It is based on bedtime stories and letters to his son and was not originally intended for publication. In it Grahame created the memorable characters of Rat, Badger, Mole and Toad. Grahame's The Golden Age and Dream Days , which were immediately successful, are praised for their realistic depiction of childhood and the sharp observations of the child narrator. The Wind in the Willows narrates the famous adventures of Toad of Toad Hall and his riverside companions, Ratty, Mole and Badger. It remains a best selling and well loved children's book. A A Milne's stage version, Toad of Toad Hall (1930) brought the characters to an even wider audience. Abandoning his spring cleaning, Mole runs off to the river and embarks on a series of escapades with his new friend Ratty - from idyllic river-side picnics, to snow-bound adventures in the Wild Wood and a drive in conceited Toad's shiny new motor car. When Toad is imprisoned for motor car theft, only escaping by dressing as a washer woman, he returns to find his home has been captured by the massed ranks of Stoats, Weasels and Ferrets. Under the authority of Badger, the animals rally together to save Toad’s home, but the question is: Will Toad be reformed?

Search all of The Wind in the Willows Mole thought his happiness was complete when, as he meandered aimlessly along, suddenly he stood by the edge of a full-fed river. Never in his life had he seen a river beforethis sleek, sinuous, full-bodied animal, chasing and chuckling, gripping things with a gurgle and leaving them with a laugh, to fling itself on fresh playmates that shook themselves free, and were caught and held again." Such is the cautious, agreeable Mole's first introduction to the river and the Life Adventurous. Emerging from his home at Mole End one spring, his whole world changes when he hooks up with the good-natured, boat-loving Water Rat, the boastful Toad of Toad Hall, the society- hating Badger who lives in the frightening Wild Wood, and countless other mostly well-meaning creatures.
