Carlos Soto Araya publica en 1908 "Literatura Coquimbana", antología en la cual el autor le dedica a Mistral un breve estudio, seleccionando tres prosas poéticas de ella: "Ensoñación", "Junto al mar" y "Carta íntima". En 1912 decidió presentar "Sonetos de la Muerte", en los Juegos Florales de Santiago, inspirados en la tragedia sentimental de su frustrado amor por Romelio Ureta, empleado de ferrocarriles, quien se suicidó tres años antes. Los tres sonetos en concurso llevaban por primera el nombre que la hizo conocida en el mundo entero, "Gabriela Mistral". Gabriela Mistral ya era conocida en el ámbito literario, sus poesías no dejaban a nadie indiferente, sin embargo, aún no publicaba ningún libro independiente.
