great stuff
Steven Gould. Wildside . Tor. 1996
Review:
A "rites of passage" novel about coping with a new-found ability in adolescence, this time, a gate to a parallel, unspoiled, earth. Charlie is short, fat, bright, and has his own secret world. But unlike most, his is real. He gets four friends involved, first selling passenger pigeons to zoos, then getting more ambitious, and into more danger. This is great fun. All the kids (well, adults: they've just turned 18) are smart, sensible and competent, but they have problems too, with their families, with the law, and with each other. The action has all the flavour of classic Heinlein juveniles smart kids interacting with lovingly-described technology, here aeroplanes, and with the wilderness along with added depth of characterisation. A great follow-up to Jumper (even better in one respect: this time there is an explanation for the new-found ability).

Jumper
Reviewed November 1997 Steven Gould doesn't quite write hard science fiction - not in his first two novels, anyway - but he does take a very logical, methodical approach to his SF. Jumper is about David Rice, an 18-year-old man who grew up with an abusive father. Shortly before his 18th birthday, David learns that he can teleport, moving instantly to any place that he can clearly remember having been to or seen in person. The entire book explores what David can do - and does - with this ability over the course of a year and a half. Davy first uses this ability to escape from his father, moving from Ohio to New York City. Gould does a good job of portraying a young and relatively naive person in such a situation, ad Davy doesn't have a license or birth certificate, or any means of getting money. So what does he do to fix this? He robs a bank and gets a fake driver's license. He quickly learns that he can teleport to places he can see clearly, which allows him to jump through windows, and move quickly across stretches of land. Binoculars come in handy. He also learns that having been somewhere, distance means little to him, and he maintains residences in three different states, moving seamlessly among them. As befits the age of its protagonist

Post your questions for Stephen Jay Gould on our forums.... Stephen Jay Gould is the most popular modern guardian not just of Charles Darwin's evolutionary science, but of the quasi-religious enthusiasm that closes the "Origin of Speech," where Darwin wrote "there is grandeur in this view of life." Through 27 years now Steve Gould has written an unbroken series of essays in the magazine Natural History , all under the heading: "This view of life." Excitement, awe, a certain sentimentality some would say, are the mark of his scientific writing-about the beauty of fossils, about Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak or the majestic, improbable continuity of 3-and-a-half billion years of life on earth. He writes with a connected passion about his Hungarian immigrant grandparents, Grammy and Papa Joe, who landed 100 years ago in New York. Encompassing continuity and change, evolution is the "roots" story write large. Steve Gould's view of life is this hour on The Connection. Guests: Stephen Jay Gould, the influential evolutionary biologist and professor at Harvard University.

Science and Religion:
Conflict or Conciliation Commentary by Norman Hall on the Skeptical Inquirer Special Issue
on Science and Religion, July-August, 1999 Steven Jay Gould, a CSICOP Fellow, Alexander Agassiz professor of zoology and professor of geology at Harvard University ( "Non-Overlapping Magisteria," pp. 55-61), writes about his experiences explaining to Jesuit scientists and to one of his own students, how it is that there is really no conflict between evolution and religion. He then provides an enlightening analysis of statements about evolution made by Pope Pius XII (in 1950) and by Pope John-Paul II ( in 1996). But Gould firmly believes that science and religion should never conflict, because each occupies a separate "magisterium," or area of teaching authority, which does not overlap with that of the other. These "respective domains of professional expertise" are, for science, "the empirical constitution of the universe," and for religion, "the search for proper ethical values and the spiritual meaning of our lives." Besides being a serious misrepresentation of the nature of theory and its role in science, this passage reveals that Gould is apparently unaware of the existence of a wide range of scientific research bearing upon the meaning of beauty in art, in music, and even in human sexual relations. But this attempt to name yet a third "magisterium" is really the only justification he tries to give for dividing human inquiry into different areas of "teaching authority" and "professional expertise." As with all of the supporters of the idea that religion is the proper authority in the realm of ethics, the only justification seems to be that, due to millenia of historic precedent, it is supposed to be obvious and trivially true.

Arthur Jensen Replies to Steven Jay Gould
The following is a review of Gould's Mismeasure of Man , in which Dr. Arthur Jensen replies to Gould's severe criticism of him in the book. Of course, uncritical admirers of Gould will "know" that Jensen is an alleged "racist," and hence anything he says can ever-so-conveniently be automatically be ignored. But those who are open-minded enough to give both sides a fair hearing should read Jensen's reply without any preconceived ideas, and ask themselves: Is this man really the terrible bigot and fool that Gould makes him out to be? Or is he a serious scholar who has been the victim of a slick campaign to paint him as a scoundrel because his findings contradict certain political ideologies? Jensen's reply has, until now, only been seen by a miniscule fraction of those who have read Gould's Mismeasure . It is now time for the "other side" to be heard.

and Writing I've been publishing fiction since 1980 when my first short story, "The Touch of Their Eyes," came out in Analog . Since that time, I've published more short fiction in Analog, Amazing, Asimov's and various anthologies. I've been nominated for various awards and won one (see Wildside A Bibliography. One of my later short stories, "The Session", appears in Terri Windling's anthology, The Armless Maiden and Other Tales for Childhood's Survivors , (Tor Books, April 1995, ISBN 0-312-85234-7). This anthology deals with child abuse and fairy tales and how the two relate. Of particular worth are Windling's opening and closing essays on the subject. Highly recommended. Amazon.Com says:
Steven Gould's Blind Waves is one of those books that makes you hold your breath a lot. This SF thriller takes place along what's left of the Texas Gulf coast after melting Antarctic ice has drowned much of the world. In New Galveston, a floating city, our plucky heroine Patricia Beeman uses her submarine to do salvage and inspection work. But when she stumbles upon a sunken ship full of freshly dead immigrants, she gets tangled in a dangerous web of politics, hatred, and corruption. Enter Commander Thomas Becket of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (now an armed force bigger than the Navy). Patricia and Thomas band together to beat the bad guys, and the adventure that follows delivers on all counts. Plenty of tense underwater action and zingy plot twists will keep thriller fans turning pages, while snappy dialogue, a delightfully budding romance, and homages to Shakespeare and Dorothy L. Sayers add literary flair.

Photo from: University of Michigan Windows to the Universe Perhaps more than any other contemporary American scientist Stephen Jay Gould has presented the modes, implications, benefits, and shortcomings of science to a literate public. As an inventive and productive scholar he has shaped and participated in crucial debates of the biological and geological sciences, particularly with regard to the theory of evolution, the interpretation of fossil evidence, and the meaning of diversity and change in biology. As the readership for his nearly twenty books and hundreds of essays, reviews, and articles has grown he has become one of the most popular and well-known writers and lecturers on scientific topics. He has distinguished himself by elaborating his critique of contemporary evolutionary theory via an eclectic range of discourse, deriving inspiration from his personal reflections across an astonishing array of historical and humanistic disciplines, popular culture, and sports. Gould's empirical field studies have concentrated on fossil mollusks and snails found in Bermuda. His first major monographic work, Ontogeny and Phylogeny (1977), treated the theory of recapitulation in evolutionary biology. His second
