Nadine Gordimer: Selected Stories
Using this Guide List of other study guides Nadine Gordimer (born 1923) has made her career under difficult circumstances. Born an English-speaking Jew in South Africa, she resented and resisted the pressure to conform to the white supremacist attitudes embodied in the system of apartheid. She has been politically active most of her life, and has often written about the relationships among white radicals, liberals, and blacks in South Africa. Her most widely-read works are novels like The Conservationist (1974) and Burger's Daughter (1979); but many people believe her finest writing to be contained in her short stories. In 1991 she was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Although she is one of the most distinguished of modern women writers, she has resisted being classed as a feminist. See what you think of her portraits of men and women in the following stories.
The Bridegroom "Caravan"=trailer. "Ou Piet, ek wag." "Hey, old Piet; I'm waiting," in Afrikaans, the language of the Dutch-descended whites. Note the tone with which the protagonist addresses Piet, whom we are told later is "a good cook."

Nadine Gordimer

"Berlin - Johannesburg"
Opening Speech by Nadine Gordimer
20 May 1998 at the Goethe-Institut Johannesburg
Dear friends of the Goethe-Institute! The Goethe-Institute´s original invitation to me for tonight´s opening of the events celebrating the city Berlin was for the premiere of a documentary film exploring Berlin and Johannesburg, two cities where, within the same few months, walls came down: the Berlin wall, and the walls of Apartheid.
Unfortunately - such is the way with film projects - the documentary is in the final stages of production but is not completed. So - with apologies - I shall do my second-best and try to present something of it in words in place of images.
How did it come about that two South Africans, myself and Hugo Cassirer, decided to make a film about Berlin - indeed, had the presumption to want to make one? What was Berlin to us?
Well, as I am very much the senior partner in the enterprise, let´s start with me. And go a long way back, 45 years in fact. Until then, Berlin was present in my mind as newsprint photographs (no television in South Africa then), the mis en scene of a few movies, and the setting of some novels. Then, that year I met a born Berliner, a Jew who had been stripped of his German citizenship by the nazis and had fled to South Africa as an immigrant who soon became a South African citizen and had served in the South African and the British armies during the war. We married. He had a whole life, the formative years up to his mid-twenties, about which I knew nothing. I had never been to Europe, let alone Berlin.

Loot A short story by Nadine Gordimer
To appear in a forthcoming volume of her short stories O nce upon our time, there was an earthquake: but this one is the most powerful ever recorded since the invention of the Richter scale made possible for us to measure apocalyptic warnings.
That is what is known; in television coverage that really had nothing to show but the pewter skin of the depths, in radio interviews with those few infirm, timid or prudent who had not come down from the hills, and in newspaper accounts of bodies that for some reason the sea rejected, washed up down the coast somewhere.
But the writer knows something no-one else knows; the sea-change of the imagination.
Now listen, there's a man who has wanted a certain object (what) all his life. He has a lot of - things - some of which his eye falls upon often, so he must be fond of, some of which he doesn't notice, deliberately, that he probably shouldn't have acquired but cannot cast off, there's an art noveau lamp he reads by, and above his bed-head a Japanese print, a Hokusai, 'The Great Wave', he doesn't really collect oriental stuff, although if it had been on the wall facing him it might have been more than part of the furnishings, it's been out of sight behind his head for years. All these - things - but not the one.
He's a retired man, long divorced, chosen an old but well-appointed villa in the maritime hills as the site from which to turn his back on the assault of the city. A woman from the village cooks and cleans and doesn't bother him with any other communication. It is a life blessedly freed of excitement, he's had enough of that kind of disturbance, pleasurable or not, but the sight from his lookout of what could never have happened, never ever have been vouchsafed, is a kind of command. He is one of those who are racing out over the glistening sea-bed, the past - detritus-treasure, one and the same - stripped bare.
