The Life of W S Gilbert
A brief summary William Schwenck Gilbert was born at 17 Southampton Street, Strand, London on the 18th of November, 1836, the son of William Gilbert (a retired naval surgeon) and Anne Gilbert. He had three younger sisters: Jane, Maud and Florence. He seems to have been interested in the theatre from an early age - he later recalled the Haymarket being lit by wax candles in the mid-1840s. He completed his education at King's College, London, and forwent the possibility of going on to Oxford by taking training as an artillery officer and was tutored in military science with hopes joining the army and participating in the Crimean War. Unfortunately for him he did not graduate until after the War was over. Gilbert subsequently joined the militia and was a member for 20 years. In the period 1857-66, he made abortive attempts at careers as Government clerk and barrister: however, he retreated out of both these professions as soon as he could. In 1861 or 1862 he started contributing drawings, prose and verse to the recently-established comic journal Fun. Among the products of this association were The Bab Ballads. On the 6th of August, 1867, Gilbert married Lucy Agnes Turner. Most of the biographies provide very little information by which her personality can be deduced, apart from the bare statement that she was soothing and conciliatory where he was abrasive and confrontational. The latest biography, by Jane Stedman, suggests something more: not as tough as a bone, but certainly with a will of her own. She seems to have ruled in the domestic sphere, and there are even hints that Gilbert may have feared her anger. We still know very little about her; but this is more than we have ever been told before.

ITS BEHIND YOU DOT COM The Magic of Pantomime a flourishing industry in Victorian days, but most surprising was to find the name of W.S. gilbert amongst the authors.
http://www.btinternet.com/~nigel.ellacott/gilbert.html
W.S. Gilbert and Pantomime The writing of Christmas Pantomimes was quite a flourishing industry in Victorian days, but most surprising was to find the name of W.S. Gilbert amongst the authors. It was several years before his first comic opera that he wrote his first and only Pantomime for E T. Smith, then lessee of the Lyceum. It bore the comprehensive title of Harlequin Cock Robin and Jenny Wren; or, Fortunatus and the Waters of Life, the Three Bears, the Three Gifts, the Three Wishes and the Little Man Who Woo'd a Little Maid, and it was produced at Christmas when Gilbert was 31 years of age. He received £60 for it, and it was not a success. 'I don't think it was a good title,' remarked Gilbert later, 'but Mr. E T. Smith thought it was. Perhaps it was as good as any other. There was a procession of birds in it and every bird was, somehow or other, exactly like the lessee.' Written in four days it was a combination of nursery tales with the story of a plot by evil spirits against Cock Robin, and it was not without a certain merit. In some of the lyrics the germ of the neat facility and verbal ingenuity of the author of the Savoy opera libretti can be detected.

WILLIAM SCHWENCK GILBERT
William Schwenck Gilbert, born in London in 1836, was the son of a retired naval surgeon. Except for a kidnapping by Italian brigands in Italy at age two, and a ransomed release, he appears to have had a very normal upbringing. Beyond ordinary schooling, he took training as an artillery officer and was tutored in military science with hopes of participating in the Crimean War. Unfortunately for him, but not for us, he did not graduate until after the War was over. Gilbert subsequently joined the militia and was a member for 20 years. After finishing his military training Gilbert worked in a government bureau job which he hated. Upon receiving a nice inheritance from an aunt, Gilbert indulged his fancy and became a barrister. Called to the bar at age 28, Gilbert's law career, with no "rich attorney's elderly, ugly daughter" to help him escape mediocrity, lasted just a few years. Before leaving his law practice, however, he married the daughter of an army officer. Gilbert had shown a proclivity for caustic wit and sarcasm from an early age and it was this talent that put him on the path to greatness. Beginning in 1861, Gilbert contributed dramatic criticism and humorous verse (unsigned) to the popular British magazine

Gilbert and Sullivan / Their Lives and Times
by Leslie Baily
(London: Thames and Hudson, 1973; New York: Viking, 1974. 119 pages plus bibliography, chronology and index. 143 illustrations). Book jacket: It is properly Gilbertian that one product of the earnest and orderly Victorian age which continues vigorous and popular should be the topsy-turvy art known as Gilbert and Sullivan opera. In this lively and authoritative biography Leslie Baily sets its fascinatingly contrasted progenitors in the context of the world in which they worked and from which they drew their inspiration. W.S. Gilbert was in many ways a typical Victorian gentleman, yet his satirical absurdities often made his contemporaries uneasy; while Arthur Sullivan rose from a working-class background to become the foremost British composer of the day and the darling of smart society. With Richard D'Oyly Carte, whose business acumen allied to progressive taste catalyzed their talents, these two wrought a revolution in the theater, and Mr. Baily traces the story of their partnership from the inauspicious failure of Thespis through the dazzling succession of triumphs at home and abroad to the final series of disastrous quarrels. Text and illustrations combine to give a vivid picture of an age, and of the men who created a unique confection of mock-heroic satire, geniality, and authentic lyricism which, far from fading with the age that engendered it, still retains a special prize in the culture and affections of the English-speaking world.
