GILBERT of Sempringham
Memorial
16 February
Profile
Son of the wealthy Norman knight Jocelin. When Gilbert showed no signs of becoming a soldier , his father exiled him to Paris to study. Gilbert returned as a master of arts, and opened a school for the children of the poor in Sempringham, paying special attention to training in religion. His father provided him a living from the rents on part of his lands in Sempringham and Tirington, but Gilbert redistributed most of this to the poor . Clerk in the household of bishop Robert Bloet of Lincoln. Ordained at age 40. When his parents died in , Gilbert returned to the manor and began to spend his inheritance by founding Benedictine and Augustinian monasteries , and by providing for the poor . He drew up rules for an order of nuns later known as the Gilbertines , the only order founded on a rule designed by an Englishman , and which eventually grew to 26 houses before being suppressed in the persecutions of Henry VIII. Gilbert was the target of slander , once accused of helping the exiled Saint Thomas Becket , which accusation landed him in prison . When he was 90 years old, some of Gilbert's

Architect George Gilbert Scott Great Buildings Search Advanced Search Buildings ... Store Works Biography George Gilbert Scott (b. Gawcott, England 1811; d. London, England 1878) George Scott was born in Gawcott, England in 1811. Articled to James Edmeston from 1827 to 1831, he formed a partnership with W. B. Moffat that lasted from 1834 to 1845. Dedicated to the historic preservation of medieval buildings, Scott helped restore many churches throughout Europe. Because Scott displayed unusual thoroughness in his restorations and because he used conjecture to make many of the restorations, he often worked in opposition to many preservationists of his day. Scott designed most of his buildings in a Gothic manner that conflicted with contemporary ideas on appropriate architecture. He felt that Gothic design suited most modern building types and materials. A proponent of the Ecclesiological principles of church design, he developed the ability to blend elements from disparate architectural sources. Scott won a Royal Gold Medal in 1859 and was knighted in 1872. He died in London, England in 1878.

  • Anna Sheridan returns!
  • The first book in the B5 Techno-Mage Trilogy has been released. The trilogy's author is Jeanne avelos, who told me "John Sheridan plays a major role in books 2 and 3 (and I have some evil fun with him in a cameo in book 1 :) ). Anna Sheridan has her own storyline that runs throughout the trilogy. My previous B5 book, The Shadow Within, was about Anna and John, and serves as a sort of "prequel" to the trilogy, which continues Anna's story from where we left her at the end of the earlier book." Visit Jeanne's web site for more information about her books and upcoming appearances.

Les Gilbert
No works currently held in the Australian Music Centre Library
Born in Melbourne in 1946, Gilbert studied piano with Leslie Miers until 1964, and began studying for a degree in architecture at La Trobe University in the mid-seventies. Abandoning this, however, he has since become a successful composer, especially of sound installations. With his multi-media design and production company, Sound Design Studio, Gilbert has created sound installations for the Osaka Aquarium in Japan, the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, the National Zoo in Washington, Kakadu National Park interpretation centre, and the South Australian Maritime Museum. His installation at the Sydney Aquarium resulted in his being invited to attend the 1989 Ars Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria, where his composition, Kakadu Soundscape, was performed on the banks of the Danube. Biography compiled from information in an Australia Council publication on the Commission for the Future (1989), and in a biography (1990) of unknown provenance

As Waynflete Professor of metaphysical philosophy at Oxford and as editor of the journal Mind for nearly twenty-five years, Gilbert Ryle had an enormous influence on the development of twentieth-century analytic philosophy . In "Systematically Misleading Expressions" (1932) Ryle proposed a philosophical method of dissolving problems by correctly analyzing the derivation of inappropriate abstract inferences from ordinary uses of language . Applying this method more generally in "Categories" (1938), Ryle showed how the misapplication of an ordinary term can result in a category mistake by which philosophers may be seriously misled. Dealing with the traditional mind-body problem in The Concept of Mind (1949), Ryle sharply criticized Cartesian dualism , arguing that adequate descriptions of human behavior need never refer to anything but the operations of human bodies . This form of logical behaviorism became a standard view among ordinary-language philosophers for several decades. Ryle's Dilemmas (1954) and Collected Papers (1971) cover a wide range of topics in philosophical logic and the history of philosophy.
