The future writer's greatest attachment in his early childhood was to his younger brother Ivan, who died when Nikolai was ten. His closeness to Ivan haunted Gogol's memory as a lost paradise, which he strove to regain with his lifelong search for an equally ideal male friend and companion. Between the ages of twelve and nineteen, Gogol stayed at an all-male boarding school in the town of Nezhin. There, he began to write prose and poetry for the school's literary journal, had great success in school theatricals, especially in the parts of comical old women, and formed a sentimental attachment to his older fellow student, Gerasim Vysotsky. Vysotsky graduated two years before Gogol and departed for St. Petersburg. During the two years Gogol had to wait for his own graduation, he yearned to join his friend and wrote him a series of amorous letters. But their reunion in 1828, when Gogol, too, moved to St. Petersburg came to naughtthe first instance of Gogol's later infatuations with heterosexual men unable to respond.

LESSON 6 The Rise of Prose: Nikolai Gogol
Study Notes
The Rise of Prose
The great achievement of this age of prose, from the 1840s to the 1890s, was Russian Realism (discussed in the sequel to this course, Russ 3422Russian Literature: Tolstoy to the Present). Our concern here is to have a look at the beginnings of Russian prose. We have seen that after 1830 Pushkin turned more and more to prose, a significant fact given that Pushkin was the greatest poet of the time. The writer who did most to establish prose as a force in Russian literary culture, however, was Gogol. Gogol's example, combined with the authoritative literary pronouncements of the greatest literary critic of the period, V. G. Belinsky, established prose as the literary medium of the future. The great novelist Dostoevsky is supposed to have said, referring to himself and his fellow Realists, "We have all come out from under Gogol's 'Overcoat'" (referring to the famous story by Gogol).
Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852)
Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol was born in the Mirgorod district of the Ukraine in 1809. His early life was spent on his father's country estate. Gogol's father was also a writer; his works, many of which were written for the Ukrainian puppet theater, are in Ukrainian, and he is classed as a Ukrainian writer. His son, however, decided to write in Russian. Nikolai Gogol moved to St. Petersburg in 1828 with the intention of becoming a full-time professional writer. His first published work, a long narrative in verse, was received with indifference by the critics, and the sensitive Gogol fled from Russia in shame. When he returned from Europe in 1829, Gogol first tried to find work as an actor, but was eventually forced to take a minor post in the civil service to support himself. His experiences in the government bureaucracy are reflected in some of his later stories, especially "The Nose" and "The Overcoat."

Great Russian writer, whose plays, stories, and novels are among the great masterpieces of 19th-century Russian realist literature. Ranked with such Russian literary giants as the novelists Leo Tolstoy, Ivan Turgenev, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky and the poet Aleksandr Pushkin . Recognized for his great ability for accurate and sympathetic character portrayal as well as his rollicking satire and extraordinary humor. His works contain a large number of brilliantly depicted Russian provincial types. Many of Gogol's witty sayings have become Russian maxims. Born March 20, 1809, in Sorochintsy, Mirgorod, Poltava Province (now Ukraine), of cossack parents. In 1828 went to St. Petersburg, where eventually secured employment in the civil service and became known in literary circles. From 1826 to 1848 lived mostly in Rome. In 1843 made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, and on his return a priest persuaded him that his fictional work was sinful. Gogol thereupon destroyed a number of his unpublished manuscripts. Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852) Brief Biography
Short Biography
Nikolai Gogol is one of the most famous of all Russian authors. Born in 1809 in the Ukraine, Gogol would become known as the Father of Russian Realism. His real surname was actually Ianovsky, however his grandfather had changed it order to claim noble Cossack ancestry. From 1819-1821, Gogol attended the Poltava boarding school and from there went on to high school at Nyezhin (a little town outside Kiev) until 1828. He didn't exactly excel in his studies there, but he did develop a love of theater, which would have a major impact on his future career. After graduating, he moved to St. Petersburg where he published his first piece of writing: an epic poem called Hans Kuchelgarten. It was a disaster. The public hated it, and, in a strong reaction to the harsh criticism, Gogol burned all remaining unsold copies. During this time, Gogol went through many careers: he was a professor, a low-level government official (a type of person he would write many of his works about), an actorhe even sailed for America in hopes of finding fortune there, that is until he got seasick and homesick before even leaving the Baltic Sea and returned home. Then, in 1831, came the turning point of Gogol's life. He met the great poet Alexander Pushkin. The two became great friends until Pushkin's death. The poet had a major impact upon Gogol's work and gave him many of his ideas. That year, he published his 'Dikinka Tales', which were sketches about Ukrainian life. These were well accepted by the public and Gogol decided to become a full-time writer.

    Nikolai Gogol

    Gogol, Nikolai
Russian writer, whose plays, short stories, and novels rank among the great masterpieces of 19th-century Russian realist literature.
Gogol was born March 20, 1809, in Sorochintsy, Mirgorod, Poltava Province, of cossack parents. In 1828 he went to Saint Petersburg, where he eventually secured employment in the civil service and became known in literary circles. Enthusiastic praise greeted his volume of short stories of Ukrainian life, Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka (1831). Then followed another collection, Mirgorod (1835), containing "Taras Bulba," which was expanded in 1842 into a full-length novel; this work, dealing with 16th-century cossack life, revealed the writer's great ability for accurate and sympathetic character portrayal and his sparkling humor.
In 1836 Gogol's play The Inspector General appeared. A rollicking satire on the cupidity and stupidity of bureaucratic officials, it is a comedy of errors regarded by many critics as one of the most significant plays in Russian literature. It concerns the local officials of a small town who mistake a young traveler for an expected government inspector and offer him propitiatory bribes to induce him to overlook their misconduct in office.
Chichikov's travels provide the occasion for profound reflections on the degrading and stultifying influence of serfdom on both owner and serf. The work also contains a large number of brilliantly depicted Russian provincial types. Dead Souls exerted an enormous influence on succeeding generations of Russian writers. Many of the witty sayings expressed in its pages have become Russian maxims.

GOGOL, NIKOLAI VASILIEVICH In 1836 Gogol for the first time went abroad. Subsequently he spent a considerable amount of time out of Russia, chiefly in Italy, where much of his Dead Souls was written. His residence there, especiailv at Rome, made a deep impression on his mind, which, during his later years, turned towards mysticism. The last works which he published, his Confession and Correspondence wit/i Friends, offer a painful contrast to the light, bright, vigorous, realistic, humorous writings which had gained and have retained for him his immense popularity in his native land. Asceticism and mystical exaltation had told upon his nervous system, and its feeble condition showed itself in his literary compositions. In 1848 he made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, and on his return settled down ~t Moscow, where he died on the 3rd of March 1852.
