THE SURFACE
It has a hole in it. Not only where I concentrate. The river still ribboning, twisting up, into its re- arrangements, chill enlightenments, tight-knotted quickenings and looseningswhispered messages dissolving the messengers the river still glinting-up into its handfuls, heapings. glassy forgettings under the river of my attention and the river of my attention laying itself down bending, reassemblingover the quick leaving-offs and windy obstacles and the surface rippling under the wind's attention rippling over the accumulations, the slowed-down drifting permanences of the cold bed. I say iridescent and I look down. The leaves very still as they are carried. Materialism (Ecco)

Bibliography Download the PDF Introduction Jorie Graham’s “Mind” first appeared in the literary journal Water Table, and is included in her first collection of poems titled Hybrids of Plants and of Ghosts (1980). The title for the collection comes from German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s book Thus Spake Zarathustra . The poem appears in the fourth section of the collection, following “The Nature of Evidence,” a poem about the speaker’s ability to apprehend reality. Comprised of thirty-nine short lines, “Mind” tackles a similar theme and is more accessible than many of Graham’s poems. However, it still requires rereading for full appreciation. Graham is known for abstraction in her poems, which means she is as interested in ideas and argument as she is in presenting striking images. Many of her poems are informed by her reading in history, science, art, and philosophy. In “Mind,” Graham uses a series of metaphors to describe the idea of the mind and the thinking process. Her poem embodies, as much as depicts, thinking. By comparing processes of nature with the ways in which the human mind makes sense of perception, Graham draws on the romantic tradition in poetry from Samuel Taylor Coleridge through Wallace Stevens, particularly in the ways these poets describe the relationships between imagination and reality, nature and humanity, and the self and other.

In the ethic in wonder, where the other and the object of the poetic subject will change, shift, the dynamic of desire, the poetic tension, between the subject and the other will change; syntax, poetic structure, and the subject in discourse will have to respond to this. In an ethic in wonder one does not determine the object, one engages with it but is at all times accountable/responsible to the Otherresponsible for its relation to the world. It is this problematic in postmodern poetics that affords me (and us?) the possibility of new intrasubjective, poetic, political, sexual and cultural relations and systemsrequires an ethical imagination. Poststructural psychoanalysis and postmodern thought have come to understand discourse as symptomatic of subjectivity, thus it is in discursive practices one can determine the workings of desire and imagination which any given subject performs in relations to its objects and others. As Antony Easthope has shown in Poetry as Discourse , discursive acts have two moments, the which is the act of uttering/writing, and the

Jorie Graham
The Ecco Press, $22 by Bonnie Costello Jorie Graham's subject, in this impressive new volume, is desire and the error it inevitably leads us into. In our restless urge to form and fail and reform, in our apparent glimpses of utopia, we are heroically human. Poetry is not, for Graham, a place to relax.
Then the cicadas again like kindling that won't take.
The struck match of some utopia we no longer remember
the terms of
how she wants to be legible, how the light streaking her shades
now grows vermilion
which she would capture of course, because that, she has heard,
from the rumourous diamond-dust, is what is required,
as also her spiritnow that it has been swallowed like a lustrous hailstone by her unquenchable bodysuggests the zero at the heart of the christened bonfire . . . what has awakened which we thought we'd extinguished, us still standing here sword in hand, hand extended . . . aren't we going to close the elaborate folder which holds the papers in their cocoon of possibility

    Beverly Pepper and Jorie Graham
Beverly Pepper 's sixteen foot long hand-colored photogravure richly enfolds the stanzas of Jorie Graham 's elegiac poem "In the Pasture" into a bound book that is in turn secreted in the belly of a bronze sculpture. Reminiscent of Neolithic monuments, the bronze's deep relief and earth colors recall the furrows and clods of worked soil. Sensual and rigorous, personal and universal, In the Pasture reflects on culture and nature and the struggle of the self to find meaning in the world. Separately, sculptor Beverly Pepper and poet Jorie Graham are vigorous and revolutionary forces in contemporary arts and letters in the U.S. and abroad. Together they are a formidable team. Pepper has bequeathed her creativity, intellect and drive to Graham. The mother's gift for transforming elements of the earth into a poetry of the visual blossoms in the daughter's fertile fashioning of language into an architecture of the soul. Pepper's large scale sculptures are found in plazas and parks around the world, and her record of exhibitions and collections is distinguished; she holds honorary doctorates from Pratt Institute and the Maryland Institute of Art.

Jorie Graham In/Silence I try to hold my lie in mind. My thinking one thing while feeling another. My being forced. Because the truth is a thing one is not permitted to say. That it is reserved for silence, a buttress in silence's flyings, its motions always away from source; that it is re- served for going eye, that seeks the sleek minimum of the meaningless made. Here in the morning light. In matter's massive/muscular/venerable holding-in of all this flow. Next door the roses flow. Blood in the hand that reaches for them flows.
Jorie Graham is the author of eight collections of poetry, including The Dream of the Unified Field (Selected Poems 1974-1994) which won the Pulitzer Prize. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and teaches at Harvard University.

mtheune@iwu.edu From Design to Dasein : The Meditative Tradition in Jorie Graham's Never In typical meditative poems, a unified subject observes something in the world-an object, a landscape-then meditates on that object, interpreting the deep meaning, the deep design of the thing to arrive at timeless wisdom. Earlier in the twentieth century, two poems, Frost's "Design" and Moore's "A Grave," did much to problematize this tradition by admitting information-death and the power of the object-often overlooked by previous meditations. In the early twenty-first century, Jorie Graham extends the meditative tradition, investigating it further, discovering a new concern for meditation: historicity. Graham's work never offers timeless meditations but instead repeatedly shows how dependent the meditative act is on the meditating subject's Dasein , her being-there, her particular historical situation. This is especially clear in Graham's latest book
