When I first saw Garrison Keillor's anthology, Good Poems , I was prepared to treat it with mild condescension. The title struck me as a little too coy, and my first glance through its topically arranged pages noticed mostly the sundry quality of its contents. "Title tells all," I thought, as the movie commentators in TV Guide used to say, when forced to describe films like Teen Cheerleader Murders or Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster . Keillor is a deft and original entertainer with a genuine literary gift, especially for a brand of satire so decorous and gentle that it blurs into nostalgic romance, but he is not a writer given to the lyric extremes of powerful emotion so often essential to poetry. I assumed that most of the poems in Good Poems would, indeed, be good poems, but probably not good enough to make the book a necessary addition to the already overcrowded field of anthologies. I must mention here, in the spirit of full disclosure, two relevant facts that may have colored my initial reaction to Good Poems So much for first impressions. Now that I've lived with

California at the Center of the Poet's Imagination
by Maggie Paul Maggie Paul:
You were raised in California, but spent a number of years as a businessman living on the east coast. What made you decide to return to California and take up writing as a full-time career? Dana Gioia: Ten years ago I quit my business job to become a full-time writer. (Until then I wrote at night and on weekends.) Since I no longer had to live near a steady job, I had the freedom to live anywhere I want. I decided to come back to California. I had always intended to come back. California has always been at the center of my imagination. It is the landscape I see in my mind's eye. It is odd to live here again after having spent twenty years in New York. It is also odd to be so near my family again after having lived among the executive and bohemian classes of the Northeast. But one needs to touch native ground. So here I am. MP: In addition to writing poetry, you are well-known as an essayist, reviewer, translator, and editor. How do these other forms of writing effect your poetry? Is it difficult to keep your hand in so many different forms, or do they feed off one another? DG: I think of myself first of all as a reader. That is the core of my identity as a writer. I have loved booksand poetry since childhood, and they have played a huge role in forming my life. Only then do I think of myself as a poet. That is the center of my creative identity. Finally, as a reader and a poet, I find the rest of my writing a sort of natural extension, a way of talking about the things that interest me, the art that I love. Poetic inspiration is an infrequent and intermittent thing. One writes prose to occupy the rest of the time. But the most fun is to read something wonderful.

Bush budget asks $18 million increase for NEA
By Ken Gewertz
Harvard News Office
For Dana Gioia, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the culture wars are a thing of the past. Appointed to the NEA's leadership post in January 2003, the poet, critic, and former business executive wants to move beyond the struggles that once raged over public funding for controversial figures like photographer Robert (Staff photo Stephanie Mitchell/Harvard News Office) Mapplethorpe and initiate a new public conversation about arts funding. "I refuse to believe that arts funding is controversial. I believe that most Americans want art in their communities and in the lives of their children, and I'm frankly bored with talking about controversies of the previous century." Gioia spoke Feb. 9 at Radcliffe's Agassiz Theatre, outlining an exciting set of initiatives, including a plan to bring high-quality Shakespeare productions to communities throughout the nation, a program to recognize and showcase America's living jazz masters, and a series of tours and exhibitions to celebrate America's cultural legacy across all the arts.

MAIN LIBRARY
Like many Americans born near the middle of the Twentieth Century, I first encountered the idea of a vampire by watching early television reruns of Bela Lugosi in Dracula Despite the success of recent actors in redepicting Dracula, the performance of Bela Lugosi has always retained my affection. Like Lon Chaney in Phantom of the Opera Nosferatu Libretto is an unfamiliar medium for English-language authors. Other than W. H. Auden, no modern poet of note has taken much interest in writing for music. Broadway does have an accomplished lyricist in Stephen Sondheim, though he is generally regarded as a composer first, versifier second. Choosing words for music, a poet must alter several of the usual criteria for composition. Expression must be simple and direct. Charged poetic language is difficult for a performer to sing or an audience to comprehend in a musical setting, where the least strain or perplexity would undermine the emotional effect so necessary in opera. Strong sentiments are also requisite, and these are unfashionable among modern poets. Nosferatu has distinctly more contemporary story-line than that of Dracula Citing the opening of Paradise Lost I am the image that darkens your glass

Message from Dana Gioia,
Chairman, National Endowment for the Arts
Welcome to the Web site of Shakespeare in American Communities . Along with honorary chairs Mrs. Laura Bush and Motion Picture Association of America President and CEO Jack Valenti, I am delighted and proud to share with you a wealth of information about this initiative and educational information about William Shakespeare himself. The National Endowment for the Arts created Shakespeare in American Communities to introduce a new generation of audiences to the greatest playwright in the English language. In order to understand American culture or American theater, one must first understand Shakespeare. This initiative brings to small and mid-sized communities live theater of the highest caliber. From Anchorage, Alaska to Pensacola, Florida, from Torrance, California to Texarkana, Texas, the Arts Endowment is helping to reinvigorate the theater touring tradition and strengthen the arts in communities across the country. My hope is that Shakespeare in American Communities will demonstrate the benefits of theater touring and lead to making professional theater a vital part of the cultural landscape of smaller communities. I believe the performances and educational activities will inspire young and old to attend future theatrical productions and will help create a new appreciation for live theater and Shakespeare.

Dana Gioia and the LA Times
Jack Foley
Dana Gioia is surely a lightning rod. Controversy seeks him out as if he were a prized lover. The main headline for the September 12, 2001 National Edition of the Los Angeles Times was, “TERRORISTS ATTACK NEW YORK, PENTAGON.” Inside, on the cover of the “Style” section, was a color photograph of Gioia at his Santa Rosa home and the headline, “Fightin’ Words: Dana Gioia has ignited debate with his claim that ‘no great poet has ever come out of California.’” In the body of the text, the “claim” is repeated: When pressed, he says California has “wonderful” poets, ranging from Thom Gunn to Carolyn Kizer, but “no great poet has ever come out of California.” That “claim” is being debated all over the Internet. Dana Gioia has once again said something controversial. The trouble is, Gioia never said it. Reading the “claim,” I phoned him to ask whether he’d said such a thingand he said he hadn’t. The article also mentioned a book I recently edited: The “Fallen Western Star” Wars (Scarlet Tanager Books, 2001). The book is a collection of responses to Gioia’s essay, “Fallen Western Star: The Decline of San Francisco as a Literary Region.” To say that San Francisco has declined as a literary region is hardly the same as to say that “no great poet has ever come out of California”but perhaps to the
