The Tin Drum . The literary fame? The prize money? The chance to give a speech in Stockholm? All great, no doubt, but what really got Grass going was the pipes. "I got four pipes from people in German pipe-smoker clubs," he said during a recent two-hour conversation at his home. "They wrote me marvelous letters and said it's very difficult these days for a pipe smoker because people say don't smoke here, don't smoke there. They said, 'We admire you and your books, yeah sure, but also because always when you are on television you smoke your pipe, and that's a great help for us.'" Even as Grass, now seventy-two, has stubbornly confronted Germany's postwar legacy and embraced left-wing politics with a deep seriousness, his considerable reputation as a political writer may lead some to overlook the fun he's having. They forget the sly smile, the glint in the eye, the cordiality of a man who, after an interview at his home, will offer a visitor a sample from a bottle of "Nobel" grappa with his name on the label. On how he wants future generations to approach reading his work, Grass says: "I hope that they are still able to laugh when they are reading my books." That's not always easy to do, even with his gift for black humor.

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback German poet, novelist, playwright, sculptor, and printmaker, who, with his extraordinary first novel die BLECHTROMMEL (1959, The Tin Drum) became the literary spokesman for the German generation that grew up in Nazi era. Grass received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999. The author has described himself as "Spätaufklärer", a belated apostle of enlightenment in an era that has grown tired of reason. He has once said, that writers, by giving us ''mouth-to-ear artificial respiration,'' help keep humanity alive. (from The Tin Drum The Tin Drum . His other works from the late 1950s were mostly plays, which, like his verse, achieved only modest public acclaim. The Tin Drum caused a furor in Germany because of its depiction of the Nazis. The central character is Oscar Matzerath, who has refused to grow as a protest to the cruelties of German history. He communicates only through his toy drum. Die Blechtrommel The Tin Drum "It's true: you're innocent. I, too, born almost late enough, am held to be free from guilt. Only if I wanted to forget, if you were unwilling to learn how it slowly happened, only then might words of one syllable catch up with us: words like guilt and shame; they, too, resolute snails, impossible to stop."

Web posted at: 9:31 a.m. EDT (1331 GMT) STOCKHOLM, Sweden The Swedish Academy cited Grass' first novel, "The Tin Drum," published in 1959. "Here he comes to grips with the enormous task of reviewing contemporary history by recalling the disavowed and the forgotten: the victims, losers and lies that people wanted to forget because they had once believed in them. ALSO MESSAGE BOARD Share your thoughts. "It is not too audacious to assume that "The Tin Drum" will become one of the enduring literary works of the 20th century," according to a statement by the Academy. Grass reacted with joy to news of the announcement.
