Honours Essay Proposals Examples from Past Years Example One Honours Thesis Proposal Sarah Thrasher September 18, 1998 Composed with a remarkable lucidity and grace, the works of Barbara Gowdy consistently foreground the marginalized in an attempt to give voice to the traditionally silenced "other." The idea of the "grotesque," while fundamentally rooted in the perverse, is embraced by Gowdy as a vehicle through which to explore the emancipatory potential of "otherness." Seizing the liminal space of the carnivalized body, she interrogates the boundaries between the freakish and ordinary, the bizarre and the banal, in so doing, exposing hitherto concealed doctrines of normalcy within our culture. In particular, it is within the institution of the family that the "grotesque" sensibility comes to fruition in many of Gowdy's works. Penetrating the veneer of the nuclear family paradigm, from her pseudo-romantic vision of the Malone clan in Through the Green Valley, to her fantastical portrait of the Canarys in Mister Sandman, she investigates the secrets harbored behind closed doors. By presenting the home as a locus of eccentric activity, her domestic Gothic creations systematically deconstruct those standards of normative behaviour by underscoring that "even in so-called perfect families there are webbed feet and kleptomaniacs, perverted gerbils, some loony genius ancestor" (Gowdy, Sandman 246). The theoretical approach espoused by Mikhail Bakhtin lends itself remarkably well to Gowdy's work given its affirmation of the "dialogic," that is, the embracing of simultaneous differences over a single, monolithic discourse. Viewed as a whole, the collection contains a wide range of bodies whose limbs join deficiently or abnormally. 'Body and Soul' contains several unfinished bodies and minds (characters are blind, deaf, armless, retarded); 'Sylvie' contains at least one overgrown body, the protagonist herself being attached to a redundant pair of legs; 'Presbyterian Crosswalk' deals with an apparent weightless body and a diminishing head; 'Two-Headed Man' features two separate people living in a single body. In these stories we see what otherwise is normally concealed and little thought of: the hinges of bodily flesh. At first I was a little surprised to find it in the general fiction section of my book store. This is the story of Mud, and her family. They are elephants living in an every shrinking habitat. Humans are their primary creditors. They, their rifles and their fences are changing the elephant's world at a pace too fast for these massive beasts to understand. The book is written primarily from Mud's point of view, sharing her throughout and visions throughout the tail. The reviews call it a story of a quest, whereas I would call it the story of survival. It takes a few pages to get use to the characters' names and their way of talking. Then the book gets interesting. Elephants don't forget. They share a sort of racial memory that dims before they were born and seems almost to stretch until after they die. A few dreamers can see the future, but it is only in very troubling glances. Mud is one such dreamer. They can live in the past and the present simultaneously. This, the book explains, is often what they are doing when they appear to physically be doing nothing. The book covers several mating periods, mostly in flashbacks. It even spends some time being told from Tall Time's (the Link Bull) and Date Bed's point of view. It shows how other creatures in the environment are seen by the Elephants; some are as intelligent, others are not. This variation in species and abilities is a rare trait for a furry book.
