I almost never write non-fiction anymore, maybe because the more that I publish, the happier I am to stay behind the mask of fiction. It was luck, however, when Carol Shields and Marjorie Anderson wrote to me asking for a piece on secrets, that I had just finished the short story "Wild Roses". I have published six novels and three short story collections: The Truth Teller Angel Walk Random Descent and The Immaculate Conception Photography Gallery are all available in Vintage Canada paperback. I have also edited Without a Guide , an anthology of women’s travel stories, which has been published in the United States, the United Kingdom, Holland and Canada. In 1997 I won Canada’s Marian Engel Award for a Woman Writer in Mid-Career; in 1992 I won the City of Toronto Book Award for Hearts of Flame . In 1998 I was named Distinguished Alumni by the University of Alberta. I was born in Edmonton and live in Toronto. I have taught English and Creative Writing at Ryerson Polytechnical University and York University. My radio dramas have been broadcast on CBC Radio and my many reviews and features have appeared in Time magazine

    ABOUT THIS BOOK
“In a life so well-documented, these next few months form a rare gap. It is as if the dark cloud and fog Audubon sails into transcends mere weather, and becomes a state of mind. As if Labrador itself (or its weather) swallows the story.”
His need to capture the fugitive colours of birds pushed John James Audubon into impossible places, none more dangerous than the fog-ridden coast of Labrador in the summer of 1833. In mesmerizing prose, novelist Katherine Govier explores this fateful summer in the life of a man as untamed as his subjects.
Running two steps ahead of the bailiff, alternately praised and reviled by critics, John James Audubon set himself the audacious task of drawing, from nature, every bird in North America. The result was his masterpiece, The Birds of America, which he and his family published and sold to subscribers on both sides of the Atlantic. In June 1833, he enlisted his son and a party of young gentlemen to set sail for nesting grounds no ornithologist had ever seen, in the treacherous passage between Newfoundland and Labrador.
Fogbound at Little Natashquan, he encounters Captain Henry Wolsey Bayfield of the Royal Navy, whose mission is to chart the labyrinthine coast to make it safe for sea traffic. Bayfield is an exacting and duty-bound aristocrat; the charismatic Audubon spins tales to disguise his dubious parentage and lack of training. Bayfield is a confirmed bachelor; Audubon is a married man in love with his young assistant. But the captain becomes the artist’s foil and his measuring stick, his judge and, oddly, the recipient of his long-held secrets.

Ward Chipman Library Building The Alberta-born, Toronto-based author Katherine Govier has published seven novels, three collections of short stories, and two travel books. Her seventh novel, Creation , explores the life and aesthetic of a visual artist, as did her novel Angel Walk The Immaculate Conception Photography Gallery Hearts of Flame (1991), Govier is also the recipient of the Marian Engel Award (1997), which recognizes the accomplishments of an author at mid-career. This past summer filming of her short story "The Piano Tuner" got underway. In 1833 John James Audubon, the illustrious bird artist, sets out to find the undiscovered avian species of Labrador. He hires a schooner and, with his son and his assistants, explores the coast of Newfoundland and enters the labyrinthine Strait of Belle Isle. In the murky hold of The Ripley "Angel Walk is assured, original and completely convincing. Her portrait of Cory Ditchburn is a major contribution to the gallery of strong female characters created by Margaret Laurence, Margaret Atwood and others."

    Creation by Katherine Govier, again
I recently finished reading Govier's novel. There is a lot to be said for reading a text in fits and starts, in the cracks between the blocks that take up most of one's time. It can be frustrating, but it allows one to inhabit a novel in a way that a quick, devouring read does not. Creation is a modestly sized book, but it took me weeks to read . And just as well: it's not a drive-through novel. I know next to nothing about Audubon and would be interested to hear from anyone who does, about just how "green" he really was. Govier's Audubon reaches no startling conclusions, but he is disgusted with the rape of the wilderness he witnesses, and he slowly comes to realize his own part in the certain extinction of nature. It is a violent book: "nature red in tooth and claw," but even more, "man against nature." The quotation marks are implied by the novel; Govier is at once a highly visual, sensual writer, but also a distant, considering one. It is a strong combination.

    Review

    Creation
is a tour de force, a finely written historical account that plays, for a serious purpose, with the very nature of historical inquiry and humanity?s place in the natural order. For all its absence of proof, it is a deeply convincing story.? Maclean's
Creation The Sun Times (Owen Sound) Creation ] is a marvelous piece of art?. Through a command of period vernacular, astonishing pictorial detail and craftsman-like skill, Govier brings Audubon alive?. Creation is a sprawling novel, teeming with natural abundance, yet delivered in small, intimate scenes?. the reward is deep engagement, the kind that promises a novel a lasting place in the affections of readers.? The Toronto Star ?Govier has crafted a novel of ideas, inseparably layering the ecological and personal. Redeeming both is that most human commodity, hope. Amid stone and black water, Govier finds an indifferent platform for both our ambitions and our hope.? The National Post ?In an inventive sleight-of-hand combining fact with fiction, history with myth, Govier spins the story of a man on a relentless quest to tame the untamable?. The book, with its beautiful cover, is meticulously researched, its descriptions of birds, their colours, their song, their habitats, enchanting. And [Govier?s] landscapes are both striking and wonderfully observed: rocky promontories, dark water, glowering skies and the chill splendour of icebergs.?
