on the Western Front until in July 1916 he was seriously wounded when shrapnel from an exploding shell pierced his chest and thigh. The army mistakenly informed Alfred Graves that his son had been killed and even forwarded the family his personal belongings. His obituary was published in

Robert Graves
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Robert von Ranke Graves July 24 December 7 ) was an English scholar, best remembered for his work as a poet and novelist , who wrote over 140 works. Graves, born in Wimbledon (England), received his early education at Charterhouse School and won a scholarship to Oxford University St John's College ). With the outbreak of World War I he enlisted with the Royal Welch Fusiliers (RWF). The horror of his wartime experiences had a profound effect upon him; he published his first volume of poems in , but he later tried to suppress his war poetry. At the Battle of the Somme in 1916 he received such serious injuries that his family were informed of his death. However, he recovered, at the cost of permanent damage to his lungs, and spent the remainder of the war in England - despite his efforts to return to the front. In , Graves played an important part in saving his fellow poet, Siegfried Sassoon , from a court martial after the latter went absent without leave and wrote to his commanding officer denouncing the war. The two officers had become firm friends while serving with the RWF. Graves's biographies document the story well, and

Biography of Robert Graves
Robert Graves: A Twentieth Century Life Robert Graves, born a little over a hundred years ago, is one of our century's most versatile and original writers. Equally at home in poetry, fiction, and many forms of non-fiction, Grave's life serves as an example of continuing self-renewal and his work addresses the most agonizing problems of the twentieth century. The immense literary production of this writer, scarcely examined by academic scholarship, constitutes one of the great treasures of our time. Graves is probably best known as the author of historical novels. Especially well known are the so-called Claudius novels ( I, Claudius and Claudius the God). Graves is not the kind of writer who uses history and literature to write escapist narratives. On the contrary, his frontal, penetrating studies of contemporary history demonstrate his stature as a committed, politically astute writer. Between the two European wars, Graves writes cogent, careful books on two of the most important developments of that turbulent period. In The Long Weekend Graves studies social and political developments following the Great War. This deceptively simple book is constructed with great subtlety. On one level, it is splendid social history. Graves draws a lucid, detailed portrait of the social experimentation that was prevalent during the Roaring Twenties. He couples this portrait with a detailed analysis of political life between the two wars. Beneath his crisp social and political commentary, Graves probes the central conundrum of the whole period: how does a culture allow itself to slip into yet another war after the horrible bloodletting of the First World War? Are there forces within European life that lead inevitably to instability and war? If so, what can be done to neutralize these forces?

Robert James Graves
Irish physician, born March 27, 1797, Dublin; died March 20, 1853, Dublin.
Associated eponyms: Basedow's syndrome or disease A disorder characterized by a triad of hyperthyroidism, goiter, and exophthalmos (bulging eyeballs). Biography: Robert James Graves was one of the leaders of the Irish, or Dublin school of diagnosis, which emphasised clinical observation of patients. He was the son of a clergyman. He received his degree from the University of Dublin in 1818 after a brilliant undergraduate career. After studying in London, Berlin, Göttingen, Hamburg and Copenhagen, he returned to Dublin in 1821 and set up a medical practice, becoming chief physician at Meath Hospital. He was also physician at the County of Dublin Infirmary and the Hospital for incurables. At Meath in Dublin Graves also taught clinical medicine, introducing reforms of medical training that he had witnessed on his travels. This included, among other things, bedside teaching, a major novelty in a country where medical teaching had been ex cathedra only. Graves assigned to advanced students the responsibility for diagnosis and treatment of ward patients, under the supervision of the faculty. One of his students was William Stokes (1804-1878), who soon became his collaborator. Another student of his was Richard Townsend, who obtained his doctorate at Edinburgh in 1824.
