XXVII - Nro. Miércoles 7 de abril de 2004 Gabriela para la poesía Hace 115 años nació en Vicuña (Cuarta Región), Lucila de María Godoy Alcayaga. Fue bautizada el mismo día de su nacimiento: el 7 de abril de 1889. Su padre, Jerónimo Godoy Villanueva, era profesor, había estudiado en el Seminario Diocesano de La Serena. Recibió una sólida formación con miras al sacerdocio: latín, griego, oratoria, filosofía, literatura, teología. Era un educador nato, poseedor de una vasta cultura. Lucila heredó de su padre lo andariega y la poesía. Para su madre hizo el siguiente poema: "Madre en el fondo de tu vientre se hicieron en silencio mis ojos, mi boca, mis manos. Con tu sangre más rica me regabas como el agua las papillas del jacinto, escondidas bajo tierra. Mis sentidos tuyos y con éste como préstamo de tu carne ando por el mundo. Alabada seas por todos, el esplendor de la tierra que entra y se enreda en mi corazón". Petronila Alcayaga Rojas era costurera y campesina. Tenía una hija de 15 años, Emelina Molina Alcayaga, que ejerció como profesora y le enseñó a Lucila todo lo que ella sabía. Lucila tenía tres años cuando su padre abandonó su hogar para siempre. A los nueve años fue acusada de robar cuadernos, lo que nunca hizo. Era una niña tímida, que tenía complejo de fealdad; era tartamuda y decía su nombre como "titila llolloy". Se iba a los cerros de Montegrande para hablarle a las flores y a los animales, también para hablar en soledad.

A member of the cultural committee of the League of Nations and Chilean consul to Madrid, Lisbon, Nice, and Naples, Mistral combined her educational ministry with her poetic talent to influence those she visited. In 1922 she was able to further her influence in Mexico, where upon the invitation of Jose Vasconcelos, she helped enhance the Mexican government’s attempts at educational reform. Education and reform were constant focuses of Mistral throughout her life, and it is quite possible that through her travels and exposure as an educator, her poetry became well known and valued by those with whom she came in contact. Having lived through two world wars, Gabriela Mistral’s poetry occasionally slipped through the cracks of the cultural realm while the rest of the world paid more attention to political issues and literary works. Gabriela Mistral Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, hija de Juan Jerónimo Godoy y Petronila Alcayaga, nació en Vicuña, Chile, el 7 de Abril de 1889. En sus años de adolescencia colaboró con el periodico "Coquimbo",de la ciudad de La Serena, utilizando los seudónimos de "Alguien","Soledad" y "Alma". También empezó a trabajar ejerciendo una ayudantía en la Escuela de La Compañia, aldea vecina a Vicuña. Al mismo tiempo sirvió como maestra en la escuela de La Cantera. Escribió para los periodicos "La Voz de Elqui" y "La Reforma". En 1906 se enamoró de un empleado de ferrocarriles, Romelio Ureta, quien se suicidó el 25 de noviembre de 1909, causándole una enorme impresión, que se puede apreciar en sus primeros versos importantes. En 1908 figuró en la antología "Literatura Coquimbana" de L. Carlos Soto Ayala, en la cual éste le dedica un breve estudio y selecciona tres prosas poéticas de la autora: "Ensoñación", "Junto al mar" y "Carta íntima". Para 1909 ella era inspectora en el Liceo de Señoritas de La Serena y rindió examen en la Escuela Normal de Santiago para sancionar los estudios y conocimientos adquiridos en la práctica escolar. Al año siguiente obtuvo el título de maestra en Santiago. Fue profesora Primaria en Barrancas. Luego la trasladaron al sur de Chile y la nombraron Profesora de Higiene en el Liceo de Traiguén. En 1912 volvió a ser trasladada, ésta vez a Antofagasta como Profesora de Historia e Inspectora General. Después se trasladó al Liceo de Los andes y la nombraron Inspectora y Profesora de Castellano.
