I know where there is love deep as a river
and I know how to swim in it, thank God,
and also the bitterness of the seas it can decant into,
but the thready fibrillations of its sources are mysteries
to me, and though I know how to love a soul alive
I'm damned if I know how to make a soul rejoice. I give up on it. I don't know anything. (What I Know (Making Free with Villon's Smalltalk

as I was walking down the street
as I was walking down the street who should I meet but my two feet I said how do you do what 's new with you? they said who do you think you 're talkin to we haven't got immortal souls we need a retread I said ha. incomparable wit and kept on walking the dogs
as I was hanging round the sky what should turn up but my wall eye and I said how does it look from that far corner of my eyeball through that cockeyed camera? it said this trembling image you discard this shadow of your other self all you despise for its half-sight is all you 'll see one day I looked it straight in the white and I said, better than glass
while I was wandering in the grass among the cities of the dead what should I meet but my own head bone sockets, nasal cavity lower maxillary complete I asked the usual what 's your advice, hm? in a bored voice it said the usual: live today I says, that 's all you have to say? I ask for bread, you give me stones it snarled, I 'm tired of chattering

    All the Blue Apes
    an interview with Phyllis Gotlieb
by David Mathew Author of the recent novel Violent Stars , a slippery, sexy, intricate piece about a long-running court case, prostitution and murder, set in a farflung existence, Phyllis Gotlieb is a poet of renown, and a resident of Toronto, Canada. Her work is beautifully written, and the short story collection Blue Apes is especially recommended as an introduction. David Mathew: Please tell me something about your early life and how you became a writer. Phyllis Gotlieb: I was born in 1926 and from around age ten or eleven I wrote poems and stories and decided to be a writer. I guess I didn't quite know at that time that there was any difference between "genre" and "literature". My family worked in the movie managing business. The movie house my father managed had a candy store next door (shades of Isaac Asimov) and its proprietor gave us the pulps and movie mags he couldn't sell; I was attracted to these because they had colour and action, and these qualities appeared in whatever I wrote up until I went to University, where I learned more about what literature really was, and developed the more literary style I had just been beginning to use. By the time I graduated I found myself in a protracted dry spell; I married soon after and my husband, a physicist originally and later a professor of computer science, suggested my trying science fiction. I'm a slow learner, and it took me some years to write a saleable story. H.L. Gold kept saying my work wasn't original enough, and John. W. Campbell sneered because my story didn't have a thrillingly happy ending ("denies the whole premise of science fiction!").

    Phyllis Gotlieb:A Judgement of Dragons
[Spoilers herein] Phyllis Gotlieb was, at one point, pretty much the only SF author that people could identify as Canadian. This has changed, but she still holds a place in the field. A Judgement of Dragons is not really a novel so much as a linked series of novelettes. They link quite stronglythe characters from earlier stories appear in later onesbut the action is fairly episodic. The stories are interesting. In the first, they run afoul of a time vortex set up by an alien Qumedni, and have to thwart it in a 19th-century Polish village. In the second, while Prandra is getting her ESP-ability tested at GalFed HQ, they are framed for murder. In the third, they attempt to break drug-runners' hold on a planet whose inhabitants can't deal with them. In the fourth, they confront the Qumedni responsible for creating their race(from Earth leopards), and the Qumedni intent on stealing the secret of bestowing sentience. The stories take a bit to get into, since a lot of time is spent from the Ungrunkhs' point of view, which is quite well-done, but which doesn't always focus on the things that would interest the reader. I would recommend them, though. On a scale of 1-10, I'd give it a 7. %A Gotlieb, Phyllis

    Interview with Phyllis Gotlieb
Here is our complete interview with Phyllis Gotlieb. It also appears in Challenging Destiny Number 8. CD: How did you get started writing, and why do you write SF? PG: I started writing when I was about 10 or 11. I remember the exact impulse was when I was watching a movie called Charlie Chan at the Opera . My family ran movie houses, and I of course was an attender on Saturday afternoonso much and so intensely it was almost religious. I was watching this movie and the opera singer said, "I had just finished my aria when I heard this terrible scream." And I thought, "Aria. What a beautiful word, I've got to use it." So I wrote a little story just to use that word. CD: When you were starting out it was mostly men who were writing SF. PG: Yes, there were a few women but not many. And some of them used male names. When I first got published it was due to Cele Goldsmith, the editor of Amazing Stories she bought my first story. Goldsmith was publishing stories by Gene Wolfe and Ursula Le Guin then. I'd been sending to

    Among You
a short story by Phyllis Gotlieb R ain wakes in semiform as always, rising out of oceanic twilight and sharpening his senses. Above him is the skylight, color of dark water. He stretches his arm, opens his fingers for the keypad, touch, the dome depolarizes and the room fills with blue morning light, like a well. It is rare now that he lets himself relax into trueform. He has never lived on his own world, and has never known more than three or four of its people, his siblings. He recalls flashes of green in the skies he dreams of, and jagged white, yellow or grey growths that surge upward at sunrise and fall blackened toward night, and he dreams of himself in his true form among them. But there is no way to live in that shape on this world. Rain gets off the bed and straightens the covers that are barely rippled, then goes to the bath unit where he washes his skin gently with froth and sprays it with a fresh coat of dermfix. So he can bear to put on the shirt and pants and those ugly shoes. He stands with eyes closed and slowly reshapes the cartilage of his night face, his lax body, into his daily image, but he does not look at himself in the mirror until he has put on the wig and eyelashes. They are both fine-textured and an inconspicuous dark blond. He studies himself there for a moment, decides that his nose is too pointed and broadens it a bit, then colors his lips a very pale pink. He appears much the same as he has done the day before, and the years before that. He snaps a holo of his head and graphs it against the standard in the 3-D plotter. It matches well enough, and is different enough to keep him from freezing into that one shape, let him keep earning his living.

Phyllis Gotlieb is considered by many to be the "mother of Canadian science fiction." In 1982 she received an Aurora Award for best novel for A Judgement of Dragons Violent Stars (Tor 1999) is her latest novel. Her first novel, Sunburst (1964, reprinted 1978; 2nd ed., 2001), provided the name for Canada's Sunburst Award . She was interviewed on February 9, 2002 at the Ad Astra convention in Toronto. Photo by Mici Gold.]
Your writing career has spanned more than four decades, but you've come out with a couple of popular books in recent years. How do you keep things fresh over such an extensive career?
I don't write as much as I would like to. So I guess if I wrote more, things might get staler, just the way Stephen King feels in his claims to give up writing. I don't believe it for a minute, but I can see what he feels. Your professional writing has included poetry and fiction, with a very wide range of influences. How has this background influenced you? I began writing poetry when I was very young. I had various writer's blocks, and it was during one of these that my husband said, "Why don't you try science fiction?" It took me a long while to learn how to write it. But not only did it break my writer's block and make me more of a prose writer, but it brought back my poetry too.
