kathleen ann goonan The following is an email interview with Kathleen Ann Goonan conducted between February 16-21 2004 by Kate Sisson. Ms. Goonan generously consented to its publication on the Frankenstein Project website. She will be the keynote speaker for the Project's opening night. Please see the events page for more information.
1. Where did your interest in SF start? How did you begin writing it? Is this connected to a similar interest in science? It was a foolish decision, but I suppose it has worked out in the long run.
I had no interest at all in science until I began teaching. I was utterly and completely involved in the world of literature, although I did read all of the big SF books of the early seventies, such as The Dispossessed The Snow Queen Stranger in a Strange Land , etc. Maria Montessori was a physician, and based her theories of child development on scientific observation. She was the first person, for instance, to posit that children go through what she called "sensitive periods" when it is easy for them to absorb various skillsmotor, speech, mathematical, social, etc, at the appropriate developmental stage. This was shortly after the turn of the century, and I do not believe that her pioneering science in this field has been adequately recognized. I am also married to a scientista physician with a degree in chemistry.

Kate Sisson, Science, Technology, and Culture junior
Frankenstein has haunted the minds and creations of writers since Mary Shelley's story hit the press in 1818. For nearly 200 years authors have rewritten this story to imagine both beautiful and horrific creations. One of the most beautiful and noteworthy children of Shelley's legacy is Kathleen Ann Goonan's 1994 novel Queen City Jazz In the first novel of her nanotech series, Goonan offers a retelling of Frankenstein set in a world of biotechnology and bumblebees. If she had used Shelley's characters, Goonan's modern science fiction reworking of Frankenstein would go like this: In Queen City Jazz , Goonan drastically rewrites the Frankenstein story by placing it in a future world controlled by nano- and biotechnology. This enables her to both invoke and extend Shelley's ideas concerning scientific creation, human identity, and feminist critiques of science.

Queen City Jazz Mississippi Blues - Goonan examines the consequences of a "nano technology" that threatens to destroy humanity. The Bones of Time - An exploration into the nature of time, consciousness, and history. Goonan also offers an intriguing glimpse of the people of Hawaii - a glimpse that is probably a surprise to most Haolies who know the islands only through the cheerful pictures peddled by the tourist trade.

Reviews
WAS
by Geoff Ryman "A country is like a child," says Geoff Ryman, and his latest novel, Was , expands that intriguing and arguable idea (as well as its obverse) into a complex and rewarding experience. Was is a searching look at the roots of our desire for what lies over the rainbow, as individuals and as a country. In Ryman's book, Oz, that dreamplace of archetypal significance and power, has permutated into the paradoxical Was, whose meaning is gradually revealed. Was is a book about childhood. Not about childhood as we prefer to see it, but as it really is: a time of powerlessness combined with a sometimes painful openness which imprints us forever with an emotional country. The Wizard of Oz is a perfect metaphor for what Ryman is trying to show us: there is a place and a time of color and beauty and hope and love, and too often it is wrung out of us by others, sometimesno, usually , with the best of intentions.

C rescent City is in crisis. The time approaches when it wishes to leave the Earth and launch itself into space. The city is alive and supports its human population by providing all of its needs. However this paradise is brutally invaded by pirates. Lacking the ability to help itself, the city enlists Jason Peabody, the last radio engineer. Peabody has been listening for years it seems, but mostly there is radio silence. While he is linked to the Consilience, a disruption to the system causes his personality to be overlaid by that of Radio Cowboy who is keener to get to a rodeo than help the city. Peabody/Radio Cowboy’s quest is for the city’s guidance system left in Johnson Space Centre in Houston many years previously. His travelling companion is Dania a woman healed and remade by the city.

Kathleen Ann Goonan
Kathleen Ann Goonan is having a good year: The Bones of Time has just come out in paperback from Tor Books, and her story " The String " has been nominated for the Nebula Award. The honor is no surprise to those who know her work: William Gibson called her first novel, Queen City Jazz, "An unforgettable vision of America transfigured by a new and utterly apocalyptic technology." In addition to her SF/fantasy, Katherine is also known for her travel writing. Head Space hosts Angus MacDonald and Martha Soukup and assorted friends grilled Goonan about fiction, music, and her upcoming book, Mississippi Blues
Angus MacDonald: Hello? eltuercas: hi, angus, I think we are OK Angus MacDonald: Come one, come all! Head Space! eltuercas: I talked with both Kathleen and Martha. They should arrive any second. Angus MacDonald: So it wasn't just me? eltuercas: No, it was our SyBase server. It freaked out. Angus MacDonald: "mansy" - name looks familiar...
