And Now for Something Completely in the Know
Monty Python 's John Cleese talks to William Goldmanand they know. Written By Andrea Grossman
(From the May 2000 issue of "Written By") "Nobody knows anything."
William Goldman in Adventures in the Screen Trade M any of William Goldman's books and movies have become cultural marking posts in and of themselves. He's won two Academy Awards, two Lifetime Achievement Awards for only one life, and two Screenwriter of the Year Awards. From Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Stepford Wives, and All the President's Men to such films as Misery and The General's Daughter, we find ourselves in some modern horror of existentialism: a blend of pop culture, paranoia, edge-of-your-seat suspense, and great black humor. That Bill Goldman's new nonfiction book on the business, Which Lie Did I Tell?, has received huge press coverage is no accident. It's not just a book for screenwriters. Besides the hilarious and sometimes acerbic tips for screenwriters and filmmakers about the absurd wastes of time and energy often involved in the process, this book makes significant observations about the state of our culture and those who shape it. According to Steve Martin, John Cleese is the funniest guy in the world. We've known John Cleese for the past 30 or so years, ever since he and a few of his friends got together writing for the David Frost Show. Before Cleese and his buddies came along, there was never anything like his irreverent, subversive satire, which was revolutionary in so many ways. The Monty Python movies, reeking of British, literary, and sacred history, stay with us in our collective comic memory. There's a distinct thread of scholarship that informs Cleese's work. You do, after all, have to know something in order to warp it.
