KATHERINE GOVIER is a resident of Toronto, Ontario, where she lives with her husband and two children. However, this Edmonton, Alberta native has also lived in Calgary, Washington D.C. and London, England. While living in England, Katherine taught English at Leeds University. She has also been an English instructor at Ryerson Polytechnic Institute, and visiting lecturer in creative writing at York University in Toronto. Perhaps it is because of Katherine's travels that a strongly recognizable setting is very important in the books she has written. These include three collections of short stories: Fables of Brunswick Avenue Before and After (1989) and The Immaculate Conception Photography Gallery (1994), and five novels: Random Descent Going Through the Motions Between Men Hearts of Flame (1991) and Angel Walk (1996), and edited a travel anthology Without a Guide In addition to her writing, Katherine is active in Canada's writing community. Canada) Corinne Ditchburn's career as a photojournalist and photographer took her from the Canadian Maritimes and Ontario to war-torn England in the 1940's, and back again. Now eighty-five years old, she finally agrees to a retrospective. Her son goes through her photographs, choosing the ones that tell the clearest story. This sets up the narrative structure of the book: a description of a photograph opens many of the chapters, distilling the essence of each part of the story into one crystalline image. Some readers may have problems identifying with the May-December romance between the heroine and her mentor, painter Alan Bloom, but Corinne Ditchburn makes for a strong and interesting character. Her motions are thoughtful. Considered. And her answers, while articulate and seemingly given easily, are thoughtful and considered, as well. She is not a surprise to me. Like her work, Govier is quietly vivacious, witty but not hilarious and perfectly turned out in an entirely casual way. While these things might amount to unpleasant contradictions in another, Govier makes it all work very well. In her work and in her mien, Govier is a writer without compare. Comparisons are made anyway. In articles about Govier, Margaret Atwood's name comes up a lot, though the comparisons seem unjust. Both women are Canadians and both have decided to strike where no genre exists to tell stories that are close to their hearts. Also, both women's work occasionally slides into the historical but their styles personally and in writing are very different. In 1989, in a

This event is free and open to the public. A book sale and signing will follow the presentation. Govier will be discussing her new novel, Creation , that recreates the summer of 1833 when legendary bird artist John James Audubon traveled the treacherous passage from Newfoundland to Labrador in search of nesting grounds no ornithologist had ever seen. The voyage was one of the final stages in Audubon's quest to draw from nature every bird in North America, culminating in his monumental achievement, Birds of America The Central Library houses one of the rare complete sets of Audubon's Birds of America . This famous 19th century set of four double-elephant folio volumes features magnificent hand colored plates of 1,065 individual American birds. Each page measures two by three feet. One book from the set is always on display in the Library's Rare Book Room. The plate on display is changed once per week, with the exception of the larger ones, which remain for two weeks. It takes more than eight years to view all 435 of the engravings.
