About Louise Glück A fter attending Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, New York, and Columbia University, New York City, Gluck taught poetry at numerous colleges and universities. Her first collection of poetry, Firstborn (1968), uses a variety of first-person personae, all disaffected or angry. The collection's tone disturbed many critics, but Gluck's exquisitely controlled language and imaginative use of rhyme and metre delighted others. Although its outlook is equally grim, her collection The House on Marshland (1975) shows a greater mastery of voice. There, as in her later volumes, Gluck's personae include historic and mythic figures such as Gretel and Joan of Arc. Her adoption of different perspectives became increasingly imaginative; for example, in "The Sick Child," from the collection Descending Figure (1980), her voice is that of a mother in a museum painting looking out at the bright gallery. The poems in The Triumph of Achilles (1985), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for poetry, address archetypal subjects of classic myth, fairy tales, and the Bible. These concerns are also evident in Ararat (1990), which has been acclaimed for searing honesty in its examination of the family and the self. Later works by Gluck include

The entire enterprise of poetry and the famously touted examined life come under the poet’s unblinking scrutiny in this extraordinarily forthright collection. In Gluck’s last book, Vita Nova (1999), poems glinting with classical allusions gave way to more personal works. Here Gluck stands exposed, as though she has renounced artifice in pursuit of understanding. “That was what I wanted: to be naked,” she writes, and she is radiant in her frank self-questioning and glorious in her jousting tournament with time. At 50, Gluck muses on her childhood, which she believed was merely a way station and so was unprepared for just how very long the “wish to be elsewhere” persists. The earth itself disappoints, in spite of its bountiful beauty: “it will feed you, it will ravish you, / it will not keep you alive.” All things sensual are untrustworthy, erased by death, though, as Gluck attests, the alternative is no safer. Having always dwelled ardently in the realm of thought, she’s forever “waiting for my mind to save me,” a state of being that readers will recognize with a jolt. Gluck’s poems are so right, so true, they’re virtually telepathic. — Donna Seaman (Booklist/March 15, 2001)

Louise Glück August 28, 2003 - Quite obviously, the news right now is that Louise Glück has been named the next U.S. poet laureate. Poetry is the genre of writing that comes most close to confession. Nothing bares the soul like a well-crafted poem poured forth from the depths of the heart. Louise Glück is a contemporary American poet with a strength of voice and an amazing clarity of emotional language. Spare and elegant, she gives herself to her audience in each of her works.
Her images are gripping sometimes stark and at other times lush and vibrant. Common to all her pieces is the ability to move the reader to feel emotion. Maybe it is a sudden gasp of revelation of connection or perhaps the moment comes later, when the poem resurfaces from deep in memory. Emotions will be evoked. Glück has moved away from her early form of traditional collections of poems written over a period of time, to a series of book-length sequences with one common theme, each working together to compose the whole.

All Hallows Even now this landscape is assembling. The hills darken. The oxen Sleep in their blue yoke, The fields having been Picked clean, the sheaves Bound evenly and piled at the roadside Among cinquefoil, as the toothed moon rises: This is the barrenness Of harvest or pestilence And the wife leaning out the window With her hand extended, as in payment, And the seeds Distinct, gold, calling Come here Come here, little one And the soul creeps out of the tree. Celestial Music I have a friend who still believes in heaven. Not a stupid person, yet with all she knows, she literally talks to God. She thinks someone listens in heaven. On earth she's unusually competent. Brave too, able to face unpleasantness. We found a caterpillar dying in the dirt, greedy ants crawling over it. I'm always moved by disaster, always eager to oppose vitality But timid also, quick to shut my eyes. Whereas my friend was able to watch, to let events play out According to nature. For my sake she intervened Brushing a few ants off the torn thing, and set it down Across the road.
